Saint Quote:

“Occupy your mind with good thoughts, or the enemy will fill them with bad ones. Unoccupied, they cannot be.” -St. Thomas More

Today’s Meditation

"A man must go through a long and great conflict in himself before he can learn fully to overcome himself, and to draw his whole affection towards God. When a man stands upon himself he is easily drawn aside after human comforts. But a true lover of Christ, and a diligent pursuer of virtue, does not hunt after comforts, nor seek such sensible sweetnesses, but is rather willing to bear strong trials and hard labors for Christ." —Thomas a' Kempis, p. 64

Blessed Imelda Lambertini

Bl. Imelda Lambertini (1322–1333) was born to a noble and devout family in Bologna, Italy. As a child she developed a great love for prayer, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, and the Holy Eucharist. She spent much of her time in the Dominican monastery praying with the nuns, and at nine years of age requested to enter there as a postulant. Her parents and the nuns allowed her to enter, however, in that era children her age were not permitted to receive Holy Communion. Imelda repeatedly pleaded to receive Communion, but each time she was denied. Nevertheless, she developed a close relationship with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. When the feast of the Ascension approached, Imelda begged to make her First Holy Communion on this feast. Again, she was denied. On the Vigil of the Feast of the Ascension she was in the chapel praying, as usual, as the other Sisters received Holy Communion. Afterwards a glowing host was seen suspended in the air above the child. The priest understood this as a sign that the child should be permitted to receive, and he ministered the Holy Eucharist to her. Imelda remained kneeling in prayer in thanksgiving as the nuns left the chapel. When they returned for her, they found her just as they had left her, but her body was lifeless. It was understood that Imelda died of pure ecstatic joy after receiving Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, as she had so ardently desired. Bl. Imelda Lambertini is the patron saint of First Communicants. Her feast day is May 12th.

Lectionary: 292

Reading 1

Acts 16:22-34

The crowd in Philippi joined in the attack on Paul and Silas,

and the magistrates had them stripped

and ordered them to be beaten with rods.

After inflicting many blows on them,

they threw them into prison

and instructed the jailer to guard them securely.

When he received these instructions, he put them in the innermost cell

and secured their feet to a stake.

About midnight, while Paul and Silas were praying

and singing hymns to God as the prisoners listened,

there was suddenly such a severe earthquake

that the foundations of the jail shook;

all the doors flew open, and the chains of all were pulled loose.

When the jailer woke up and saw the prison doors wide open,

he drew his sword and was about to kill himself,

thinking that the prisoners had escaped.

But Paul shouted out in a loud voice,

"Do no harm to yourself; we are all here."

He asked for a light and rushed in and,

trembling with fear, he fell down before Paul and Silas.

Then he brought them out and said,

"Sirs, what must I do to be saved?"

And they said, "Believe in the Lord Jesus

and you and your household will be saved."

So they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to everyone in his house.

He took them in at that hour of the night and bathed their wounds;

then he and all his family were baptized at once.

He brought them up into his house and provided a meal

and with his household rejoiced at having come to faith in God.

Gospel

John 16:5-11

Jesus said to his disciples:

"Now I am going to the one who sent me,

and not one of you asks me, 'Where are you going?'

But because I told you this, grief has filled your hearts.

But I tell you the truth, it is better for you that I go.

For if I do not go, the Advocate will not come to you.

But if I go, I will send him to you.

And when he comes he will convict the world

in regard to sin and righteousness and condemnation:

sin, because they do not believe in me;

righteousness, because I am going to the Father

and you will no longer see me;

condemnation, because the ruler of this world has been condemned."

Daily Meditation: Acts 16:22-34

While Paul and Silas were praying and singing . . . (Acts 16:25)

After months of battling cancer, Helen entered hospice care. While it was hard for her daughter, Pam, to watch her mom fade, she was deeply moved by Helen’s courage, her peace, and her faith. Her mom never complained about her pain or allowed herself to be consumed with regret. Instead, she held tight to her rosary and told Pam and her siblings that she was ready to go to the Lord. Pam had always taken her mother’s faith for granted, but seeing her pass so peacefully moved Pam to go back to church and explore her own faith more deeply.

The witness of Helen’s faith is similar to the witness that we see in Paul and Silas in today’s first reading. After having been severely beaten and thrown into jail, these two apostles spent the night praying “as the prisoners listened” (Acts 16:25).

Note that this happened “about midnight,” when prisoners would normally be trying to sleep (Acts 16:25). But here were these prisoners, listening attentively and eagerly drinking in the witness of faith that the pair revealed. You can imagine them thinking, “What would inspire such a joyful response from two men who have been treated so harshly?” They were so impressed that even after an earthquake opened the prison doors, the inmates chose to gather around the two men instead of trying to make a break for it and run to freedom.

