† "...Do You Allow Entrance...."

Quote of the Day

"Let us love the cross very much, for it is there that we discover our life, our true love, and our strength in our greatest difficulties." — St. Maria de Mattias

Today's Meditation

"God will forgive you if you ask him to. Though your sins be numerous as the grains of sand on the shore, God's merciful forgiveness is far greater than your sins. Do not be afraid. Trust in his love. Repent of your sins without delay and return to the house of the Father. He is waiting for you. " —Patrick Madrid, p.15

An excerpt from A Year with the Bible

Daily Verse

"And now, children, remain in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence and not be put to shame by him at his coming." — 1 John 2:28

St. Genesius of Rome (d. 303 AD) was a renowned actor and playwright, the leader of a popular acting troupe during the reign of Emperor Diocletian. When the Emperor was killing Christians, Genesius wrote plays to mock them and expose their secret rites to ridicule. To research for a play mocking baptism, he went to a priest pretending to desire the sacraments and was fully instructed as a catechumen. Genesius prepared his play and instructed the other actors in their parts. On performance day the Emperor was present. Genesius played the lead character seeking baptism, and the rite was performed in such a ludicrous manner that all present laughed. As the water was poured over Genesius' head by an actor playing the priest's part, Genesius saw a vision of the heavens opened and the hand of God touching him. He also saw an angel who showed him that his many sins had been washed away through the valid baptism he had just received. At that moment Genesius' heart was changed by the Holy Spirit and he believed in the truth of Christianity. At the conclusion of the play Genesius boldly declared his new faith, recounting how he had been a scoffer until that moment. He implored the audience, including the Emperor, to follow Christ. The crowd thought this was part of the performance, but once they understood it was real, Genesius was seized. The Emperor, furious, subjected him to cruel tortures daily to make him renounce his faith in Christ. Genesius staunchly refused and was beheaded. The Christians collected his body and buried him with the other martyrs. St. Genesius is the patron saint of comedians, dancers, actors, musicians, printers, and torture victims. His feast day is August 25th.

Lectionary: 425
Reading I

1 Thessalonians 1:1-5, 8b-10

Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy to the Church of the Thessalonians
in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:
grace to you and peace.

We give thanks to God always for all of you,
remembering you in our prayers,
unceasingly calling to mind your work of faith and labor of love
and endurance in hope of our Lord Jesus Christ,
before our God and Father,
knowing, brothers and sisters loved by God, how you were chosen.
For our Gospel did not come to you in word alone,
but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with much conviction.
You know what sort of people we were among you for your sake.
In every place your faith in God has gone forth,
so that we have no need to say anything.
For they themselves openly declare about us
what sort of reception we had among you,
and how you turned to God from idols
to serve the living and true God and to await his Son from heaven,
whom he raised from the dead, Jesus,
who delivers us from the coming wrath.

Responsorial Psalm

Psalm 149:1b-2, 3-4, 5-6a and 9b

R. (see 4a) The Lord takes delight in his people.
or:
R. Alleluia.
Sing to the LORD a new song

of praise in the assembly of the faithful.
Let Israel be glad in their maker,

let the children of Zion rejoice in their king.

R. The Lord takes delight in his people.
or:
R. Alleluia.
Let them praise his name in the festive dance,

let them sing praise to him with timbrel and harp.
For the LORD loves his people,

and he adorns the lowly with victory.

R. The Lord takes delight in his people.
or:
R. Alleluia.
Let the faithful exult in glory;

let them sing for joy upon their couches;
Let the high praises of God be in their throats.

This is the glory of all his faithful. Alleluia.

R. The Lord takes delight in his people.
or:
R. Alleluia.

Alleluia

John 10:27

R. Alleluia, alleluia.
My sheep hear my voice, says the Lord;
I know them, and they follow me.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel

Matthew 23:13-22

Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples:
"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites.
You lock the Kingdom of heaven before men.
You do not enter yourselves,
nor do you allow entrance to those trying to enter.

"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites.
You traverse sea and land to make one convert,
and when that happens you make him a child of Gehenna
twice as much as yourselves.

