St. GilesPatron Saint of: Beggars, disabled people, breast-feeding mothers, and against cancer
Feast Day: September 1 St. Giles (7th c.) was born to a wealthy and noble Greek family. He devoted his life to the things of God and grew in sanctity, but found that his material and spiritual riches drew unwanted praise and attention. To escape prestige, he sold all of his possessions, gave his wealth to the poor, and moved away to Gaul (present day France) to live in solitude in the wilderness as a cave-dwelling hermit. He lived in this way without companionship for many years while practicing severe penances. He became so impoverished that God sent a deer to be his companion and to nourish him with its milk. One day a royal hunting party in pursuit of the deer chased it into the saint’s cave. A hunter shot an arrow into the cave, and instead of hitting the deer, he injured the saint. St. Giles was discovered and soon became known throughout the countryside as a holy hermit, the king himself often coming to visit him. St. Giles consented to receive disciples who desired to imitate his way of life. The king built a monastery for these followers, who lived as monks under the Rule of St. Benedict with St. Giles as abbot. St. Giles was known as a miracle worker during his life, and his monastery and the town that grew around it became a shrine and place of pilgrimage, especially for crippled beggars. St. Giles became one of the most popular saints in the Middle Ages, and is the patron of many causes including lepers, hermits, cripples, epileptics, cancer patients, the mentally ill, the disabled, and the poor. St. Giles’ feast day is September 1st.

The Spirit scrutinizes everything, even the depths of God.
Among men, who knows what pertains to the man
except his spirit that is within?
Similarly, no one knows what pertains to God except the Spirit of God.
We have not received the spirit of the world
but the Spirit who is from God,
so that we may understand the things freely given us by God.
And we speak about them not with words taught by human wisdom,
but with words taught by the Spirit,
describing spiritual realities in spiritual terms. Now the natural man does not accept what pertains to the Spirit of God,
for to him it is foolishness, and he cannot understand it,
because it is judged spiritually.
The one who is spiritual, however, can judge everything
but is not subject to judgment by anyone. For “who has known the mind of the Lord, so as to counsel him?”

Daily Meditation: Luke 4:31-37He taught them. (Luke 4:31) Who was your favorite teacher in school? Just about everyone has “that one teacher” whose skill and enthusiasm gave them a greater love for learning. In today’s Gospel, Luke tells us about the time when Jesus came to the synagogue in Capernaum and “taught them” (4:31). And his “teaching” included miracles of healing, exorcism, and forgiveness of sins. He was so effective, in fact, that the people “were astonished” at what he said (4:32). The story is even more poignant because it happened just after the people of his own hometown of Nazareth had rejected his words and had gone so far as to try to kill him (4:16-30). What a contrast between open and closed hearts! Jesus’ teachings weren’t meant only for the people who lived back then. As Pope St. John Paul II wrote, “The whole of Christ’s life was a continual teaching: . . . his miracles, his gestures, his prayer, his love for people, his special affection for the little and the poor” (Catechesi Tradendae, 9). Jesus continues to announce that the kingdom of God is at hand, through his living word in Scripture, through the witness of his life, and through the living example of his followers today. That means that you have a Teacher who cares about you, who loves you, who forgives you, who has redeemed you, and who guides you into the eternal life of his kingdom. Jesus longs for you to listen to his teachings with an open heart, just as the people of Capernaum did. So open your Bible and ponder his words. Listen closely to the words proclaimed in the Mass readings. Use your imagination to picture him living and acting in your midst today. By pondering his words and the way he lived, you’ll come to love him more and you’ll want to imitate him. Jesus really is better than even the best teacher you’ve ever had! “Lord, help me to open my heart to your teachings!” 1 Corinthians 2:10-16

From Roberto Juarez: "There is something very important about Jesus' authority. His authority is not about dominating. It is about liberating. Jesus does not use his power to impose himself on people. He uses it to bring them back to life. This is also true Christian authority. The authority of a father, a mother, a priest, a catechist, an educator, anyone who has responsibility for others. It is not about imposing our will. It is about helping the other to grow. Authentic authority is at the service of the person.
Today's Gospel presents Jesus to us as the Holy One of God, whose word has authority and power. But the question we must ask ourselves is not only, "Who is Jesus?" The question is, "What place does Jesus have in my life?" Because his word can be heard without being obeyed. It can be admired without being lived. It can be known without transforming our hearts.
Today let us ask the Lord that his Word may have true authority over us, that he may silence the voices that lead us away from God, that he may free us from that which enslaves us, that he may heal our wounds, that he may help us to overcome sin and that he may teach us to listen to his voice above so many other voices.
When we go out today, let us carry with us one certainty: Christ does not speak empty words. When he says "follow me", he offers us a way. When he says "do not be afraid", he offers us his presence. When he says "your sins are forgiven", he offers us new life. And when he speaks, his Word continues to have authority.

From Brother Adrian: We heard today: "Jesus rebuked him and said, “Be quiet! Come out of him!” Have you ever tried that? Rebuking unclean spirits? They are called demons here.
If you have not, then, why? Do you feel you are powerless?
Demons can become powerful, but only in as much as we allow it to be.
And that there is the problem with us today. We allow things to be.
By our silence.
By our laziness in faith.
By simply choosing to remain neutral.
By simply choosing to remain comfortable and following the false peace the world offers if you choose to be silent.
This coming Sunday, we will hear about having to confront someone who has sinned against you. And then, our Lord will ask us to approach those who have sinned….even with 2 or 3 others, and then to the church.
In a sense there, we are called to rebuke the evil among us.
But again, who does that?
Have you ever?
Did you know that a dad in a family has authority in his family to bless his family and to rebuke bad spirits?
So much more can a priest do with his flock! I promise. And the authority gets multiplied if we take the case to a Bishop.
I may stray here, but please, the Bishop does not need complaints about your priest. I think people complain all day long about priests instead of going through the right channels to rectify a problem. Approach directly, and with 2 or 3 others, and then to the church too! Pastoral councils are here, and we can work through solutions together, as a family in God our Father. But the priest is Father. Much care, much love should be in the solution.
Thus, this is the reason to reach to a sinner, or to rebuke a bad spirit. IN THE NAME OF LOVE.
I asked students last night to tell me what love is. After a few moments, I taught the truth of Scripture: GOD IS LOVE.
And although the old testament does not directly say God Is Love, our Lord comes to say things beyond the Torah. He is declaring the new Law that does not abolish, but to shine the light of what the law was meant to be….the love of God.
The Hebrew Word Hesed: The Old Testament often uses the word chesed (steadfast love, mercy, or loyal covenant love) to describe God. It appears hundreds of times.
And in comes our Lord Jesus, the Christ. And then, God sends the Holy Spirit, that we may do His will.
And with this authority, amazing things happen. If only we would apply to faith.
You should see what happens with your effort united with God's will! Amen!