Both Helen’s story and today’s reading show us that suffering can be redeemed, even in the hardest of times. It can become fertile ground where virtues like patience, hope, and even joy can grow. If we try to stay close to the Lord during these times, our sufferings won’t just strengthen our own faith; they’ll also draw other people to deepen their relationship with the Lord.

This is easier said than done, but every time we take just one step closer to Jesus in the midst of hardships, he takes a thousand steps closer to us. He not only comforts and strengthens us, but he finds a way to bring good from it. So never doubt the goodness of the Lord, even in the hardest times!

“Jesus, reach out to all who are suffering right now. Help them and their loved ones to find you today.”

Psalm 138:1-3, 7-8

From today's Holy Gospel:

But if I go, I will send him to you. .. ”

From Roberto Juarez:

"Without the Spirit, faith grows cold, the Gospel becomes theory, and the heart is hardened. With the Spirit we discover the truth, we find strength, we learn to live as disciples.
Today the Lord invites us to open ourselves to the action of the Holy Spirit, to allow ourselves to be enlightened, to allow ourselves to be corrected, to allow ourselves to be transformed.
Let us ask that the Spirit will help us to recognize what distances us from God, to strengthen our faith, and to make us live with hope. Because Christ has not left us alone. His presence continues to live in our midst through the Holy Spirit. And that Spirit continues to be at work today, guiding the Church and renewing our hearts." end quote.

Or Lord speaks...and was it in the 3rd person?
"But if I go, I will send him to you."
The Advocate.
Yes, the Lord literally speaks in and through the 3rd person of the Holy Spirit of God.
Father Creator. Jesus Sacred Flesh and our source for God. Holy Spirit, the very GOODNESS of God at work through us all.

In your daily life...how do you communicate? In the next realms, in the realities we do not see, they do not speak through human vocal cords, nor human ears like we creatures do on earth. No. But they can speak through spirits. Now, which spirit would you care to listen to?

How about tuning out the bad spirits, and only tune into the HOLY SPIRIT!

Invite Him in your daily life. He speaks in the consciousness, He speaks in the heart, He speaks also, through people, if you are tuning into the goodness of God. The Holy Spirit speaks in truth. Many times in the truth we do not want to hear. And so, today, our Lord says the Holy Spirit will come. Jesus is sending the Holy Spirit. That which we get baptized in the Holy Sacrament of Confirmation. The baptism of fire. The baptism that burns. The baptism that yearns to set the world on fire. I am amazed at how few have a burning heart. It is much of the reason which I am in the vineyard doing the works of the Lord. A heart for a heart. A heart open to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. That heart that shows the thorns, the blood, the cross, the very passion of our Lord, to suffer with us and through us...for the very Holy will of God our Father.

Saint Quote:

“At the end of our life we shall be judged by charity.” -St. John of the Cross

Today’s Meditation

"Prayer brings our mind into the brightness of divine light, and exposes our will to the warmth of divine love. Nothing else can so purge our mind from its ignorance, and our will from its depraved affections. It is a blessed fountain which, as it flows, revives our good desires and causes them to bring forth fruit, washes away the stains of infirmity from our soul, and calms the passions of our hearts." —St. Francis de Sales, p. 61

Daily Verse

I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body but after that can do no more. I shall show you whom to fear. Be afraid of the one who after killing has the power to cast into Gehenna; yes, I tell you, be afraid of that one. -Luke 12:4-5

St Francis Of Girolamo

St. Francis de Girolamo (1642-1716) was the eldest of eleven children born to honorable and virtuous parents in Naples, Italy. As a child he was drawn to God and a life of prayer. Realizing his vocation to Holy Orders, he was ordained a Jesuit priest at the age of 28. He became a renowned public preacher due to his distinguished and eloquent voice. He was described as "a lamb when he talks, and a lion when he preaches." He had a heart for the missions after his patron St. Francis Xavier, but instead of traveling to distant lands he accepted his hometown of Naples as his India. He went as a missionary priest into country towns and villages for open-air preaching in the streets. He sought to convert sinners wherever they were—in brothels, prisons, galleys, hospitals, and asylums—as well as instructing the pious in their religious houses. He converted Muslim prisoners of war to the Christian faith, rescued chidren from dangerous and degrading situations, and opened a pawn shop for charity. The fruit of his labor was abundant. He converted many souls, even hardened sinners, and made them virtuous. Everyone knew him for his holiness and zeal. He also had a reputation for being a miracle worker during his lifetime and after his death. After spending 40 years in apostolic labor in Naples, he died of an illness from which he suffered greatly without complaint. His feast day is May 11th.

