† "He Opened Their Minds.. "

Quote of the Day

"The last degree of love is when He gave Himself to us to be our Food; because He gave Himself to be united with us in every way." St. Bernardine of Siena

Today's Meditation

"Jesus has many lovers of His heavenly kingdom, but few cross-bearers. Many desire His consolation, but few His tribulation. Many will sit down with Him at table, but few will share His fast. All desire to rejoice with Him, but few will suffer for Him. Many will follow Him to the breaking of the bread, but few will drink the bitter cup of His Passion. Many revere His miracles, but few follow the shame of His cross. Many love Jesus when all goes well with them, and praise Him when He does them a favor; but if Jesus conceals Himself and leaves them for a little while, they fall to complaining or become depressed. They who love Jesus purely for Himself and not for their own sake bless Him in all trouble and anguish as well as in time of consolation. Even if He never sent them consolation, they would still praise Him and give thanks. Oh how powerful is the pure love of Jesus, when not mixed with self-interest or self-love!"
—Thomas à Kempis, p. 88-89

Daily Verse

"My son, if you receive my words and treasure up my commandments with you, making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding; yes, if you cry out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures; then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God." Proverbs 2:1-5

St. Fidelis Of Sigmaringen

St. Fidelis of Sigmaringen (1577-1622) was born with the name Mark Rey in what is today Germany. He studied and taught law and became known for his charity, austerities, and great devotion to God. He gained a reputation for being "the poor man's lawyer" because of his concern for the helpless. He eventually left his profession to become a Capuchin Franciscan friar and priest, taking the religious name "Fidelis," meaning "faithful." His work as a friar was fraught with danger. He lived during the Counter-Reformation, a time of great religious, cultural, and political upheaval in Western Europe. He zealously defended the teaching of the Catholic Church against the Protestant heretics. He wrote many pamphlets against Calvinism and Zwinglianism, and even traveled to Switzerland to preach against the Calvinists both in the pulpits and the public square. His untiring efforts to bring souls back to the Church was so successful that he became a threat to the heretic preachers. One day his preaching provoked a mob that confronted him and demanded he renounce his Catholic faith upon pain of death. He replied, "I came to extirpate heresy, not to embrace it," after which he was bludgeoned to death. Many miracles led to his canonization in the following century. St. Fidelis' feast day is April 24.

Thursday in the Octave of Easter

Reading 1 Acts 3:11-26

As the crippled man who had been cured clung to Peter and John,
all the people hurried in amazement toward them
in the portico called "Solomon's Portico."
When Peter saw this, he addressed the people,
"You children of Israel, why are you amazed at this,
and why do you look so intently at us
as if we had made him walk by our own power or piety?
The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob,
the God of our fathers, has glorified his servant Jesus
whom you handed over and denied in Pilate's presence,
when he had decided to release him.
You denied the Holy and Righteous One
and asked that a murderer be released to you.
The author of life you put to death,
but God raised him from the dead; of this we are witnesses.
And by faith in his name,
this man, whom you see and know, his name has made strong,
and the faith that comes through it
has given him this perfect health,
in the presence of all of you.
Now I know, brothers and sisters,
that you acted out of ignorance, just as your leaders did;
but God has thus brought to fulfillment
what he had announced beforehand
through the mouth of all the prophets,
that his Christ would suffer.
Repent, therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be wiped away,
and that the Lord may grant you times of refreshment
and send you the Christ already appointed for you, Jesus,
whom heaven must receive until the times of universal restoration
of which God spoke through the mouth
of his holy prophets from of old.
For Moses said:

A prophet like me will the Lord, your God, raise up for you
from among your own kin;
to him you shall listen in all that he may say to you.
Everyone who does not listen to that prophet
will be cut off from the people.

"Moreover, all the prophets who spoke,
from Samuel and those afterwards, also announced these days.
You are the children of the prophets
and of the covenant that God made with your ancestors
when he said to Abraham,
In your offspring all the families of the earth shall be blessed.
For you first, God raised up his servant and sent him to bless you
by turning each of you from your evil ways."

Responsorial Psalm Psalm 8:2ab and 5, 6-7, 8-9

R.(2ab) O Lord, our God, how wonderful your name in all the earth!
or:
R. Alleluia.
O LORD, our Lord,
how glorious is your name over all the earth!
What is man that you should be mindful of him,
or the son of man that you should care for him?
R. O Lord, our God, how wonderful your name in all the earth!
or:
R. Alleluia.
You have made him little less than the angels,
and crowned him with glory and honor.
You have given him rule over the works of your hands,
putting all things under his feet.

R. O Lord, our God, how wonderful your name in all the earth!
or:
R. Alleluia.
All sheep and oxen,
yes, and the beasts of the field,
The birds of the air, the fishes of the sea,
and whatever swims the paths of the seas.
R. O Lord, our God, how wonderful your name in all the earth!
or:
R. Alleluia.

Sequence -- optional Victimae paschali laudes
Christians, to the Paschal Victim

Offer your thankful praises!
A Lamb the sheep redeems;

Christ, who only is sinless,

Reconciles sinners to the Father.
Death and life have contended in that combat stupendous:

The Prince of life, who died, reigns immortal.
Speak, Mary, declaring

What you saw, wayfaring.
"The tomb of Christ, who is living,

The glory of Jesus' resurrection;
bright angels attesting,

The shroud and napkin resting.
Yes, Christ my hope is arisen;

to Galilee he goes before you."
Christ indeed from death is risen, our new life obtaining.

