Thanksgiving Day

Thanksgiving Day [In the Dioceses of the United States]

Lectionary: 943-947

The following are a selection of the readings that may be chosen for this day.
Reading I

Sirach 50:22-24

And now, bless the God of all,

who has done wondrous things on earth;
Who fosters people's growth from their mother's womb,

and fashions them according to his will!
May he grant you joy of heart

and may peace abide among you;
May his goodness toward us endure in Israel

to deliver us in our days.

Responsorial Psalm

1 Corinthians 1:3-9

as the testimony to Christ was confirmed among you,
so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift

Luke 17:11-19

As Jesus continued his journey to Jerusalem,
he traveled through Samaria and Galilee.
As he was entering a village, ten persons with leprosy met him.
They stood at a distance from him and raised their voices, saying,
"Jesus, Master! Have pity on us!"
And when he saw them, he said,
"Go show yourselves to the priests."
As they were going they were cleansed.
And one of them, realizing he had been healed,
returned, glorifying God in a loud voice;
and he fell at the feet of Jesus and thanked him.
He was a Samaritan.
Jesus said in reply,
"Ten were cleansed, were they not?
Where are the other nine?
Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks to God?"
Then he said to him, "Stand up and go;
your faith has saved you."

Daily Meditation: Daniel 6:12-28

The king . . . hastened to the lions' den. (Daniel 6:20)

When Daniel was miraculously saved from certain death in the lions' den, King Darius was filled with "great joy" (Daniel 6:24). But why would a pagan king be so concerned about a young Jewish captive who was forced to serve the royal household? Earlier in the Book of Daniel, we learn that Daniel had "an extraordinary spirit" and had a reputation for excellence (6:4). He had already put his God-given gifts of interpreting dreams and visions at the service of the court as well. It seems that these qualities impressed Darius and even endeared Daniel to him.

Life in Babylon could not have been easy for Daniel. He must have seen and heard many things that grieved and offended him. But all his talents and skills, as well as his heart of service, made Daniel very valuable to the king. So much so that he made Daniel one of the three highest officials in the kingdom! Yet through it all, Daniel held tightly to the Lord. He continued to practice his faith, praying and observing Jewish customs as best he could.

The story of Daniel comes from a distant time and place and an environment few of us could imagine. But maybe you can relate to his dilemma a little bit. Maybe your beliefs make you feel isolated in your workplace or school. You may be the only practicing Catholic in your family, and you long to be surrounded by people who share your faith. But today's reading shows us that, for many of us, we may be exactly where God wants us. He may have put us there to be an intercessor or to be a friend. He may be calling us to bear witness to God's goodness by the example of our lives.

God sends us to "shine before others, that they may see [our] good deeds and glorify [our] heavenly Father" (Matthew 5:16). This may look like showing love when it's unexpected, working with dedication when it's not noticed, or giving honor when it's not popular. Why? So that the goodness of the one true God and his kingdom may be revealed throughout the world.

"Holy Spirit, help me to shine brightly where I am today."

From today's Holy Gospel:

"... Jesus said in reply,

your faith has saved you....."

Word of the Lord.

Where are the other 9 that forgot to give thanks?
Where did they go?
How many times did you receive a blessing and forget to give thanks?
What blessing?
Your life?
The breathe of fresh air?

Your eyes, and senses?
And your heart?

Thanksgiving would change everything.
Gratitude becomes an attitude.
And we are speaking greatness in humility.
We are speaking the biggest truth hidden in mystery...
and I am speaking of Christ, in the Eucharist.
Thanksgiving means Eucharist.
But who is coming to give thanks? The Heavens?
You? All of us?
Is it an exchange? I believe in the Holy Mass, angels take up our offerings of Love to God.

He don't need nothing...He created us for Himself...and He loves love, what a treasure in Heaven. God loves Love, Himself in an explosive outward giving that eventually is calling itself back into Himself. Fishing? Harvesting? Yes, everything. I want to be caught in His net, and be caught giving fruit He desires....Love.
Gratitude becomes love. Obedience can lead us there. All the way to the cross.
There, thanksgiving is happening eternally. Worship.
