†Saint Quote
"Quote of the Day
"It is not lengthy prayers, but generous deeds that touch God's heart."
–St. Arnold Janssen

†Today's Meditation
"Unless someone instructs us as adults, our mental prayer is likely to be a rambling monologue about our day or a list of petitions. It's no wonder that so few of us find joy in this type of prayer or persevere in it. The Contemplative Rosary can help us here. Simply put, we should not pray the Rosary instead of spending time in metal prayer alone. Instead, The Contemplative Rosary teaches us how to meditate on the powerful images and truths revealed by the Holy Spirit in Sacred Scripture, so we can then employ a similar meditation in our time of mental prayer. Such meditation is a favorite mental prayer of the saints."
—Dan Burke and Connie Rossini, p.26

"Therefore, put on the armor of God, that you may be able to resist on the evil day and, having done everything, to hold your ground."

St. Ursula & Her 11,000 Companions

St. Ursula (4th c.) was a pious Christian princess from Britain, perhaps Wales. According to the 13th century Golden Legend she set sail and embarked on a pilgrimage to Rome with a large court of handmaids prior to settling in what is today western France, where she was to be joined in marriage to a local governor. Along her pilgrimage route she attracted many followers who were influenced by her holy example. On the return journey St. Ursula and her traveling maidens fell into the hands of the Huns, violent nomads from the East, who had invaded large swaths of Europe. St. Ursula and her company of virgins and other followers, which numbered 11,000, were tortured in an effort to have them renounce their faith. Steadfastly refusing, they were massacred in Cologne, Germany and buried together in a mass grave over which was built the Basilica of St. Ursula. Due to the varying accounts of her martyrdom and the difficulty of separating fact from legend, her feast day was suppressed in modern times. St. Ursula is the patroness of the Ursulines, a female religious order founded in 1535 by St. Angela Merici for the education of young girls. St. Ursula is also the patron of students, teachers, Catholic education, and of a holy death. Her feast day is October 21st.

Friday of the Twenty-ninth Week in Ordinary Time

Reading 1 Eph 4:1-6

Brothers and sisters:
I, a prisoner for the Lord,
urge you to live in a manner worthy of the call you have received,
with all humility and gentleness, with patience,
bearing with one another through love,
striving to preserve the unity of the spirit
through the bond of peace;

one Body and one Spirit,
as you were also called to the one hope of your call;
one Lord, one faith, one baptism;
one God and Father of all,
who is over all and through all and in all.

Responsorial Psalm 24:1-2, 3-4ab, 5-6

R. (see 6) Lord, this is the people that longs to see your face.
The LORD's are the earth and its fullness;
the world and those who dwell in it.
For he founded it upon the seas
and established it upon the rivers.
R. Lord, this is the people that longs to see your face.
Who can ascend the mountain of the LORD?
or who may stand in his holy place?
He whose hands are sinless, whose heart is clean,
who desires not what is vain.
R. Lord, this is the people that longs to see your face.
He shall receive a blessing from the LORD,
a reward from God his savior.
Such is the race that seeks for him,
that seeks the face of the God of Jacob.
R. Lord, this is the people that longs to see your face.

Alleluia See Mt 11:25

R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Blessed are you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth;
you have revealed to little ones the mysteries of the Kingdom.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel LK 12:54-59

Jesus said to the crowds,
"When you see a cloud rising in the west
you say immediately that it is going to rain–and so it does;
and when you notice that the wind is blowing from the south
you say that it is going to be hot–and so it is.
You hypocrites!
You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky;
why do you not know how to interpret the present time?
"Why do you not judge for yourselves what is right?
If you are to go with your opponent before a magistrate,
make an effort to settle the matter on the way;
otherwise your opponent will turn you over to the judge,
and the judge hand you over to the constable,
and the constable throw you into prison.
I say to you, you will not be released
until you have paid the last penny."

. . . striving to preserve the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace. (Ephesians 4:3)

You've probably heard of the French phrase esprit de corps. It means "spirit of the body," and it describes a feeling of fellowship and common loyalty that people might have for one another. Businesses and sports teams try to cultivate this attitude because it can help individuals work together as a cohesive team. You may have experienced this feeling yourself when you were part of a group that accomplished something together.

