Saint Quote:

“The glory of God is man fully alive, and the life of man is the vision of God.” -St. Irenaeus

Today’s Meditation

"What words, can, alas, express the deep grief of the Blessed Virgin? Her eyes closed, a death-like tint overspread her countenance; unable to stand, she fell to the ground, but was soon lifted up, and supported by John, Magdalen, and the others. She looked once more upon her beloved Son—that Son whom she had conceived by the Holy Ghost, the flesh of her flesh, the bone of her bone, the heart of her heart—hanging on a cross between two thieves; crucified, dishonored, condemned by those whom He came on earth to save; and well might she at this moment be termed ‘the Queen of Martyrs.'" —Bl. Anne Catherine Emmerich, p. 294

Daily Verse

For thus says the high and lofty One who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: "I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite. -Isaiah 57:15

St Ivo

St. Ivo of Kermartin (1253–1303) was born to a noble family in Brittany, France. He studied civil and canon law, philosophy, and theology. He went on to practice law for many years in both the civil and ecclesiastical courts. He graciously defended the poor without charge, and visited them in prison as they awaited trial. He also worked to settle matters out of court to save litigants money and time. For these good works he became known as "Advocate of the Poor." St. Ivo also practiced a life of asceticism; he wore a hairshirt under his clothing, fasted regularly, and became a Franciscan Tertiary. These spiritual disciplines aided him in his practice of virtue in the courtroom: he fought the State in court on behalf of the rights of the Church, and became a diocesan judge who was unable to be tempted by bribes. St. Ivo eventually resigned from practicing law and joined the priesthood. He used the funds from his years practicing law to build a hospital for the poor, and he fed them with the harvests of his land. He became a miracle-worker during his life, feeding hundreds from a single loaf of bread. St. Ivo is the patron saint of judges, attorneys, lawyers, orphans, bailiffs, advocates, and canon lawyers. His feast day is May 19th.

Tuesday of the Seventh Week of Easter

Lectionary: 298

Reading 1

Acts 20:17-27

From Miletus Paul had the presbyters

of the Church at Ephesus summoned.

When they came to him, he addressed them,

"You know how I lived among you

the whole time from the day I first came to the province of Asia.

I served the Lord with all humility

and with the tears and trials that came to me

because of the plots of the Jews,

and I did not at all shrink from telling you

what was for your benefit,

or from teaching you in public or in your homes.

I earnestly bore witness for both Jews and Greeks

to repentance before God and to faith in our Lord Jesus.

But now, compelled by the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem.

What will happen to me there I do not know,

except that in one city after another

the Holy Spirit has been warning me

that imprisonment and hardships await me.

Yet I consider life of no importance to me,

if only I may finish my course

and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus,

to bear witness to the Gospel of God's grace.

"But now I know that none of you

to whom I preached the kingdom during my travels

will ever see my face again.

And so I solemnly declare to you this day

that I am not responsible for the blood of any of you,

for I did not shrink from proclaiming to you the entire plan of God."

Responsorial Psalm

Psalm 68:10-11, 20-21

R. (33a) Sing to God, O kingdoms of the earth.

or:

R. Alleluia.

A bountiful rain you showered down, O God, upon your inheritance;

you restored the land when it languished;

Your flock settled in it;

in your goodness, O God, you provided it for the needy.

R. Sing to God, O kingdoms of the earth.

or:

R. Alleluia.

Blessed day by day be the Lord,

who bears our burdens; God, who is our salvation.

God is a saving God for us;

the LORD, my Lord, controls the passageways of death.

R. Sing to God, O kingdoms of the earth.

or:

R. Alleluia.

Alleluia

John 14:16

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

I will ask the Father

and he will give you another Advocate

to be with you always.

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel

John 17:1-11a

Jesus raised his eyes to heaven and said,

"Father, the hour has come.

Give glory to your son, so that your son may glorify you,

just as you gave him authority over all people,

so that your son may give eternal life to all you gave him.

Now this is eternal life,

that they should know you, the only true God,

and the one whom you sent, Jesus Christ.

I glorified you on earth

by accomplishing the work that you gave me to do.

Now glorify me, Father, with you,

with the glory that I had with you before the world began.

"I revealed your name to those whom you gave me out of the world.

They belonged to you, and you gave them to me,

and they have kept your word.

Now they know that everything you gave me is from you,

because the words you gave to me I have given to them,

and they accepted them and truly understood that I came from you,

and they have believed that you sent me.

I pray for them.

I do not pray for the world but for the ones you have given me,

because they are yours, and everything of mine is yours

and everything of yours is mine,

and I have been glorified in them.

And now I will no longer be in the world,

but they are in the world, while I am coming to you."

Daily Meditation: Acts 20:17-27

I did not shrink from proclaiming to you the entire plan of God. (Acts 20:27)

If there’s one worry that many of us share, it’s the fear that we will face our final days with regrets, either about what we said or did or what we failed to say or do.

In today’s first reading, Paul seems to have no regrets as he journeys to Rome as a prisoner facing trial. Stopping near Ephesus, he tells the elders of the church there that he is satisfied that he has done his best, especially when it comes to “proclaiming . . . the entire plan of God” to them (Acts 20:27). Later, from a Roman prison, he writes something similar to his protégé, Timothy, who had become the bishop of Ephesus: “The time of my departure is at hand. I have competed well; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith” (2 Timothy 4:6-7).

