† "..Whoever Comes To Me Will Never....... "

Quote of the Day

"Nothing seems tiresome or painful when you are working for a Master who pays well; who rewards even a cup of cold water given for love of Him." — St. Dominic Savio

Today's Meditation

"Without doubt, Jesus Christ could have abolished pain at a single stroke, and, by virtue of the infinite grace of the Redemption, restored man to the state of complete, unmixed bliss that he enjoyed in the paradise of innocence. He did not so wish. He judged that, for some, suffering would be a source of merit, a gain, a source of glory, and a means of renewal and triumph; that, for the greater number, it would be a necessary expiation. He therefore maintained suffering, but purified, ennobled, and transfigured it by taking it upon Himself. He became the man of sorrows, virum dolorum, in the strict and absolute sense of these words." —Fr. Charles Arminjon, p. 276
An excerpt from The End of the Present World

Daily Verse

"For I am not ashamed of the gospel. It is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: for Jew first, and then Greek. For in it is revealed the righteousness of God from faith to faith; as it is written, "The one who is righteous by faith will live." — Romans 1:16-17

St. Francis De Laval

Saint Francis-Xavier de Montmorency-Laval (1623-1708) was one of eight children born to one of France's most illustrious families. He learned his piety from his mother, and like his namesake desired to become a priest and missionary. This dream was realized when he was appointed by Pope Alexander VII to be the first Apostolic Vicar of New France (Canada). His territory covered all of what is now Canada and the central section of what would become the United States, an enormous frontier which he undertook as a great spiritual work. He landed in Quebec in 1659 when the colonial population was just 500 people. He supported the missions, built a cathedral to the Immaculate Conception, taught devotion to Our Lady under this title, founded a seminary and an industrial school, and began the first Catholic school system in Canada. In all seasons he made long and perilous journeys by land and water to minister to his flock. When Quebec became a diocese he was consecrated as Canada's first bishop. He fought the sinister alcohol trade to the Indian tribes by having it outlawed within his territory and excommunicating those involved with it. He converted and baptized an Iroquois chief who then became a promoter of the Christian faith and won other converts among the local tribes. St. Francis de Laval was a man known for his great influence and holiness of life. His feast day is May 6th.

Tuesday of the Third Week of Easter

Reading I Acts 7:51—8:1a

Stephen said to the people, the elders, and the scribes:
"You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears,
you always oppose the Holy Spirit;
you are just like your ancestors.
Which of the prophets did your ancestors not persecute?
They put to death those who foretold the coming of the righteous one,
whose betrayers and murderers you have now become.
You received the law as transmitted by angels,
but you did not observe it."
When they heard this, they were infuriated,
and they ground their teeth at him.
But Stephen, filled with the Holy Spirit,
looked up intently to heaven and saw the glory of God
and Jesus standing at the right hand of God,
and Stephen said, "Behold, I see the heavens opened
and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God."
But they cried out in a loud voice,
covered their ears, and rushed upon him together.
They threw him out of the city, and began to stone him.
The witnesses laid down their cloaks
at the feet of a young man named Saul.
As they were stoning Stephen, he called out,
"Lord Jesus, receive my spirit."
Then he fell to his knees and cried out in a loud voice,
"Lord, do not hold this sin against them";
and when he said this, he fell asleep.
Now Saul was consenting to his execution.

Responsorial Psalm Psalm 31:3cd-4, 6 and 7b and 8a, 17 and 21ab

R. (6a) Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit.

R. Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit.
or:

Into your hands I commend my spirit;
you will redeem me, O LORD, O faithful God.
My trust is in the LORD;
I will rejoice and be glad of your mercy.

R. Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit.
or:

Let your face shine upon your servant;

Gospel John 6:30-35

The crowd said to Jesus:
"What sign can you do, that we may see and believe in you?
What can you do?
Our ancestors ate manna in the desert, as it is written:
He gave them bread from heaven to eat."
So Jesus said to them,
"Amen, amen, I say to you,
it was not Moses who gave the bread from heaven;
my Father gives you the true bread from heaven.
For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven
and gives life to the world."
So they said to Jesus,
"Sir, give us this bread always."
Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life;
whoever comes to me will never hunger,
and whoever believes in me will never thirst."

