† ""You will not be released until .."

Quote of the Day

“If you are suffering from a bad man’s injustice, forgive him—lest there be two bad men.” -St. Augustine

Today’s Meditation

"By accepting the sufferings ‘offered’ by life and allowed by God for our progress and purification, we spare ourselves much harder ones. We need to develop this kind of realism and, once and for all, stop dreaming of a life without suffering or conflict. That is the life of heaven, not earth. We must take up our cross and follow Christ courageously every day; the bitterness of that cross will sooner or later be transformed into sweetness." —Fr. Jacques Philippe, p. 49

Daily Verse

While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them." Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off. -Acts 12:2-3

St Barnabas

St. Barnabas (1st c.) was a Jew from the island of Cyprus who was given the name Joseph at birth. He is mentioned by name in the New Testament. A convert to the Christian faith in Jerusalem, he sold his property and preached the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles alongside St. Paul the Apostle and St. Mark the Evangelist. He was given the surname Barnabas, meaning 'Son of Exhortation' and was highly esteemed among the Christian leaders at Jerusalem and Antioch, almost ranked among the twelve Apostles themselves. St. Luke said of him, "...for he was a good man, full of the Holy Ghost and of Faith." It was Barnabas who vouched for the genuineness of St. Paul's conversion and had him accepted as a Christian by the other Apostles. Barnabas was the cousin of St. Mark, and Barnabas famously disputed with St. Paul over bringing Mark along on their missionary journey, which caused the two famed preachers to part ways and travel separately as recorded in the Acts of the Apostles. They were later reconciled. Barnabas was eventually stoned to death around the year 61 A.D. His feast day is celebrated on June 11.

Memorial of Saint Barnabas, Apostle

Lectionary: 580/362

Reading 1

Acts 11:21b-26; 13:1-3

In those days a great number who believed turned to the Lord.

The news about them reached the ears of the Church in Jerusalem,

and they sent Barnabas to go to Antioch.

When he arrived and saw the grace of God,

he rejoiced and encouraged them all

to remain faithful to the Lord in firmness of heart,

for he was a good man, filled with the Holy Spirit and faith.

And a large number of people was added to the Lord.

Then he went to Tarsus to look for Saul,

and when he had found him he brought him to Antioch.

For a whole year they met with the Church

and taught a large number of people,

and it was in Antioch that the disciples

were first called Christians.

Now there were in the Church at Antioch prophets and teachers:

Barnabas, Symeon who was called Niger,

Lucius of Cyrene,

Manaen who was a close friend of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.

While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said,

“Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul

for the work to which I have called them.”

Then, completing their fasting and prayer,

they laid hands on them and sent them off.

Responsorial Psalm

Psalm 98:1, 2-3ab, 3cd-4, 5-6

R. (see 2b) The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power.

Sing to the LORD a new song,

for he has done wondrous deeds;

His right hand has won victory for him,

his holy arm.

R. The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power.

The LORD has made his salvation known:

in the sight of the nations he has revealed his justice.

He has remembered his kindness and his faithfulness

toward the house of Israel.

R. The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power.

All the ends of the earth have seen

the salvation by our God.

Sing joyfully to the LORD, all you lands;

break into song; sing praise.

R. The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power.

Sing praise to the LORD with the harp,

with the harp and melodious song.

With trumpets and the sound of the horn

sing joyfully before the King, the LORD.

R. The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power.

Alleluia

John 13:34

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

I give you a new commandment:

love one another as I have loved you.

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel

Matthew 5:20-26

Jesus said to his disciples:

"I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that

of the scribes and Pharisees,

you will not enter into the Kingdom of heaven.

"You have heard that it was said to your ancestors,

You shall not kill; and whoever kills will be liable to judgment.

But I say to you, whoever is angry with his brother

will be liable to judgment,

and whoever says to his brother, Raqa,

will be answerable to the Sanhedrin,

and whoever says, 'You fool,' will be liable to fiery Gehenna.

Therefore, if you bring your gift to the altar,

and there recall that your brother

has anything against you,

leave your gift there at the altar,

go first and be reconciled with your brother,

and then come and offer your gift.