You’re probably not a missionary traveling all around the world preaching the gospel. But each of us has been called to live as missionary disciples in our homes, workplaces, and neighborhoods. So what would it take for you to speak about your “missionary” work as confidently as Paul speaks about his?

There’s no one “right” answer to that question. Every person is in a different environment and has different skills, gifts, and callings. So every person will have his or her own way of preaching the gospel. For some it will be to their children as they teach them to pray and to love the Lord. For others it will be to their coworkers as they announce the gospel through the witness of their lives. But no matter the situation, we all have opportunities where we can fulfill Jesus’ command to “make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19).

Perhaps today you could reflect on how the Lord may be calling you to a life of “proclaiming . . . the entire plan of God” to the people around you. Are there steps you could take to strengthen your witness? Are there ways you could become more attentive to opportunities to share your faith? Sit peacefully with the Holy Spirit and ask him to help you answer these questions. And whatever you do, know that you are never alone. The Spirit is always with you to guide you and empower you.

“Jesus, teach me how to proclaim your good news!”

Psalm 68:10-11, 20-21

John 17:1-11

From today's Holy Gospel:

".......Jesus raised his eyes to heaven and said,

"Father, the hour has come.

Give glory to your son, so that your son may glorify you,

just as you gave him authority over all people,

so that your son may give eternal life to all you gave him.

Now this is eternal life,

that they should know you, the only true God,

and the one whom you sent, Jesus Christ.

I glorified you on earth

by accomplishing the work that you gave me to do.

Now glorify me, Father, with you,

with the glory that I had with you before the world began.

"I revealed your name to those whom you gave me out of the world.

They belonged to you, and you gave them to me,

and they have kept your word. ..... ”

From Bishop Barron:

"Now, in his passion and death, Jesus brought heaven all the way down into the world. He carried the divine light into the darkest places of the human condition—hatred, cruelty, violence, corruption, stupidity, suffering, and death itself—and thereby transformed them. And the proof that heaven is able to transform earth is, of course, the resurrection.

Now we know that cruelty, hatred, violence, fear, suffering, and death are not the most powerful forces in the world. Now we know that divine love is more powerful. God’s kingdom has, in principle, broken the kingdoms of the world, which thrive upon, and in turn produce, those very negativities.
end quote."

From Roberto Juarez;

"Although today's liturgical text ends before completing the sentence, Jesus' concern for the disciples already appears. He knows that they will remain in the midst of the world, with difficulties, temptations and persecutions. That is why he entrusts them to the Father.
Today the Gospel invites us to contemplate Christ in prayer, united to the Father, giving himself fully and interceding for his own.
Let us ask the Lord that we too may learn to live united to him, that we may discover that true life lies in knowing him, and that we may remain faithful to the mission we have received. And when we feel weakness or uncertainty, let us remember that Jesus of Nazareth continues to pray for us, continues to sustain his Church, and continues to lead us to eternal life."

Is there anything that amazes you about our Father God? The very fact that we can even call Him Father should be amazing to all of us. To believe that we belong to Him, should amaze you.
To believe that the world is created for His purpose, and to find our purpose in Him, should amaze us.
And to read the words of Christ speaking about glory, and being glorified, and then to hear about Him being crucified? Wow.
There are no words for that.

A holocaust, and the Glory being consumed into Himself.

And how do we hear about God's glory in the bible? Hang on, this gets deep.

*The Pillar of Cloud and Fire: God's glory physically guided the Israelites through the wilderness, appearing as a protective cloud by day and a radiant fire by night.

*Mount Sinai: The glory of the Lord descended on the mountain like a "consuming fire," so overwhelming that the people were terrified to approach.

*The Tabernacle & Temple: When Moses finished the Tabernacle and later when King Solomon dedicated the Temple, the glory of the Lord physically filled the structures in a brilliant cloud, so potent that the priests could not continue their service.

Key Theological Concepts"Weight" and "Splendor":
*The Hebrew word kavod translates literally to "heavy" or "weighty".
In a theological context, it conveys that God's presence holds the ultimate substance, supreme value, and supreme importance in the universe.Unapproachable

*Holiness: Because God's glory is the absolute fullness of His perfection, it is inherently dangerous to sinful humanity. When Moses asked to see God's glory, God revealed His "goodness" but hid him in the cleft of the rock, warning that no mortal could see His face and live.

*Departure and Return: The book of Ezekiel graphically details the departure of God's glory (Ichabod) from the Jerusalem Temple because of the nation's persistent sin and idolatry. This sets the stage for the New Testament, where this same glory is revealed in the person of Jesus Christ

And this is huge. Because it took much to make this word and sword of God to be stabbed into a rock on earth.

Who would stab a sword in a rock? The cross is mounted on a mountain. The whole of the Old Testament is fulfilled in Christ.
The seraph, a pole, the inhumanity brought upon God Himself in Jesus. And how it afflicts me, to even think that we humans tortured Him and put a dagger in His heart. A complete rejection, a wound. And out of the heart oozes nothing but love and mercy.
Come receive now what fuels the world...God is the source of everything. He is completely amazing. And yet...we get to call Him Father, because of the blood of Jesus. Mind blowing to say the least. There are no words for all of this.
Just gratitude should fill our hearts. The dark glory, brings greater glory. God does amazing things with what we think is impossible.