Lectionary: 291

Reading 1

Acts 16:11-15

We set sail from Troas, making a straight run for Samothrace,

and on the next day to Neapolis, and from there to Philippi,

a leading city in that district of Macedonia and a Roman colony.

We spent some time in that city.

On the sabbath we went outside the city gate along the river

where we thought there would be a place of prayer.

We sat and spoke with the women who had gathered there.

One of them, a woman named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth,

from the city of Thyatira, a worshiper of God, listened,

and the Lord opened her heart to pay attention

to what Paul was saying.

After she and her household had been baptized,

she offered us an invitation,

"If you consider me a believer in the Lord,

come and stay at my home," and she prevailed on us.

John 15:26—16:4a

Jesus said to his disciples:

"When the Advocate comes whom I will send you from the Father,

the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father,

he will testify to me.

And you also testify,

because you have been with me from the beginning.

"I have told you this so that you may not fall away.

They will expel you from the synagogues;

in fact, the hour is coming when everyone who kills you

Daily Meditation: John 15:26–16:4

The Spirit of truth . . . will testify to me. (John 15:26)

Jesus knew what the disciples would face after his departure: expulsion from synagogues, persecution, even death (John 16:2). He also knew how little of what he taught them had sunk in. And so, on his last night with them, in order that they would not “fall away” (16:1), he promised that he would send them the “Spirit of truth” to “testify” to him (15:26). He knew that they needed the Spirit to continue to remind them of his love and to reveal to them more and more who he is and what it means to be a member of his kingdom.

And look what happened when the Spirit came! Wavering men and women became unshakably convinced that Jesus was the Messiah—and they boldly preached that message. Homegrown fishermen traveled to distant lands to proclaim the truths of Christ that would change millions of lives. They wrote Gospels and letters that instructed new believers in the faith—words that touch our lives even today. All because of the Spirit of truth!

This is the same Holy Spirit that you received in Baptism. This Spirit will continue to reveal Christ to us, just as he did for the disciples. He will continue to “testify” to his love through the Scriptures, the teachings of the Church, and his quiet voice in our hearts. He will lead us into all truth (John 16:13), opening up our understanding of who Jesus is and helping us discern his plan for our lives.

So ask the Holy Spirit to testify to Jesus in your heart today. Take today’s Scripture passages to prayer and expect him to reveal something about Jesus to you. Turn to him during your day, and ask for his guidance to help you follow Jesus better. Bring him your concerns, and know that you can rely on him to be your guiding light when you are confused or when, like the apostles, you face challenges. Keep your heart open to him and his words, confident that he can help you and strengthen you so that you don’t “fall away” into fear or sin or selfishness (John 16:1).

Because the Spirit of truth will testify to Jesus.

“Holy Spirit, help me to hear your testimony about Jesus today!”

Acts 16:11-15
Psalm 149:1-6, 9

From Bishop Barron:

"The “world” is that collectivity of persons, institutions, armies, and nations predicated upon the loss of friendship with God. That network will hate the followers of Jesus because it cannot frighten them, and its success depends upon fear.

Jesus is about to be swallowed up by the forces of the world, but he is not held captive or entranced by them, because he does not live in himself—and hence in fear—but rather in the Father, the power that conquers the world.

What Jesus wants his followers to experience is that same freedom and insouciance, but it is participation in the coinherent dynamics of God’s being—the insertion into the loop of grace that God is—that makes such liberating detachment possible. " end quote.

From Roberto Juarez:

"Today the Lord invites us to two very concrete things: to allow ourselves to be sustained by the Holy Spirit and to live as courageous witnesses of the Gospel.
Let us pray that the Spirit of truth will strengthen our faith, that we may not be afraid to live as Christians, and that our lives may bear witness to Jesus of Nazareth. And when difficulties come,
doubts or tiredness, let's remember that we do not walk alone. The Holy Spirit continues to act, continues to sustain the Church, and continues to make it possible for Christ to be proclaimed to the world." end quote.

Have you experienced rejection on account of your faith? If not, then why?

We all love sweet effects and no stress, right? But what about the moment you are put on stand? What about the moment of truth? What about the moments in your life, nobody else can see? What about the moment of sacrifice? When you think to yourself "this is going to hurt me...to help them...but here it goes anyway", and you move in the name of Love...the name of God!
These moments of grace and love are needed....they could be fueling Heaven, or Heaven needs to fuel us with grace and mercy in these moments! I encourage you. This is a sign of the Holy Spirit at work. Our Lord is encouraging us...and we are to encourage one another, as a clear sign of the Holy Spirit at work.

We are fast approaching the moment of the Paraclete, the encouragement, the very love of God that comes to consume us as a fire...the Holy Spirit. Let us be the kindle that needs Him to burn and yearn...to do God's Holy Will.
