† "....At That Time...."

Quote of the Day

"If we but paused for a moment to consider attentively what takes place in this Sacrament of the Eucharist, I am sure that the thought of Christ's love for us would transform the coldness of our hearts into a fire of love and gratitude." St. Teresa of Avila - Teresa of Jesus

Today's Meditation

"The works of man, whether they are good or bad, are not always isolated, transitory acts; more often, especially in the case of the leaders of nations and those who are invested with public authority, they continue to subsist after they are concluded, either in the memory of other men or in public acclaim, as a result of the consequences they have had and the scandal they have caused. Thus, at first sight, a particular, secret crime seems to be only a private, personal deed; but it becomes social on account of its effects. Certainly it is of faith that there is a particular judgment, and that every man, at the instant of his soul's departure from the body, appears before the tribunal of God to hear his eternal sentence pronounced. Yet this judgment cannot suffice, and it is essential that it should be followed by another public judgment, in which God will not examine the actions in isolation and taken in themselves, but will examine them in their effects upon other men, in the good or evil deriving from them for families and peoples—in a word, in the consequences they produced and which those who perpetrated them ought to have foreseen."
— Fr. Charles Arminjon, p. 94

Daily Verse

"But you, beloved, remember the words spoken beforehand by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ, for they told you, "In [the] last time there will be scoffers who will live according to their own godless desires." These are the ones who cause divisions; they live on the natural plane, devoid of the Spirit. But you, beloved, build yourselves up in your most holy faith; pray in the holy Spirit. Keep yourselves in the love of God and wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life." Jude 1:17-21

St. Bonaventure (1221–1274) was born with the name Giovanni in Tuscany, Italy. As a child he became seriously ill and was in danger of death until his mother brought him to St. Francis of Assisi, who was then living in the region as a mendicant friar. It is said that St. Francis healed the child and afterward exclaimed, "O buona ventura (O good fortune)!" when he prophetically perceived how great the child would one day become, and this is how he began to be called Bonaventure. He joined the Franciscan order at the age of 22 and went on to study theology at the University of Paris, where he became famous friends with the Dominican friar St. Thomas Aquinas. The two friends graduated together, each insisting that the other be the first to receive honors. St. Bonaventure is regarded as one of the great philosophers and theologians of the Middle Ages, earning the name "Seraphic Doctor." In addition to his many writings, including a Life of St. Francis of Assisi, he was elected to serve as head of his order, and was appointed a cardinal-bishop by the Holy Father. St. Bonaventure died while assisting at the Second Council of Lyons, which worked for the reunification of the Catholic Church with the Eastern Orthodox churches. His feast day is celebrated on July 15th.

Wednesday of the Fifteenth Week in Ordinary Time

Reading 1 Exodus 3:1-6, 9-12

Moses was tending the flock of his father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian.
Leading the flock across the desert, he came to Horeb,
the mountain of God.
There an angel of the LORD appeared to him in fire
flaming out of a bush.
As he looked on, he was surprised to see that the bush,
though on fire, was not consumed.
So Moses decided,
"I must go over to look at this remarkable sight,
and see why the bush is not burned."

When the LORD saw him coming over to look at it more closely,
God called out to him from the bush, "Moses! Moses!"
He answered, "Here I am."
God said, "Come no nearer!
Remove the sandals from your feet,
for the place where you stand is holy ground.
I am the God of your father," he continued,
"the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob.
The cry of the children of Israel has reached me,
and I have truly noted that the Egyptians are oppressing them.
Come, now! I will send you to Pharaoh to lead my people,
the children of Israel, out of Egypt."

But Moses said to God,
"Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh
and lead the children of Israel out of Egypt?"
He answered, "I will be with you;
and this shall be your proof that it is I who have sent you:
when you bring my people out of Egypt,
you will worship God on this very mountain."

