† "..Spent the night ...."

Quote of the Day

""The Holy Bible is like a mirror before our mind's eye. In it we see our inner face. From the Scriptures we can learn our spiritual deformities and beauties. And there too we discover the progress we are making and how far we are from perfection."" -Pope St Gregory the Great

Today's Meditation

"He does not come down from Heaven each day to stay in the gold ciborium. He comes down to find another Heaven He cherishes infinitely more than the first, the Heaven of our souls, made in His image, living temples of the Most Blessed Trinity!" —St. Therese of Lisieux, p. 31
An excerpt from St. Therese of Lisieux, Meditations with the Little Flower

Daily Verse

To the one who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you unblemished and exultant, in the presence of his glory, to the only God, our savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord be glory, majesty, power, and authority from ages past, now, and for ages to come. Amen. -Jude 1:24-25

Sts Simon Jude Thaddeus
St. Jude Thaddeus (1st c.) was a blood relative of Jesus Christ and one of his Twelve Apostles. He was known for his preaching, healing, exorcisms, and his appearance was said to have closely matched that of Jesus'. He is the patron of impossible causes, desperate situations, and hospitals. He also wrote the book of the Bible that bears his name. St. Simon the Zealot (1st c.) was also one of Jesus' Twelve Apostles, but one of the most obscure. He earned his name for being zealous for the honor of Jesus, showing a holy indignation towards those who claimed Christ with their lips while dishonoring him with their manner of life. After the Ascension of Jesus, towards the end of his life, it is believed that St. Simon joined St. Jude to preach the Gospel in Persia, where they were both martyred in 65 A.D. St. Simon the Zealot and St. Jude Thaddeus share a feast day on October 28th.

Feast of Saints Simon and Jude, Apostles

Lectionary: 666
Reading 1

Ephesians 2:19-22

Brothers and sisters:
You are no longer strangers and sojourners,
but you are fellow citizens with the holy ones
and members of the household of God,
built upon the foundation of the Apostles and prophets,
with Christ Jesus himself as the capstone.
Through him the whole structure is held together
and grows into a temple sacred in the Lord;
in him you also are being built together
into a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.

Responsorial Psalm

Psalm 19:2-3, 4-5

R. (5a) Their message goes out through all the earth.
The heavens declare the glory of God,
and the firmament proclaims his handiwork.
Day pours out the word to day,
and night to night imparts knowledge.

R. Their message goes out through all the earth.
Not a word nor a discourse
whose voice is not heard;
Through all the earth their voice resounds,
and to the ends of the world, their message.

R. Their message goes out through all the earth.

Alleluia See Te Deum

R. Alleluia, alleluia.
We praise you, O God,
we acclaim you as Lord;
the glorious company of Apostles praise you.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel

Luke 6:12-16

Jesus went up to the mountain to pray,
and he spent the night in prayer to God.
When day came, he called his disciples to himself,
and from them he chose Twelve, whom he also named Apostles:
Simon, whom he named Peter, and his brother Andrew,
James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew,
Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus,
Simon who was called a Zealot,
and Judas the son of James,
and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

Daily Meditation: Luke 13:10-17

Woman, you are set free of your infirmity. (Luke 13:12)

A woman racked by arthritic pain struggled to get dressed and out the door on time for her prayer group at church. The pain was nothing new—she had endured it for many years—so she was determined to go. When she got to the gathering, she was deeply moved by the Scripture passages that people shared. As she listened, she felt a burning sensation in her arms and legs. And when it subsided, she was amazed to realize her pain was completely gone!

In today's Gospel, we meet someone similar: a woman who had spent the past eighteen years unable to stand up straight. We can imagine how hard even the simplest of tasks was for her. It likely took her a long time to get ready, but she was determined to go to the synagogue. She wanted to hear God's word and the rabbi's teaching. Little did she know what that day would bring. All she did was show up, and the rabbi, a man from Nazareth named Jesus, restored her health. How surprising, then, that the synagogue leader objected that her healing had occurred on the Sabbath!

It seems absurd that anyone would want to limit God's power to certain days of the week. Yet there may be subtle ways that we put limitations on how and when God might heal us. Perhaps you look only for physical healing when the Lord wants to heal your emotions. Maybe you think that some things are too hard for even him to heal or that you can be healed only if you follow particular steps. You may even think that God doesn't heal today or that you don't deserve to be healed.

Whatever objections you might have, Jesus wants to set you free. He just asks you to keep showing up, to keep coming before him in prayer and trust. As you do, you are making yourself available to whatever he wants to do in you. He knows the healing you need. It may be a physical healing; it may be an easing of worry or calming of your emotions. It may be an increased closeness to him. Or it may be all of the above! Just remember the two women. They didn't come specifically asking for healing. They just showed up.

And so did the Lord.

"Here I am, Lord. I trust you to give me what you know I need."

From today's Holy Gospel:

"...Jesus went up to the mountain to pray,
and he spent the night in prayer to God.
When day came, he called his disciples to himself,
and from them he chose Twelve, whom he also named Apostles....."

From Bishop Barron:

"Recall the great vision from the second chapter of Isaiah: "The mountain of the Lord's house shall be established as the highest mountain. . . . All nations shall stream toward it." This is why Jesus chose twelve disciples, evocative of the twelve tribes. They would be the prototype and the catalyst for the gathering of Israel and hence the gathering of everyone. They would be the fundamental community and sign of unity." end quote.

Our Lord chose 12, but that only meant one thing...it was a representation to gather all nations, all peoples to Himself, and His Kingship is the flagship of our Almighty and Everlasting God and Father.

Last night, I told the adult class that we are actually a chosen few, that we might do God's will, for all nations..

What will we do with His call?

What is our response?

The response will be our will, our willingness to do God's will that must be fermented and fertilized with His grace.

And that there is our task, to avail ourselves to Him and His grace. That's all! What else? All this for the love of God!

He loves you.
Does this interest you?
