† ".. Who Sent Me .."

Saint Quote:

“"If we wish to make any progress in the service of God we must begin every day of our life with new eagerness. We must keep ourselves in the presence of God as much as possible and have no other view or end in all our actions but the divine honor."” -St. Charles Borromeo

Today’s Meditation

"My Jesus, it is truly easy to become holy; it just takes a little good will! And if He finds this minimum of good will in a soul, He quickly gives Himself to her. And nothing can stop Him, neither our faults nor our falls, absolutely nothing. Jesus hurries to help that soul; and if the soul is faithful to this grace from God, she can in a short time reach the highest levels of holiness that a created being can attain here below. God is very generous and does not refuse His grace to anyone. He gives even more than we ask for. The shortest road is faithfulness to the inspirations of the Holy Spirit." —St. Maria Faustina Kowalska, 291

St Florian

St. Florian (C. 250-304 A.D.) was a commander in the Roman army in what is now Austria. He served during the reign of Emperor Diocletian, who violently persecuted Christians. Among Florian's military duties was the organization of firefighting brigades. St. Florian was secretly a Christian and was known for miraculously saving a town from being destroyed by fire; after praying to God for help, he extinguished a raging fire with a single bucket of water. Word reached the Emperor that Florian was not enforcing the ban against Christianity in his territory. He was put under investigation and was discovered to be a Christian. In one account, it was for refusing to offer sacrifice to the gods; in another, for refusing to execute a group of Christians. He was then condemned to be tortured and executed for his Christian faith. Refusing to recant, St. Florian was then flayed alive, scourged, and martyred by being dumped in the river with a millstone attached to his body. His body was later recovered, and today his relics are venerated at a church named for him in Kraków, Poland. St. Florian is the patron saint of firefighters, chimney-sweeps, brewers, drowning victims, Austria, Poland, and against floods, fires, and battles. St. Florian's feast day is May 4th.

Lectionary: 285

Reading I

Acts 14:5-18

There was an attempt in Iconium

by both the Gentiles and the Jews,

together with their leaders,

to attack and stone Paul and Barnabas.

They realized it,

and fled to the Lycaonian cities of Lystra and Derbe

and to the surrounding countryside,

where they continued to proclaim the Good News.

At Lystra there was a crippled man, lame from birth,

who had never walked.

He listened to Paul speaking, who looked intently at him,

saw that he had the faith to be healed,

and called out in a loud voice, “Stand up straight on your feet.”

He jumped up and began to walk about.

When the crowds saw what Paul had done,

they cried out in Lycaonian,

“The gods have come down to us in human form.”

They called Barnabas “Zeus” and Paul “Hermes,”

because he was the chief speaker.

And the priest of Zeus, whose temple was at the entrance to the city,

brought oxen and garlands to the gates,

for he together with the people intended to offer sacrifice.

The Apostles Barnabas and Paul tore their garments

when they heard this and rushed out into the crowd, shouting,

“Men, why are you doing this?

We are of the same nature as you, human beings.

We proclaim to you good news

that you should turn from these idols to the living God,

who made heaven and earth and sea and all that is in them.

In past generations he allowed all Gentiles to go their own ways;

yet, in bestowing his goodness,

he did not leave himself without witness,

for he gave you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons,

and filled you with nourishment and gladness for your hearts.”

Even with these words, they scarcely restrained the crowds

from offering sacrifice to them.

Responsorial Psalm

Psalm 115:1-2, 3-4, 15-16

R. (1ab) Not to us, O Lord, but to your name give the glory.

or:

R. Alleluia.

Not to us, O LORD, not to us

but to your name give glory

because of your mercy, because of your truth.

Why should the pagans say,

“Where is their God?”

R. Not to us, O Lord, but to your name give the glory.

or:

R. Alleluia.

Our God is in heaven;

whatever he wills, he does.

Their idols are silver and gold,

the handiwork of men.

R. Not to us, O Lord, but to your name give the glory.

or:

R. Alleluia.

May you be blessed by the LORD,

who made heaven and earth.

Heaven is the heaven of the LORD,

but the earth he has given to the children of men.