Daily Meditation: John 6:30-35

I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger. (John 6:35)

Jesus is making a bold claim in today's Gospel. He is saying that he is the "true bread" of God that came down from heaven, greater even than God's gift of manna in the desert (John 6:32-33). He proclaims that he is the "bread of life" and will later say that we need to eat his body and drink his blood if we want to receive eternal life (6:35, 51-58). This is more than symbolic language; Jesus is truly present in the Eucharist!

We hear these truths so often that we can lose sight of their meaning. So listen to what a man from a different faith tradition once said: "If I believed that thing that looks like a little round piece of bread was really God himself, I think I would just faint. I would fall at his feet like a dead man." Similarly, full of awe and wonder, St. Clare exclaimed, "What a marvel! What a joy! What a love! The Lord of the universe, the Lord of the angels, is here, offering himself to me under the appearance of bread."

These examples reveal, in a dramatic way, the truths that Jesus declares today: that he is the Bread of Life. That in him we will never hunger or thirst. That he comes to dwell within us through his Body and Blood. That in him, we receive all the grace that we need. That his presence is the greatest gift that we can receive. Yet if we rely only on our senses, we see only bread and wine. Our awareness of Jesus in the Eucharist can grow dull. That's why Jesus offers countless ways to experience his presence more deeply.

For example, you might stay after Mass on Sunday to thank God for the gift of his Son whom you just received in Communion. You could attend daily Mass to receive Jesus more frequently. You might spend time in Eucharistic Adoration. Or you might read the sixth chapter of John's Gospel and ponder the mystery of Jesus' gift of his Body and Blood. Whatever you do, know that Jesus delights in encountering you!

Today, the Lord is inviting you to rediscover him as the Bread of Life. Let him fill you with the awe and wonder that St. Clare knew. Let him convince you that he can satisfy your deepest hunger!

"Jesus, I am amazed that you want to come to me through the humble but powerful gift of your own Body and Blood!"

Acts 7:51–8:1
Psalm 31:3-4, 6-8, 17, 21

From today's Holy Gospel:

In the Gospel we hear today:
"So Jesus said to them,
"Amen, amen, I say to you,
it was not Moses who gave the bread from heaven;
my Father gives you the true bread from heaven.
For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven
and gives life to the world."
So they said to Jesus,
"Sir, give us this bread always."
Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life;
whoever comes to me will never hunger,
and whoever believes in me will never thirst........" - Word of the Lord!

From Roberto Juarez:
"By saying, "I am the bread of life," Jesus identifies himself not only as a source of sustenance, but as the one who quenches the deepest hunger and thirst of the human heart: the desire for love, for truth, for meaning, for eternity.
What am I hungry for in my life? Many times we seek to satiate the soul with passing things: recognition, pleasure, power, success... and even so, we are still hungry. Jesus offers himself as food that remains, that gives strength to live and hope for the heart.
"He who comes to me will not hunger": this is an invitation to draw near to him, to trust, to receive him especially in the Eucharist, where he is given to us as living bread come down from heaven. But it is also a call to nourish our relationship with Him each day, with prayer, listening, and surrender
What kind of "bread" do I look for in my life? Do I recognize Jesus as the only one capable of satisfying my heart? How am I living my relationship with the Eucharist, the true Bread of Life?
Lord Jesus,
you are the Bread of Life that comes down from heaven.
Feed my heart,
quench my thirst for truth and love,
And teach me to seek you not for what you give me,
but because of who you are:
my God, my life, my everything.
Amen..... " End quote.

From brother Adrian:
"True Bread From Heaven" says our Lord. It has always been provided by "our Father".

Our Lord said that He is the bread, and that we must eat His bread.
Our Lord desires an everlasting communion between us, between Heaven and Earth.
I go to daily Mass, I tell all, because I KNOW our Lord is coming in the most special and humble ways from Heaven, daily.
Sometimes I feel I don't deserve to receive, but I go still, because I believe.
I believe He will make me holy. I believe this is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
I want to be accustomed on earth, as it is in Heaven, to dine with Him daily, to commune with Him, to bond with Him, to let Him know, I will not leave Him alone either.

Lord give us this bread, this day, forever, this love from Heaven!