Have mercy, victor King, ever reigning!

Amen. Alleluia.

Alleluia Psalm 118:24
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
This is the day the LORD has made;
let us be glad and rejoice in it.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel Luke 24:35-48

The disciples of Jesus recounted what had taken place along the way,
and how they had come to recognize him in the breaking of bread.

While they were still speaking about this,
he stood in their midst and said to them,
"Peace be with you."
But they were startled and terrified
and thought that they were seeing a ghost.
Then he said to them, "Why are you troubled?
And why do questions arise in your hearts?
Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself.
Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones
as you can see I have."
And as he said this,
he showed them his hands and his feet.
While they were still incredulous for joy and were amazed,
he asked them, "Have you anything here to eat?"
They gave him a piece of baked fish;
he took it and ate it in front of them.

He said to them,
"These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you,
that everything written about me in the law of Moses
and in the prophets and psalms must be fulfilled."
Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.
And he said to them,
"Thus it is written that the Christ would suffer
and rise from the dead on the third day
and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins,
would be preached in his name
to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
You are witnesses of these things."

Daily Meditation: Luke 24:35-48

He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. (Luke 24:45)

This is the third of three events that Luke describes surrounding the resurrection of Jesus—and they all happen in rapid succession!

First, there are the women who "remembered [Jesus'] words" after they find his empty tomb (Luke 24:8). Next, two disciples traveling to Emmaus meet an unrecognizable risen Jesus, who opens the Scriptures to them and explains how they foresaw his death and resurrection (24:32). And then, in today's Gospel, Jesus appears to his apostles and opens their minds "to understand the Scriptures" (24:45).

No doubt, seeing the risen Jesus was amazing! But Jesus wanted to do more than amaze his disciples. He wanted to show them the meaning of his resurrection. He wanted to connect the dots for them so that they could see God's marvelous plan unfolding over time. And he wanted to do it through the Holy Spirit. It was the Spirit who set the hearts of the Emmaus disciples "burning" within them as Jesus spoke (Luke 24:32). It was the Spirit who filled the women and the apostles with a sense of joy as they digested the good news. And it's the Spirit who can open our minds and fill our hearts as well.

The Holy Spirit can be our companion every time we open a Bible or listen to the readings at Mass. As he did for the first believers, he can open up the meaning of Jesus' resurrection for us. He can tell us how Jesus has freed us from sin and death. He can fill us with the joy of our redemption. And he can set our hearts aflame with a desire to share the good news with our loved ones.

So turn to the Spirit as you ponder today's Mass readings. Ask him to take the words printed in the Bible and make them come alive for you. If you are feeling lost and alone, let him convince you of his unconditional love. If you are struggling with temptation, let him give you confidence and courage. If you are burdened with guilt, let the good news of Jesus' never-ending mercy set you free.

Jesus truly is risen! He can open your mind. He can open your heart. Let his Spirit in!

"Holy Spirit, breathe your life and love into me as I meditate on your word!"

Reflections with Brother Adrian:

2cents2

Hear AI Read it for u

From today's Holy Gospel:

In the Gospel we hear today:
"Then he said to them, "Why are you troubled?
And why do questions arise in your hearts?
Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself.
Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones
as you can see I have."
And as he said this,
he showed them his hands and his feet.
While they were still incredulous for joy and were amazed,
he asked them, "Have you anything here to eat?"
They gave him a piece of baked fish;
he took it and ate it in front of them......" - Word of the Lord!

From Roberto Juarez:
"The gospel ends with a clear call: "You are witnesses of this." It is not enough to experience the Lord, it is necessary to proclaim him. Each one of us is called to witness the resurrection with our lives: with joy, with hope, with mercy.
• Where is the risen Lord speaking to me today?
• What fears do you need to calm in my heart?
• Am I willing to be His witness with my life?
Lord Jesus, risen and alive, enter my life as you entered that locked room. Touch my fears, strengthen my faith, and make me a witness of your love. Like the disciples, may I also proclaim with joy: I have seen the Lord! Amen.
.... " End quote.

From brother Adrian:

"The disciples of Jesus recounted what had taken place along the way, and how they had come to recognize him in the breaking of bread."
And then...He appeared. And they were shocked and amazed, some even afraid. Who does that? Who just appears out of nowhere? And then, He eats with them to prove He is not a ghost.
He has to calm them down. He has to show them the wounds, the scars, the truth, that He is...the Resurrection, the hope, and the life to come.

Does our Lord appear like that anymore? Yes, but rarely in this exact manner. He appears in so many more manners. And to who? Mostly to the saints over the last few generations.

And we are due for more saints folks.

You may ask "who, me?"
Yes, you! Why not you?

People love to say "I'm no saint!" or "I am not perfect!" but that sounds like an excuse to continue being a shameless sinner. God calls us to be perfect, He knows we are not! God calls us to be what we are designed to be...holy, yes, and saints. And they say saints have appeared to people. Exactly what Jesus did, appear after death, because...the resurrection makes life forever a reality that boggles all human reasoning.

Lord, help us live the life You want. That You might live and reign both now and forever!