R. Not to us, O Lord, but to your name give the glory.

or:

R. Alleluia.

Alleluia

John 14:26

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

The Holy Spirit will teach you everything

and remind you of all I told you.

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel

John 14:21-26

Jesus said to his disciples:

“Whoever has my commandments and observes them

is the one who loves me.

Whoever loves me will be loved by my Father,

and I will love him and reveal myself to him.”

Judas, not the Iscariot, said to him,

“Master, then what happened that you will reveal yourself to us

and not to the world?”

Jesus answered and said to him,

“Whoever loves me will keep my word,

and my Father will love him,

and we will come to him and make our dwelling with him.

Whoever does not love me does not keep my words;

yet the word you hear is not mine

but that of the Father who sent me.

“I have told you this while I am with you.

The Advocate, the Holy Spirit

whom the Father will send in my name --

he will teach you everything

and remind you of all that I told you.”

Daily Meditation: John 14:21-26

We will come to him and make our dwelling with him. (John 14:23)

The Gospels tell us that Jesus spent a lot of time in other people’s houses. What kind of guest do you imagine he was? It’s easy to picture him sharing wisdom with his hosts around the dinner table. But we might also picture him offering advice on upcoming DIY projects, joining in songs and prayers, and maybe even telling a few good jokes! It must surely have been a privilege to be able to host him!

In today’s Gospel, Jesus promises something even more awesome than a promise to visit for a few hours. Visitors eventually leave, but Jesus offers his constant presence. And not just him: both he and his Father will come and live with anyone who loves him. They will choose to make a home in you.

Do you believe that Jesus wants to be close to you? Not just when you are praying or when you’re at Mass, but all the time? When he speaks about making a dwelling in your heart, Jesus means that he can be with you in every situation. What a great reminder to speak to him throughout your day: he’s already there!

So Jesus is more than a guest. He’s a resident. And unlike a guest, someone who lives in a home will naturally feel some responsibility for its upkeep. They might even have some good suggestions for how to improve it. That means that, with your cooperation, Jesus can renovate your heart.

The indwelling of the Lord is not passive. He is an attentive occupant who knows the very structure of your heart—your priorities, attachments, and thoughts. He cares deeply about you. He delights in the parts that are working well, and he calls for improvements to the parts that don’t: the moments when your mouth has run like a leaky tap or your self-control has crumbled like old plaster.

At times these internal repairs may feel like too much. But don’t be overwhelmed; you are not working alone! Jesus is eager to work with you. He’s just waiting for you to invite him to help. So identify one “internal DIY project” you’d like to work on today, and ask him to roll up his sleeves and join you.

“Lord, I welcome you into my heart. Shape it and make it your home.”

From today's Holy Gospel:

".. Jesus said to his disciples:

“Whoever has my commandments and observes them

is the one who loves me.

Whoever loves me will be loved by my Father,

and I will love him and reveal myself to him.”

...

“I have told you this while I am with you.

The Advocate, the Holy Spirit

whom the Father will send in my name --

he will teach you everything

and remind you of all that I told you.” .. ”

From Roberto Juarez:
"Today the Lord invites us to three very concrete things: to truly love him, keeping his word, to open our hearts so that God may dwell in us, and to trust in the action of the Holy Spirit.
Let us pray that our faith does not remain in words, that our lives be coherent, and that we learn to listen to the Spirit. So that, living united to Jesus of Nazareth, we may discover that God is not far off... but dwells in the depths of us. And from there, it transforms our lives." End quote.

Our Lord disappeared. Then, He reappeared, and then, disappeared again.
Is that right? And not once, but several times, right?
How does He reappear still today?
In the Holy Spirit. Just like He said He would.
How? Let me say it again: "Whoever loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and reveal myself to him.” And then He said: "Whoever loves me will keep my word,

and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our dwelling with him."
It is no longer us speaking, but Him, when we gather 2 or 3.
I was speaking to a fellow catechists, and we agreed that it seems strange that these students at times, seem to be giving unknown knowledge about teachings.

Where does that come from?

This is why I enjoy getting together with others in studies...for the Lord starts talking Himself! I'm serious. HE is Here. He is among us still today. Let the HOLY SPIRIT FLOW!
