St. Hesychius of Jerusalem

(c. 450)

Not only is the name of today's saint a bit hard to pronounce and spell. It's also difficult to learn about such a modest and gentle man who lived in the fourth and fifth century and who is better known in the Russian Orthodox Church.

The birth date of Hesychius (pronounced HESH-us) is unclear, but we know that he was a priest and monk who wrote a history of the Church, unfortunately lost. He also wrote about many of the burning issues of his day. These included the heresy of Nestorianism, which held that there were two separate persons in Jesus—one human, one divine—and the heresy of Arianism, which denied the divinity of Christ. Some of his commentaries on the books of the Bible as well, along with meditations on the prophets and homilies on the Blessed Virgin Mary, still survive.

It's believed Hesychius delivered Easter homilies in the basilica in Jerusalem thought to be the place of the crucifixion.

His words on the Eucharist, written centuries ago, speak to us today: "Keep yourselves free from sin so that every day you may share in the mystic meal; by doing so our bodies become the body of Christ."

Hesychius died around the year 450.

Presence

God is with me, but more,
God is within me, giving me existence.
Let me dwell for a moment on God's life-giving presence
in my body, my mind, my heart
and in the whole of my life.

Freedom

Lord, guide me always
to do your holy will
knowing that your strength
will carry me through.

Consciousness

Help me Lord to be more conscious of your presence.
Teach me to recognise your presence in others.
Fill my heart with gratitude for the times Your love has been shown to me through the care of others.

The Word of God

Monday in the Octave of Easter

Reading 1 Acts 2:14, 22-33

On the day of Pentecost, Peter stood up with the Eleven,
raised his voice, and proclaimed:
"You who are Jews, indeed all of you staying in Jerusalem.
Let this be known to you, and listen to my words.

"You who are children of Israel, hear these words.
Jesus the Nazorean was a man commended to you by God
with mighty deeds, wonders, and signs,
which God worked through him in your midst, as you yourselves know.
This man, delivered up by the set plan and foreknowledge of God,
you killed, using lawless men to crucify him.
But God raised him up, releasing him from the throes of death,
because it was impossible for him to be held by it.
For David says of him:

I saw the Lord ever before me,
with him at my right hand I shall not be disturbed.
Therefore my heart has been glad and my tongue has exulted;
my flesh, too, will dwell in hope,
because you will not abandon my soul to the nether world,
nor will you suffer your holy one to see corruption.
You have made known to me the paths of life;
you will fill me with joy in your presence.

My brothers, one can confidently say to you
about the patriarch David that he died and was buried,
and his tomb is in our midst to this day.
But since he was a prophet and knew that God had sworn an oath to him
that he would set one of his descendants upon his throne,
he foresaw and spoke of the resurrection of the Christ,
that neither was he abandoned to the netherworld
nor did his flesh see corruption.
God raised this Jesus;
of this we are all witnesses.
Exalted at the right hand of God,
he poured forth the promise of the Holy Spirit
that he received from the Father, as you both see and hear."

Responsorial Psalm PS 16:1-2a and 5, 7-8, 9-10, 11

R. (1) Keep me safe, O God; you are my hope.

or:

R. Alleluia.

Keep me, O God, for in you I take refuge;
I say to the LORD, "My Lord are you."
O LORD, my allotted portion and my cup,
you it is who hold fast my lot.

R. (1) Keep me safe, O God; you are my hope.

or:

R. Alleluia.

I bless the LORD who counsels me;
even in the night my heart exhorts me.
I set the LORD ever before me;
with him at my right hand I shall not be disturbed.

R. (1) Keep me safe, O God; you are my hope.

or:

R. Alleluia.

Therefore my heart is glad and my soul rejoices,
my body, too, abides in confidence;
Because you will not abandon my soul to the nether world,
nor will you suffer your faithful one to undergo corruption.

R. (1) Keep me safe, O God; you are my hope.

or:

R. Alleluia.

You will show me the path to life,
fullness of joys in your presence,
the delights at your right hand forever.

R. (1) Keep me safe, O God; you are my hope.

or:

R. Alleluia.

Alleluia Ps 118:24

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

This is the day the LORD has made;
let us be glad and rejoice in it.

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel Mt 28:8-15

Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went away quickly from the tomb,
fearful yet overjoyed,
and ran to announce the news to his disciples.
And behold, Jesus met them on their way and greeted them.
They approached, embraced his feet, and did him homage.
Then Jesus said to them, "Do not be afraid.
Go tell my brothers to go to Galilee,
and there they will see me."