Responsorial Psalm Psalm 103:1b-2, 3-4, 6-7

R. (8a) The Lord is kind and merciful.
Bless the LORD, O my soul;
and all my being, bless his holy name.
Bless the LORD, O my soul,
and forget not all his benefits.

R. The Lord is kind and merciful.
He pardons all your iniquities,
he heals all your ills.
He redeems your life from destruction,
he crowns you with kindness and compassion.

R. The Lord is kind and merciful.
The LORD secures justice
and the rights of all the oppressed.
He has made known his ways to Moses,
and his deeds to the children of Israel.

R. The Lord is kind and merciful.

Alleluia See Matthew 11:25

R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Blessed are you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth;
you have revealed to little ones the mysteries of the Kingdom.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel Matthew 11:25-27

At that time Jesus exclaimed:
"I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth,
for although you have hidden these things
from the wise and the learned
you have revealed them to the childlike.
Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will.
All things have been handed over to me by my Father.
No one knows the Son except the Father,
and no one knows the Father except the Son
and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him."

Daily Meditation: Exodus 3:1-6, 9-12

I will be with you. (Exodus 3:12)

Put yourself in Moses' sandals for a moment. Surely he had tended the sheep through all kinds of weather, over different terrains, and during various times and seasons. He knew the natural order of things, and in that natural order, a bush that is on fire will eventually burn out. Imagine his surprise, then, when he came upon a burning bush that was not burning up. Then imagine how much more surprised he must have been when he heard the very voice of God speaking from the midst of this bush!

It would be easy for us, as it was for Moses, to be in awe of this scene. If the story ended here, we would have more than enough evidence that God is a worker of miracles. But what God does next is even more miraculous.

Just as God revealed his presence and power through the burning bush, he promised that he would manifest his power even more so through Moses. He would use this man to deliver his message of liberation to the Israelite people, who were slaves in Egypt, and to the mighty Pharaoh himself. And if Pharaoh refused to let the people go, then the power of God would burn in and through Moses to change Pharaoh's mind. Moses himself would become a kind of burning-yet-not-consumed bush.

Moses was hesitant at first. He was insecure about his ability to speak publicly, and he protested that God must have chosen the wrong man. But God promised to be with him and to work through him. Eventually, Moses said yes, and the God of the universe, who can do anything he wants, began to work through this hesitant fugitive shepherd.

Surely our God is a worker of miracles. Not only does he have power over the created universe, but he also has the power to work in our hearts. It is one thing to set a bush on fire without destroying it, but it is another thing altogether to set a heart on fire with unyielding confidence in an unseen God. But that's exactly what the Lord did!

What would it look like for your heart to be set on fire? Greater joy? Confidence in hard situations? Perhaps an eagerness to share the good news? The possibilities are endless!

"Lord, come and set my heart on fire with love for you!"

Psalm 103:1-4, 6-7
Matthew 11:25-27

From today's Holy Gospel:

"I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth,
for although you have hidden these things
from the wise and the learned
you have revealed them to the childlike....." end quote.

***

Our Lord pics and chooses who He will reveal Himself to.
Funny thing is...He reveals Himself to almost anybody that reaches to Him in childlike humility. Why? How?

He reveals Himself to the childlike because He Himself is like that. In purity, in faith, in love of God. He reveals Himself in a very special place...the heart of the soul. This is where everything happens.
Everyone who is educated in the worldly things will fail to see Him. But those who are educated in the spiritual things will see Him in everything, in the world, in the people, nature, world events, everything will glorify the Lord.
And how is it that the Son of God reveals the Father?

I have mentioned that I have seen the Lord in an out of body experience. The strangest sensation....is that I was feeling the Love of the Father in that darkest moment I saw Him on the cross breathing His last. I have seen the Father's Love, I have seen then...the Father in that way. He died for me; I'll live for Him.
This sign is for the world ... the cross, the heart, the love, the surrender in totality to God's will. Such is the call. The call from His heart to your heart. Like as if God was calling back everything back to Himself on that cross. Because it all came out from Him.

Are you in?
