†Saint Quote
"Here is a rule for everyday life: Do not do anything which you cannot offer to God."
–St. John Vianney

†Today's Meditation
"The strength of the soul consists in its faculties, passions and desires, all of which are governed by the will. Now when these faculties, passions and desires are directed by the will toward God, and turned away from all that is not God, then the strength of the soul is kept for God, and thus the soul is able to love God with all its strength."
—St. John of the Cross, p. 259

An Excerpt From
Ascent of Mt. Carmel

†Daily Verse
"And Samuel said, 'Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.'"

St. Anselm of Canterbury

St. Anselm (1033–1109) was born into a noble family in the Lombardy region of Italy. The example of his pious mother led him to great faith, and he sought to enter the monastery at age 15. However, the abbot refused him due to Anselm's stern father. After his mother's death Anselm left home and settled in Normandy to study under the direction of a famed monk named Lanfranc. Upon the death of his father, Anselm became a Benedictine monk at the age of 27. Due to his brilliance, Anselm became a teacher at the abbey's school and prior of the monastery. He went on to become the most learned theologian, philosopher, and mystic of his generation, the greatest since St. Augustine of Hippo. Anselm's fame led to his appointment as Archbishop of Canterbury in England, succeeding Lanfranc in this office, where he went on to correct abuses against the Church at the hand of the English kings. Twice he was banished from the island while appealing to Rome for assistance, and twice he returned to Canterbury to carry on his duties until his death. His abilities as an extraordinary theologian, negotiator, and statesman greatly supported the cause of the Church. As archbishop he continued his monastic lifestyle and intellectual pursuits. He composed several philosophical and theological treatises, as well as a series of beautiful prayers and meditations, which led him to be proclaimed a Doctor of the Church by Pope Clement XI in 1720. His feast day is celebrated on April 21st.

Thursday in the Octave of Easter

Reading I Acts 3:11-26

As the crippled man who had been cured clung to Peter and John,
all the people hurried in amazement toward them
in the portico called "Solomon's Portico."
When Peter saw this, he addressed the people,
"You children of Israel, why are you amazed at this,
and why do you look so intently at us
as if we had made him walk by our own power or piety?
The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob,
the God of our fathers, has glorified his servant Jesus
whom you handed over and denied in Pilate's presence,
when he had decided to release him.
You denied the Holy and Righteous One
and asked that a murderer be released to you.
The author of life you put to death,
but God raised him from the dead; of this we are witnesses.
And by faith in his name,
this man, whom you see and know, his name has made strong,
and the faith that comes through it
has given him this perfect health,
in the presence of all of you.
Now I know, brothers and sisters,
that you acted out of ignorance, just as your leaders did;
but God has thus brought to fulfillment
what he had announced beforehand
through the mouth of all the prophets,
that his Christ would suffer.
Repent, therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be wiped away,
and that the Lord may grant you times of refreshment
and send you the Christ already appointed for you, Jesus,
whom heaven must receive until the times of universal restoration
of which God spoke through the mouth
of his holy prophets from of old.
For Moses said:

A prophet like me will the Lord, your God, raise up for you

from among your own kin;

to him you shall listen in all that he may say to you.

Everyone who does not listen to that prophet

will be cut off from the people.

"Moreover, all the prophets who spoke,
from Samuel and those afterwards, also announced these days.
You are the children of the prophets
and of the covenant that God made with your ancestors
when he said to Abraham,
In your offspring all the families of the earth shall be blessed.
For you first, God raised up his servant and sent him to bless you
by turning each of you from your evil ways."

Responsorial Psalm 8:2ab and 5, 6-7, 8-9

R. (2ab) O Lord, our God, how wonderful your name in all the earth!
or:
R. Alleluia.
O LORD, our Lord,

how glorious is your name over all the earth!
What is man that you should be mindful of him,

or the son of man that you should care for him?
R. O Lord, our God, how wonderful your name in all the earth!
or:
R. Alleluia.
You have made him little less than the angels,

and crowned him with glory and honor.
You have given him rule over the works of your hands,

putting all things under his feet.
R. O Lord, our God, how wonderful your name in all the earth!
or:
R. Alleluia.
All sheep and oxen,

yes, and the beasts of the field,
The birds of the air, the fishes of the sea,

and whatever swims the paths of the seas.
R. O Lord, our God, how wonderful your name in all the earth!
or:
R. Alleluia.