"Woe to you, blind guides, who say,
'If one swears by the temple, it means nothing,
but if one swears by the gold of the temple, one is obligated.'
Blind fools, which is greater, the gold,
or the temple that made the gold sacred?
And you say, 'If one swears by the altar, it means nothing,
but if one swears by the gift on the altar, one is obligated.'
You blind ones, which is greater, the gift,
or the altar that makes the gift sacred?
One who swears by the altar swears by it and all that is upon it;
one who swears by the temple swears by it
and by him who dwells in it;
one who swears by heaven swears by the throne of God
and by him who is seated on it."

Daily Meditation: 1 Thessalonians 1:1-5, 8-10

We give thanks to God always for all of you. (1 Thessalonians 1:2)

Paul had been having a rough time of it. Traveling with Silas and Timothy, he had encountered a string of disappointments as they sought to bring the gospel into modern-day Greece. They met with some success in Philippi, Thessalonica, and Berea, but they also endured angry mobs, arrests, and severe beatings. Probably still hurting from all this mistreatment, Paul left his companions and pressed on to Athens and Corinth—still, with minimal success. That's five cities and approximately 155 miles, all with very little to show for it!

So you can imagine how excited Paul must have been when Timothy and Silas gave him a good report about the believers in Thessalonica. Even in a hostile environment, these new brothers and sisters were holding fast to Jesus, worshipping together, and boldly sharing their faith.

Hearing such good news, Paul decided that he and his companions should write a letter to these faithful Thessalonians. He wanted to clear up some misunderstandings and encourage them to persevere in their faith. And that letter—a joyful, inspiring, and uplifting note—is what we begin reading today.

It can be easy to see Paul's letters as a series of teachings and doctrines. But these letters also reveal the heart of a man who loved these new believers with the love of Christ. They reveal a passionate, intelligent man who dedicated all of his talents to building up those believers' faith and trust in the Lord. Read any one of his letters, and you'll see how much Paul longed for them to know Jesus more and more deeply.

Keep this in mind in the coming days as we continue to journey through this letter. Remember that it is a personal message to dear friends in the Lord. Remember, also, that the Spirit can speak to you about Jesus as you ponder Paul's words. In fact, try reading today's passage as if Paul, now in heaven, is giving "thanks to God always" for you (1 Thessalonians 1:2). And join him in thanking God for all your brothers and sisters in Christ.

"Jesus, thank you for the witness of St. Paul—and for every person who has helped me grow closer to you!"

Psalm 149:1-6, 9
Matthew 23:13-22

From Roberto Juarez:
"This passage from Matthew's gospel is a strong warning against hypocrisy, legalism, and inauthenticity in religious life. Jesus calls the scribes and Pharisees to account for their actions and teachings that lead people away from God rather than toward them. This teaching invites us to examine our own spiritual lives, to be authentic in our faith, and to lead others with wisdom and truth. We are called to focus our lives on the essentials, cultivating a genuine relationship with God and avoiding any form of hypocrisy or superficiality in our faith." end quote.

Wow.
We can actually be obstacles to others?
Yes.
But, we can see this on the inverse.
We can actually be agents pointing the way to Heaven.
Like the quiet little nun helping how she can.
Like the mother, that sacrifices herself to bring her children to church.
Like the father, who tries so hard behind the scenes, to be a man of God.

And guess what?? People notice.
People are watching your every move.

And the evil one is watching with even greater scrutiny.
We cannot let up.
Let up, and bugs and snakes come into the house, just leave the door open for a little bit and see how hard it is to get those bugs and snakes out of your home and your life!
What makes for a great obstacle that Jesus sees? The two face life we tend to live. The worst is from priests. Our Lord does not like that at all! But we need to help our priests! In a good way! And then, the Lord sees the body, the rest of us, boy, he does NOT like people living a double life. EVILDOERS! He says. Locking the gates of Heaven.
WHy? He desires Holiness. He desires His life. He desires good. He desires YOU. Yes He loves you, but just because I love my kids, doesn't mean I don't expect goodness, I don't want them slipping....away.
That is our Job with God's children. This is God's business. And He wants us all about His business. Why? Because we are dealing with what is critical....Love.
