Unafraid of Ridicule

We must be unafraid of ridicule or human respect, unafraid to walk out alone, knowing that we are nothing and can do nothing on our own. But with God's grace and God's power, you can do all things.

✞MEDITATION OF THE DAY✞

"If you are able to fast, you will do well to observe some abstinence beyond what is enjoined by the Church. For in addition to the ordinary benefits of fasting—namely, lifting up the mind, subduing the flesh, strengthening virtue, and earning an eternal recompense—it is a great matter to be able to command our tastes and inclinations, and to keep the body and its appetites subject to the law of the spirit. And even if we do not fast to any great extent, Satan is the more afraid of those who, he is aware, know how to fast."
— St. Francis de Sales, p. 144-5

Saints Timothy And Titus

January 26. Saint Timothy and Titus were trusted friends and co-workers with Saint Paul through many of his trials. He eventually set both up as heads of local Churches and encouraged them as would a father. Saint Paul seems to have truly relished their support and friendship.

Memorial of Saints Timothy and Titus, bishops

Reading I 2 Tm 1:1-8

Paul, an Apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God
for the promise of life in Christ Jesus,
to Timothy, my dear child:
grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father
and Christ Jesus our Lord.

I am grateful to God,
whom I worship with a clear conscience as my ancestors did,
as I remember you constantly in my prayers, night and day.
I yearn to see you again, recalling your tears,
so that I may be filled with joy,
as I recall your sincere faith
that first lived in your grandmother Lois
and in your mother Eunice
and that I am confident lives also in you.

For this reason, I remind you to stir into flame
the gift of God that you have through the imposition of my hands.
For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice
but rather of power and love and self-control.
So do not be ashamed of your testimony to our Lord,
nor of me, a prisoner for his sake;
but bear your share of hardship for the Gospel
with the strength that comes from God.

or
Ti 1:1-5

Paul, a slave of God and Apostle of Jesus Christ
for the sake of the faith of God's chosen ones
and the recognition of religious truth,
in the hope of eternal life
that God, who does not lie, promised before time began,
who indeed at the proper time revealed his word
in the proclamation with which I was entrusted
by the command of God our savior,
to Titus, my true child in our common faith:
grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our savior.

For this reason I left you in Crete
so that you might set right what remains to be done
and appoint presbyters in every town, as I directed you.

Responsorial Psalm Ps 96:1-2a, 2b-3, 7-8a, 10

R. (3) Proclaim God's marvelous deeds to all the nations.
Sing to the LORD a new song;
sing to the LORD, all you lands.
Sing to the LORD; bless his name.
R. Proclaim God's marvelous deeds to all the nations.
Announce his salvation, day after day.
Tell his glory among the nations;
among all peoples, his wondrous deeds.
R. Proclaim God's marvelous deeds to all the nations.
Give to the LORD, you families of nations,
give to the LORD glory and praise;
give to the LORD the glory due his name!
R. Proclaim God's marvelous deeds to all the nations.
Say among the nations: The LORD is king.
He has made the world firm, not to be moved;
he governs the peoples with equity.
R. Proclaim God's marvelous deeds to all the nations.

Alleluia Ps 119:105

R. Alleluia, alleluia.
A lamp to my feet is your word,
a light to my path.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel Mk 4:21-25

Jesus said to his disciples,
"Is a lamp brought in to be placed under a bushel basket
or under a bed,
and not to be placed on a lampstand?
For there is nothing hidden except to be made visible;
nothing is secret except to come to light.
Anyone who has ears to hear ought to hear."
He also told them, "Take care what you hear.
The measure with which you measure will be measured out to you,
and still more will be given to you.
To the one who has, more will be given;
from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away."

Meditation: 2 Timothy 1:1-8

Saints Timothy and Titus, Bishops (Memorial)

To Timothy, my dear child. (2 Timothy 1:2)

Mentoring. It's something businesses are encouraging, and social organizations are promoting more and more. There is a growing recognition that mentoring develops the trainee and benefits the whole group. But it's not just a new idea. Take a look at St. Paul, for example. He may have been an apostle with a missionary heart, but he was also a dedicated mentor to the people he wanted to form as leaders in their own right. And of all the people he chose, none were more dear to him than Timothy, his "dear child" in the faith (2 Timothy 1:2).

Paul met Timothy in the city of Lystra, and he was so impressed by the young man's faith that he brought him along on his travels. He also took responsibility for Timothy's spiritual growth and taught him how to be a missionary and a pastor. But beyond his role as student and protégé, Timothy became something even more important to Paul: a true friend.

When you go to Mass this Sunday, take a look around you. Surely there are plenty of people who could use some support. Maybe a larger family would benefit from a kind glance and extra space in your pew. Or maybe your youth group or RCIA program needs some help.

This may sound intimidating, but it doesn't have to be. Just try getting to know someone new after Mass. Strike up a simple conversation. You might discover something you have in common. You might feel prompted to help or pray for that person. Be prepared for the Holy Spirit to use even your small steps to open up new possibilities for deeper relationships.

Think about how Paul, despite traveling far and wide, stayed in touch with so many people. Think too about the effect these relationships must have had, both on him and on the whole Church.

Ask God to put someone on your heart today. All it takes is the first step of reaching out. Take that first step, and see how the Spirit multiplies your efforts. You never know how much good can come until you try!

"Holy Spirit, teach me how to reach out to people I meet at church."

Mark 4:21-25

The Holy Word said today, "For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but rather of power and love and self-control.So do not be ashamed of your testimony to our Lord, nor of me, a prisoner for his sake; but bear your share of hardship for the Gospel with the strength that comes from God." In this sentence are the secrets of the light of the Lord. The light is a source that is tapped into a source. The light is not a coward that turns from love and self control, but is love controls self for being connected with the source. The light too, is testimony, and bearing the cross.

We pray today "Proclaim God's marvelous deeds to all the nations.
Announce his salvation, day after day. Tell his glory among the nations; among all peoples, his wondrous deeds." Go tell, go proclaim, go announce, go and be the light of Christ.

The Lord comes into our lives today "For there is nothing hidden except to be made visible; nothing is secret except to come to light." The truth is the testimony. The truth is the announcement. The truth is Jesus talking to us. Secrets are shouted in the next life, to your betterment or detriment. It would be better to be in the light always, in the state of living and sanctifying grace always. It is hard to be the light. Sin keeps you down, the body keeps one down, I struggle to write to you right now, it is painful to walk, to sit, and to lay down, but I struggle and strive and fight for that next step, a step in faith. To me, a wrong step right now with a broken pelvis means I could step into an agonizing and torture chamber that could last for an hour or hours. But I have to take a step. I thank you for your prayers, I am at home healing. But I am looking for the light in my world. Yesterday, I was alone in the hospital, slowly the pains began to increase, I began a rosary as I clenched through the pains. It was an agonizing rosary, at the 4th mystery I called the nurses to bring me pain medicine. I kept praying. I finished in great agony, the nurse walks in and a therapist. I take medicine and stretching lessons. They soon leave. I sit alone. Suddenly a tall older blondish man comes in, he introduces himself and says he comes to offer prayer and Holy Communion. The light had come into my room. He prays for me and provides the body of Christ. He leaves. I get a sudden cramp, pain. It subsides. The living body of Christ had come. It was the people that had brought Christ. Had the man not wanted to be a minister, I would not receive blessings....what He provided to me was love....
Thank you for your ongoing love...your prayers