Alleluia Ps 118:24

R. Alleluia, alleluia.
This is the day the LORD has made;
let us be glad and rejoice in it.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel Lk 24:35-48

The disciples of Jesus recounted what had taken place along the way,
and how they had come to recognize him in the breaking of bread.

While they were still speaking about this,
he stood in their midst and said to them,
"Peace be with you."
But they were startled and terrified
and thought that they were seeing a ghost.
Then he said to them, "Why are you troubled?
And why do questions arise in your hearts?
Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself.
Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones
as you can see I have."
And as he said this,
he showed them his hands and his feet.
While they were still incredulous for joy and were amazed,
he asked them, "Have you anything here to eat?"
They gave him a piece of baked fish;
he took it and ate it in front of them.

He said to them,
"These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you,
that everything written about me in the law of Moses
and in the prophets and psalms must be fulfilled."
Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.
And he said to them,
"Thus it is written that the Christ would suffer
and rise from the dead on the third day
and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins,
would be preached in his name
to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
You are witnesses of these things."

Daily Meditation: Luke 24:35-48

Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. (Luke 24:39)

Have you ever taken a difficult class and struggled to understand the subject? Maybe you had to get extra help from the teacher after class. Perhaps the teacher had to explain a hard concept more than once or find different ways to present it before understanding finally dawned on you.

Jesus is like that patient and sympathetic teacher. Today's Gospel reading shows how his disciples needed extra help to understand his resurrection. Jesus didn't expect them to get it right away, so he found more than one way to get his message across.

First, two angels appeared at Jesus' empty tomb to announce that he had been raised from the dead. But when the other disciples heard the story, it seemed so farfetched that they didn't believe it (Luke 24:1-11).

Then Jesus appeared to two disciples on the road to Emmaus and spoke with them. He even taught them about the words in Scripture that point to his resurrection. And still these disciples didn't recognize Jesus right away (Luke 24:13-34)!

That brings us to today's story, when Jesus appears suddenly in the disciples' midst. They are terrified! He immediately reassures them and even eats a piece of fish to show them that he is flesh and blood, not a ghost. He then opens their minds "to understand the Scriptures" so they can see that he has fulfilled all of God's promises (Luke 24:45). Suddenly things are making sense.

We will never fully know or understand Jesus during our time on earth. But that doesn't mean he wants to keep us in the dark. It may take time to grasp his love for you. You may need lots of nudges from his Spirit to get you going in the right direction. And that's okay. Like any good teacher, Jesus builds on your understanding one step at a time. He may reach you through a homily or a Bible passage that speaks to a problem you're having. Or maybe it's through a relative or friend whose faith inspires you. He will always find ways to draw you closer so that you can enjoy a life of deeper joy and friendship with him.

"Thank you, Jesus, for being such a patient, loving teacher."

Acts 3:11-26
Psalm 8:2, 5-9

From today's 1st Holy Scripture:
"The author of life you put to death, but God raised him from the dead; of this we are witnesses."

Can you believe a witness? Does this then make you a judge? In a way. Can you be merciful or can you judge rightly? What is the benchmark you will judge by...to believe?

psalms

We pray in Psalms:
"O LORD, our Lord, how glorious is your name over all the earth! What is man that you should be mindful of him, or the son of man that you should care for him? O Lord, our God, how wonderful your name in all the earth!"

2cents2

In today's Gospel we heard:
" ...he said to them, "Why are you troubled?
And why do questions arise in your hearts?"

Why do we question and doubt even if proof is right in front of you?
The Jews had Jesus proving He was God.
And the disciples had Jesus proving He was God even after He died.

And still they doubted, and were afraid.

And so let's discuss the first inherent evil: a little doubt.
We causes doubt? What if I propose to you that it stems from pride? That we know better, or want to be better.

I am learning, and I want you to learn how valuable faith is.

Faith is precious. We should nourish it. We should use it. We should share it. We should point it out in others and lift others up for their faith in God. And how can we prove faith? Glory. Jesus proves faith on the cross. And it becomes the most glorious moment in history. Our Lord always performed miracles for faith, and always said "go, your faith has saved you".

We know what is going to happen...so make the move of faith, me and you are making the movement happen, to restore the world to Christ the King.
Mother of God, pray for us.
Holy saints and angels, pray for us.

from your brother in Christ,
Adrian