This sense of being part of something bigger than yourself is also a good starting point for understanding what Paul means by the "unity of the spirit." He tells the Ephesians they have a high calling: to work together for the coming of God's kingdom, to do and to become something magnificent and meaningful together.

Unity in the Spirit is a gift that God gave to each one of us when he made us part of the body of Christ. No matter who we are, male or female, young or old, and no matter what nationality or race, we share the same heavenly Father and we have all received the same Spirit.

As much as our unity is a gift from God, however, we still need to work to preserve it. That's where esprit de corps comes in. When we're trying to live in the Spirit, with each person using the gifts God has given him toward a greater good, we can remain united. We can put aside our differences and work toward something meaningful together: his mission on earth. It's something much more important than watching our sports team win or successfully completing a group project at work or school. We are building God's eternal kingdom and pushing back the darkness of sin!

The devil wants to isolate us, but as we work together, we can overcome him and his efforts to divide us. It doesn't matter whether you're evangelizing, serving the poor, or just setting up chairs for a meeting. When people see members of the Church loving and serving Jesus as one, they will take notice!

"Lord, thank you for bringing me into your family. Help me to preserve that unity as I join my brothers and sisters in building your kingdom!"

Psalm 24:1-6
Luke 12:54-59

From today's 1st Holy Scripture:
"...you were also called to the one hope of your call;
one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all..."

It is hard to imagine in our lives, that billions have been baptized as Christians, and that billions have made up the body of Christ and that perhaps then, maybe a billion souls could be in Heaven. Yet, think of this, that if each soul has at least one guardian angel and on top of that another helper of sorts from heaven that we know of, then, we can multiply the billions times 2, or 3, or 10 for all we know. This speaks volumes of our worth to God, and even more volumes to the magnitude of Heaven. Protestants have tried to calculate the actual dimensions of Heaven. But that is not right, because we are speaking of realms and dimensions, and not merely an earthly dwelling. And all of this speaks to the magnitude of God. A simple universe is not enough for Him.

psalms

We pray today;
" Lord, this is the people that longs to see your face.
The LORD's are the earth and its fullness; the world and those who dwell in it. For he founded it upon the seas
and established it upon the rivers."

In the Gospel today we heard our Master and Teacher:
"Why do you not judge for yourselves what is right?
If you are to go with your opponent before a magistrate,
make an effort to settle the matter on the way"

There's many arguments among people. There is discord. There is animosity. There are then "enemies". Some severe, some not so much, but still, at odds and refuse to talk with each other or work things out. This is foolishness and things that belong to the dark side.
Our Lord asks "how can you come to ME to receive ME when I stand for healing and forgiveness, purity and holiness, and go back to that?"
Such is the world and how it refuses to grow in love of Love, with God our Father.
So let's take it further.
I heard of a family praying the "Our Father" one night, and the dad left in the middle of the prayer, just walked out of the house. The family was baffled. He eventually came back later than evening, and they asked him what happened. He said "I couldn't say the words "forgive me as I forgive those who trespass against me", because I remembered I was angry at my neighbor, and I went to forgive them so I could ask God to forgive me like that.

I'm paraphrasing the story, but you get the gist. And it goes deeper.
In the Holy Eucharist, we are not to defile our Lord with a defiled soul. We are not to receive Him unworthily. So, in line for Holy Communion, let's say, you remember you are angry at someone and haven't forgiven them! OH NO! Now what? LOL, simple, no need to run out and cause a distraction, simply forgive them on the spot, then receive God to seal you with His love to love others. Now, this is not applicable to mortal sin, or to theft, but it is applicable to forgiveness. For mortal sin and other sins we need to reconcile even deeper, to make amends to neighbor, and to God righteously.

All this so we can live every day worthy to die for Him and be offered to Him in such a loving way, that God will take notice of your light shining bright for when He comes and says "My LOVE! My LIGHT! Come with ME!"
................
Lord, that I may live and love like Thee forever!