While they were going, some of the guard went into the city
and told the chief priests all that had happened.
The chief priests assembled with the elders and took counsel;
then they gave a large sum of money to the soldiers,
telling them, "You are to say,
'His disciples came by night and stole him while we were asleep.'
And if this gets to the ears of the governor,
we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble."
The soldiers took the money and did as they were instructed.
And this story has circulated among the Jews to the present day.

Conversation

Jesus you speak to me through the words of the gospels.
May I respond to your call today.
Teach me to recognise your hand at work in my daily living.

Conclusion

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
As it was in the beginning,
is now and ever shall be,
world without end.

Meditation: Acts 2:14, 22-33

Monday within the Octave of Easter

God raised this Jesus; of this we are all witnesses. (Acts 2:32)

Remember a time when you had exciting news? You couldn't wait to tell your family or a close friend. You walked with an extra bounce in your step. Smiling came easy, and your heart was filled with hope. Well, today we have more than enough of a reason to not be silent: Jesus is risen from the dead! He has triumphed over sin and broken the chains of death. Now he offers a new life to all of us. Because of the miracle of Easter, it is clear that nothing is impossible for God.

Everyone needs to have something to hope in. The problem is that the world tells us to limit our hopes to this world—the hope for a peaceful life, the hope for a better future for our children, the hope that we can get ahead a little bit in the world. Of course, there's nothing wrong with these hopes, but they don't satisfy the deepest yearnings of our hearts. Only Jesus and his promise of the resurrection can do that. And only Jesus can give meaning to the other hopes we cherish.

God wants to open our eyes to the beauty of a life lived in and through his Son. He wants to show us a life that includes the mysteries and wonders of heaven along with a sense of vision and purpose for our earthly lives.

Peter was excited because something new and wonderful had touched his life. As we recall how Jesus has touched our lives, we will feel compelled to share our own sense of hope and excitement with the people around us. And likewise, the more we step out of our comfort zones to talk about Jesus, the more excited we will become. Why? Because just as Peter discovered, there is power in the message of the gospel. People's lives change when they hear it—even if it comes from everyday people like ourselves. So don't be afraid to tell people about God's love. Don't be afraid to tell them about how Jesus' resurrection can overcome their fear and sin. People are longing for the answer—and you can give it to them!

"Jesus, risen Lord, give me the boldness to share the good news of your victory today. Help me not to stay silent but to proclaim that you are our best and brightest hope!"

Psalm 16:1-2, 5, 7-11
Matthew 28:8-15

my2cents:
My brothers and sisters, we read today "You have made known to me the paths of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence.", the Lord has made known to us the paths of life. Last week we heard about His Passion. How He was beaten to look deformed. This is how our life is to be: allowed to let God mold us. Yesterday, many of my nephews and nieces opened their plastic eggs in their hunts to find putty. My sister said she had put all sorts of putty in the eggs. The kids were happy to open it and to be able to play with what was in the Easter egg...clay to mold. That is what is inside of ourselves, a spirit that can be molded, and better said...transformed.
In the Psalms we pray "You will show me the path to life, fullness of joys in your presence, the delights at your right hand forever." And what is at the right hand of our Father in Heaven? The Beloved...Jesus. The right hand man at work, is the right hand chosen. The right hand man means much at work because it is Him you can trust to do everything you want done. This means much to us, because the Father, our Father in Heaven, has entrusted His right hand to us, with Him at our right hand, we are in good hands, take His left hand, feel the wound been healed, press it on to your wounds, and let the love of healing begin. Easter begins...and we are celebrating for 50 days to Pentecost.
The Lord comes into our lives, and the Marys are found at His feet AGAIN. LOL, boy, did they love the Lord! He evangelizes the women that love Him so much. He loves them so much too. What is it about this Man, that these women love Him so much? I'll tell you what, these Marys knew the darkness, but now had found the light, the love of their lives, a Father, a Father that loved them like no other man could love them. This is Jesus, the right one, the right hand in our left hand, and He has never left. If He left, the world would be in shambles, but as it stands, it is not, and it is because of His faithfulness. He suffered shambles and total destruction, so that we might be recreated. And you? And me? Now as the Son rises this Easter Monday, how is the light directing my life? What have I to look forward to? What have I been delivered from and into? Glory. Life eternal, the promise awaits. The Lord says to the women "Go tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me." Let this be a proclamation unto your heart. The Lord is calling us to go meet Him, where we will see Him. Our Father awaits, and will begin to appear in ways you never thought possible!
