† " .Those Who Ask . .."

†Saint Quote
""Let us trust in him who has placed this burden upon us. What we ourselves cannot bear let us bear with the help of Christ. For he is all-powerful, and he tells us: 'My yoke is easy, and my burden light.'"
— St. Boniface

† MEDITATION OF THE DAY
"What prevents us from receiving more abundant graces from God may be quite simply our not being sufficiently grateful and not thanking him for the graces he has already given us. There is no doubt that if we thank God with all our heart for each grace received, especially for the inspirations [of the Holy Spirit], he will grant us more."
— Fr. Jacques Philippe, p. 28
AN EXCERPT FROM
In the School of the Holy Spirit

VERSE OF THE DAY
"So then, my beloved, obedient as you have always been, not only when I am present but all the more now when I am absent, work out your salvation with fear and trembling. For God is the one who, for his good purpose, works in you both to desire and to work."
Philippians 2:12-13

ST. JUSTINA OF PADUA

St. Justina of Padua (d. 304 A.D.) was a young and pious Christian woman who dedicated her virginity to Christ. She received baptism at the hands of St. Prosdocimus, the first Bishop of Padua in Italy. At the age of sixteen she was arrested for being a Christian under the persecutions of Roman Emperor Maximinian, and was ordered to make sacrifice to the pagan gods. When she refused, she was stabbed with a sword and left to die. Overlooking the field where she was martyred is a basilica named in her honor which holds her relics, as well as those of St. Luke the Evangelist, St. Matthias the Apostle, St. Prosdocimus, and other patron saints of Padua. Her feast was the day the Catholic naval forces won victory over the Turks in the Battle of Lepanto in 1571, which increased her popularity among the faithful. St. Justina of Padua's feast day is October 7th.

Memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary

Lectionary: 464
Reading I

Mal 3:13-20b

You have defied me in word, says the LORD,

yet you ask, "What have we spoken against you?"
You have said, "It is vain to serve God,

and what do we profit by keeping his command,
And going about in penitential dress

in awe of the LORD of hosts?
Rather must we call the proud blessed;

for indeed evildoers prosper,

and even tempt God with impunity."
Then they who fear the LORD spoke with one another,

and the LORD listened attentively;
And a record book was written before him

of those who fear the LORD and trust in his name.
And they shall be mine, says the LORD of hosts,

my own special possession, on the day I take action.
And I will have compassion on them,

as a man has compassion on his son who serves him.
Then you will again see the distinction

between the just and the wicked;
Between the one who serves God,

and the one who does not serve him.
For lo, the day is coming, blazing like an oven,

when all the proud and all evildoers will be stubble,
And the day that is coming will set them on fire,

leaving them neither root nor branch,

says the LORD of hosts.
But for you who fear my name, there will arise

the sun of justice with its healing rays.

Responsorial Psalm

1:1-2, 3, 4 and 6

R. (Ps 40:5a) Blessed are they who hope in the Lord.
Blessed the man who follows not

the counsel of the wicked
Nor walks in the way of sinners,

nor sits in the company of the insolent,
But delights in the law of the LORD

and meditates on his law day and night.
R. Blessed are they who hope in the Lord.
He is like a tree

planted near running water,
That yields its fruit in due season,

and whose leaves never fade.

Whatever he does, prospers.
R. Blessed are they who hope in the Lord.
Not so the wicked, not so;

they are like chaff which the wind drives away.
For the LORD watches over the way of the just,

but the way of the wicked vanishes.
R. Blessed are they who hope in the Lord.

Alleluia

See Acts 16:14b

R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Open our hearts, O Lord,
to listen to the words of your Son.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel

Lk 11:5-13

Jesus said to his disciples:
"Suppose one of you has a friend
to whom he goes at midnight and says,
'Friend, lend me three loaves of bread,
for a friend of mine has arrived at my house from a journey
and I have nothing to offer him,'
and he says in reply from within,
'Do not bother me; the door has already been locked
and my children and I are already in bed.
I cannot get up to give you anything.'
I tell you, if he does not get up to give him the loaves
because of their friendship,
he will get up to give him whatever he needs
because of his persistence.

