clickable | | Reflecting God's Love The deeper my love the more particular it becomes and the more limited in scope. It is only through such particulars that we can come to save the creation. God may love the world, but we live into God's image by reflecting such love on a proper scale— among particular places and people. We live into our love when we love our neighbors and, thus necessarily, our neighborhood. —from the book Wendell Berry and the Given Life by Ragan Sutterfield | MorningOffering.com | † Saint Quote "The Holy Bible is like a mirror before our mind's eye. In it we see our inner face. From the Scriptures we can learn our spiritual deformities and beauties. And there too we discover the progress we are making and how far we are from perfection." — Pope St. Gregory the Great † MEDITATION OF THE DAY "Just as God's creature, the sun, is one and the same the world over, so also does the Church's preaching shine everywhere to enlighten all men who want to come to a knowledge of the truth. Now of those who speak with authority in the churches, no preacher however forceful will utter anything different—for no one is above the Master—nor will a less forceful preacher diminish what has been handed down. Since our faith is everywhere the same, no one who can say more augments it, nor can anyone who says less diminish it." — St. Ignatius of Antioch, p. 194 AN EXCERPT FROM Witness of the Saints † VERSE OF THE DAY "Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, will be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven." During this month the faithful venerate the Blessed Virgin Mary especially under her title of Our Lady of the Rosary, and make special effort to honor the Holy Rosary with group recitations and rosary processions. St. Dominic de Guzman, the founder of the Order of Preachers, is the saint to whom Our Lady famously appeared and gave the prayers of the Holy Rosary to assist him as a spiritual weapon in combating heresy and leading souls back to the one, true Catholic faith. He was known for his preaching, healing, exorcisms, and his appearance was said to have closely matched that of Jesus'. He is the patron of impossible causes, desperate situations, and hospitals. He also wrote the book of the Bible that bears his name. St. Simon the Zealot (1st c.) was also one of Jesus' Twelve Apostles, but one of the most obscure. He earned his name for being zealous for the honor of Jesus, showing a holy indignation towards those who claimed Christ with their lips while dishonoring him with their manner of life. After the Ascension of Jesus, towards the end of his life, it is believed that St. Simon joined St. Jude to preach the Gospel in Persia, where they were both martyred in 65 A.D. St. Simon the Zealot and St. Jude Thaddeus share a feast day on October 28th. | Feast of Saints Simon and Jude, Apostles Lectionary: 666 Reading 1 Eph 2:19-22 Brothers and sisters: You are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the holy ones and members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the Apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the capstone. Through him the whole structure is held together and grows into a temple sacred in the Lord; in him you also are being built together into a dwelling place of God in the Spirit. Responsorial Psalm Ps 19:2-3, 4-5 R.(5a) Their message goes out through all the earth. The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament proclaims his handiwork. Day pours out the word to day, and night to night imparts knowledge. R.Their message goes out through all the earth. Not a word nor a discourse whose voice is not heard; Through all the earth their voice resounds, and to the ends of the world, their message. R.Their message goes out through all the earth. Alleluia See Te Deum R. Alleluia, alleluia. We praise you, O God, we acclaim you as Lord; the glorious company of Apostles praise you. R. Alleluia, alleluia. Gospel Lk 6:12-16 Jesus went up to the mountain to pray, and he spent the night in prayer to God. When day came, he called his disciples to himself, and from them he chose Twelve, whom he also named Apostles: Simon, whom he named Peter, and his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called a Zealot, and Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor. | Catholic Meditations Meditation: Ephesians 2:19-22 Saint Simon and Saint Jude, Apostles (Feast) You are fellow citizens with the holy ones. (Ephesians 2:19) Although Paul is referring to the Gentiles in today's first reading, you could certainly call Simon and Jude "fellow citizens" of God's household (Ephesians 2:19). After all, these two men, whose feast we celebrate today, were among the twelve apostles. You can't get more "citizenly" than that! But the divisions that existed among the Jews and Gentiles could have applied to these saints too. Why? Because Jesus chose them, along with the rest of the Twelve, from a variety of backgrounds: Matthew, a tax collector; Simon, a Zealot who hated tax collectors; some fishermen; and others with their own personalities we don't know much about. You would be hard-pressed to find a more unlikely group! But as they followed Jesus, their love for him—and his love for them—brought them together. We don't have to look far today to see the way differences can cause division. On a broad scale, we see nations torn apart by war and political polarization. On a much smaller scale, we see friends and family members whose relationships are strained or broken. We even see divisions in our Church and parishes, despite the fact that we have all been baptized in Christ and are all "members of the household of God" (Ephesians 2:19). The answer to divisions, whether big or small, is Jesus. It's simple but true. If his love can break down the barrier between Jews and Gentiles, between a tax collector and a Zealot, it can do the same for us today. Do you sense a barrier or some tension with someone in your parish who is very different from you? Commit it to Jesus. He can open your heart and help you to recognize that person's inherent goodness and value. He may even show you whether you are being judgmental or envious, or prompt you to change your tone of voice when speaking to that person. God doesn't expect us to be best friends with every Christian we encounter. But he does want us to recognize each one as a brother or sister in Christ. The Church is made up of many varied members. But it's together as one that we, the body of Christ, give witness to the world about who Jesus is. "Sts. Simon and Jude, help me to be an instrument of reconciliation." Psalm 19:2-5 Luke 6:12-16 | clickable | Authenticity coincides with sanctity. The saint alone is fully real, honest, faithful, loving, genuine. He alone is immersed in beauty, truth, ecstasy. The classical, theological way of thinking about authenticity was to think of virtue, especially heroic virtue. —Fr. Imagine 12 columns standing, what can hold them together aside from the ground? Alone they are wobbly, but whence a capstone is place on top, all are stable. Their message goes out through all the earth." When the apostles spoke, their word went forth from Christ. They speak about a judge in Heaven. Revelation 19:11 "[ The Coming of Christ ] And I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and He who sat on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and wages war." War has been waged on the enemy. He judges justly with righteousness. And so it is with the judges in Heaven, the apostles who are cast out into our realms. How? Look no further for St. Jude or Saint Simon, they very well could be descendants onto your current CATHOLIC bishop! Watch their pastoral plan in your diocese. Learn what it is they want. They are often about setting foundations, and about buildings, ultimately, building up the body of Christ! If you look around, people are always tearing down and building up always in construction. House renovations. What about your Spirit? Our current Diocesan plan is to focus on the youth and nurturing families. That's half the plan. I'd call it most of the battle. Because the evil one is out there nonstop destroying virtues and families. So, it is a rather daunting task. Isn't it? How do we build up the Body of Christ? Certainly by building each other up, lifting each other up in prayer and praises and correction when need be, all in the name of charity, a true love of God. I always hope to build you up. I want to raise you up. I'm attempting to pray a novena for Holy Souls in Purgatory. The end of the prayer asks them to pray for me, who could be damned one day. In the same humble Spirit, I raise you up in my prayers, in hopes that one day you will raise me up to Heaven. May God bless you in all your efforts. May our Lord always have His Holy Angels helping you on your journey. May you be found to be a true and faithful servant, with no duplicity, a joy to the Sacred Heart of our precious Lord and our Body. | "Jesus went up to the mountain to pray, and he spent the night in prayer to God."