Settle with your opponent quickly while on the way to court with him.

Otherwise your opponent will hand you over to the judge,

and the judge will hand you over to the guard,

and you will be thrown into prison.

Amen, I say to you,

you will not be released until you have paid the last penny."

Daily Meditation: Acts 11:21-26; 13:1-3

He was a good man, filled with the Holy Spirit and faith. (Acts 11:24)

St. Barnabas, whose feast we celebrate today, had an impressive résumé. He was a pioneering missionary, evangelist, and teacher. He also had a gift for relating to people. He’s the one who convinced the apostles to welcome Paul, the former persecutor, as a brother in the Lord (Acts 9:26-28). When the apostles sent Barnabas to Antioch, where Jewish and Gentile believers had come together to form a new church, he encouraged them all to persevere in love for one another (Acts 11:23).

How did Barnabas accomplish all of this? He was, of course, a dedicated disciple. But as today’s first reading tells us, he was also “filled with the Holy Spirit and faith” (Acts 11:24).

Today’s reading gives us one example of how the Holy Spirit took Barnabas’ natural gift of encouragement and filled it with divine grace. But there are others. When he sought to ease the apostles’ concerns about Paul’s sincerity, it wasn’t just his words that convinced them. The Spirit, working through him, helped calm their fears. And at Antioch, Barnabas’ humility and openness to the Spirit made it easier for the believers there to receive his encouragement to remain united in Christ.

Today the Church honors Barnabas, not just as a great hero of the faith, but also as a model for us to follow. We can all become like Barnabas because every one of us who has been baptized has received the same Holy Spirit that he did. Like Barnabas, each of us can invite the Spirit to can take our natural gifts and fill them with his grace and power.

It’s good to remind yourself every now and then that you are “filled with the Holy Spirit and faith.” Whether you are working, studying, or parenting, he is with you to increase your patience and your faithfulness to your calling. When you are in the midst of a difficult conversation with someone, he is with you to help you choose your words wisely and to give you his compassion and peace. The Spirit is always ready to fill you and empower you to share your gifts with everyone around you.

“Lord, help me to remain open to your Spirit today.”

Psalm 98:1-6

Reflections with Brother Adrian:

From today's Holy Gospel:

But I say to you, whoever is angry with his brother

will be liable to judgment,

and whoever says to his brother, Raqa,

will be answerable to the Sanhedrin,

and whoever says, 'You fool,' will be liable to fiery Gehenna. ... ”

From Roberto Juarez:
"Today's Gospel invites us to look at our hearts with sincerity. We can ask ourselves: Do I hold resentment towards anyone? Are there people I refuse to forgive? Have I hurt anyone with my words? Do I seek reconciliation or do I always hope that it is the other who takes the first step? These are uncomfortable questions, but necessary. Because holiness is not just about avoiding great sins. It also involves purifying the attitudes of the heart.
Every time we celebrate the Eucharist we hear these words: "Give one another fraternal peace". It is not a gesture of courtesy. It is a reminder that we cannot fully receive the Body of Christ while closing our hearts to our brothers and sisters. Communion with God always impels us towards communion with others.
Today Jesus invites us to a deeper justice, a justice that is born of love and transforms the heart. Let us ask Him to free us from the anger that destroys, the resentment that enslaves, the words that hurt. And may he grant us the courage to seek reconciliation, knowing that those who forgive are like the Father and those who work for peace are already building the Kingdom of God." end quote.

God is looking at our heart.

Everything about Jesus, is about the Sacred Heart. I have often said that our Lord Jesus is the very embodiment of the Heart, the SACRED Heart of God Himself.

And the Eucharist in all its miracles proves to be the very heart of Jesus, and still remains beating in us today.
This is the importance of...doing God's will. Remember that huge book I'm tuning into, about 36 volumes of books, about the "Book of Heaven"? It is about the Holy Will of our Holy God and Father in Heaven.

and so, when our Lord speaks about forgiving others, he is dead serious. Death to those who choose to disobey. The person chooses death, not our Lord. We choose disobedience, and the disobedient want to blame God Himself. Not so.