"And I tell you, ask and you will receive;
seek and you will find;
knock and the door will be opened to you.
For everyone who asks, receives;
and the one who seeks, finds;
and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
What father among you would hand his son a snake
when he asks for a fish?
Or hand him a scorpion when he asks for an egg?
If you then, who are wicked,
know how to give good gifts to your children,
how much more will the Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit
to those who ask him?"

Daily Meditation: Luke 11:5-13

. . . a friend to whom he goes at midnight. (Luke 11:5)

Would you feel comfortable awakening someone at midnight to ask for a favor? You'd probably do it only with a close friend—someone who cares about you so much that your problem naturally becomes their problem. You trust this person completely, and they, for their part, would never turn you away. So even if you have to pound on their door, you are confident that they will eventually respond!

It's this intimate bond of understanding between good friends that Jesus envisions for us when it comes to our relationship with our heavenly Father. What does such a "call-me-at-midnight" friendship look like? Here are a few qualities:

Vulnerability. Close friends open their hearts to and with each other in raw, tender situations. They offer presence, compassion, pushback, and maybe even a sense of humor.

Habitual communication. It's second nature to pick up the phone and call a good friend (or hear the phone ring yourself) whenever something is going on with the other person. Friends want to share their lives, both the good and the bad.

Trust. "Call-me-at-midnight" friends know and value each other's goodness and faithfulness, so they implicitly trust one another.

Mutual service. Dear friends care for each other's concrete needs because they desire what's best for each other. They show up when their friend asks for help without tallying who has done more.

The qualities of wonderful friendships here on earth show a dynamic, gritty picture of love, don't they? It's like Jesus' parable, where the sleepy-eyed man shares his family's provisions because his friend knocks persistently, not because he likes to be awakened at midnight.

Your heavenly Father is a dynamic, real-life friend. He is your dearest friend, even if he sometimes seems "slow to answer the door." But Jesus urges us not to give up, not to mistrust him, and never to stop asking the Father for what we need. Because in the end, he will give us every good gift!

"Father, give me the grace to trust you more than any other friend."

From Today's Holy Scripture:
"Then they who fear the LORD spoke with one another,

and the LORD listened attentively;
And a record book was written before him

of those who fear the LORD and trust in his name.
And they shall be mine, says the LORD of hosts,

my own special possession, on the day I take action.
And I will have compassion on them,

as a man has compassion on his son who serves him.
Then you will again see the distinction

between the just and the wicked;
Between the one who serves God,

and the one who does not serve him."

psalms

We pray in Psalms:
"Blessed are they who hope in the Lord.
Blessed the man who follows not

the counsel of the wicked
Nor walks in the way of sinners,

nor sits in the company of the insolent,
But delights in the law of the LORD

and meditates on his law day and night."

The whole of your life shall be for Him. Not a piece, but the whole. Too many give a bit, but the rest?

Our Lord speaks, the TRUTH speaks:
"Jesus said to his disciples:
"Suppose one of you has a friend
to whom he goes at midnight and says,
'Friend, lend me three loaves of bread,
for a friend of mine has arrived at my house from a journey
and I have nothing to offer him,'
and he says in reply from within,
'Do not bother me; the door has already been locked
and my children and I are already in bed.
I cannot get up to give you anything.'
I tell you, if he does not get up to give him the loaves
because of their friendship,
he will get up to give him whatever he needs
because of his persistence."

And our Lord gives the point of the story to relate us to Him:

""And I tell you, ask and you will receive;
seek and you will find;
knock and the door will be opened to you.
For everyone who asks, receives;
and the one who seeks, finds;
and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened."

Our Lord desires that we ask for good things.

Once I asked for a bad thing, and what happened?
He ripped it out of my soul.

He can only give good things. He turned my crying prayer of desperation into something good and everlasting.
And so I am disgusted with my desires, and I seek his desires alone.
I ask that you trust in this alone, that He is worthy, and that He is available to You. Ask Him for the good and HE cannot resist!

Let's pray:
Lord God and Father,
I ask today for grace and the Holy Spirit to do Your will.
So that we do not measure the cost, but give with all our heart, mind and soul...true Love to Love.

amen

from your brother in Christ,
Adrian

For as high as the heavens are above the earth,

so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him;