As we live and breath, we have ample opportunity for grace and mercy. Starting with you and me. I don't want to face flames of purification for calling somebody "stupid". I don't want to face purgatory flames for ignoring charity. Those people that hurt you, BOY! They are offering you a chance for forgiveness! How weird! How backwards it seems!

It hurts, but outstretch those arms like Christ, and let that love of God pour out with mercy and grace.

God's Heavens are bursting at the seems with this mercy and grace...and it hurts Him not to be able to pour Himself out through us each and every day, each and every moment.
We are that faucet, that channel. If only we would choose to open up. To prayer. To sacrifice. To LOVE HIMSELF!

Today, our country is being consecrated to this very SACRED HEART.
Lord Hear us. God graciously Hear us.
That we may love Thee, that we may truly honor Thee, that way may live for Thee, and By Thy Divine Light in Love. God is Love.

Novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

In celebration and honor of the USCCB’s Historic Nationwide Novena (June 3-11) and Consecration of the United States to the Sacred Heart of Jesus (June 11) being promulgated by our Bishops, we present to you the Efficacious Novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, attributed to Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque:

This novena prayer is attributed to St. Margaret Mary Alocoque who widely promoted devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Saint Padre Pio recited this novena daily for all those who requested his prayers.

The following prayers are to be recited DAILY for 9 consecutive days with the Act of Reparation to be added on the 9th and final day of the novena.

SACRED HEART NOVENA

O my Jesus, You have said:
“Truly I say to you, ask and you will receive,
seek and you will find,
knock and it will be opened to you.”
Behold I knock, I seek and ask:
May the Sacred Heart of Jesus
reign in our homes and in our nation.

Our Father . . . Hail Mary . . . Glory Be . . .
Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in you.

O my Jesus, You have said: “Truly I say to you, if you ask
anything of the Father in my name, He will give it to you.”
Behold, in Your name, I ask:
May the Sacred Heart ofJesus
reign in our homes and in our nation.

Our Father . . . Hail Mary . . . Glory Be . . .
Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in you.

O my Jesus, You have said:
“Truly I say to you, heaven and earth
will pass away but my words will not pass away.”
Encouraged by Your infallible words I now ask:
May the Sacred Heart of Jesus
reign in our homes and in our nation.

Our Father . . . Hail Mary . . . Glory Be . . .
Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in you.

O Sacred Heart of Jesus, for whom it is impossible
not to have compassion on the afflicted,
have pity on us miserable sinners and grant us the grace
which we ask of You, through the
Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary,
Your tender Mother and ours.

Hail Holy Queen . . .
St. Joseph, foster father of Jesus, pray for us.
Amen.

Act of Reparation to the Sacred Heart
(To be said only on the final day of the novena)

Most Loving Jesus, when I consider Your tender Heart and
see it full of mercy and tenderness toward sinners,
my own heart is filled with joy and confidence
that I shall be so kindly welcomed by You.
Unfortunately, how many times have I sinned!
But now, with Peter and with Magdalene,
I weep for my sins and detest them
because they offend You, infinite Goodness.
Mercifully grant me pardon for them all;
and let me die rather than offend You again;
at least let me live only to love You in return.
Amen.

DAILY PRAYER FOR AMERICA 250
By Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke

O Sacred Heart of Jesus, King of Heaven and Earth,
I place today my nation, the United States of America,
into Your Heart pierced for love of us.

On the 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence,
I acknowledge that true liberty is Your gift,
and that our lasting homeland is the eternal Kingdom of God.

Under the mantle of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas,
and through the intercession of her Immaculate Heart,
bless my homeland anew, purify her from sin,
and guide her leaders in truth, justice, and peace,
so that she may safeguard all human life,
respect the integrity of marriage and the family,
and honor the practice of religion.

Reign in my home and in my nation.
Draw every heart into communion with You,
that Your truth, love, justice, mercy, and peace may triumph
in America and throughout the world.
Amen
