Today's Meditation

"I desire that you know more profoundly the love that burns in My Heart for souls, and you will understand this when you meditate upon My Passion. Call upon My mercy on behalf of sinners; I desire their salvation. When you say this prayer, with a contrite heart and with faith on behalf of some sinner, I will give him the grace of conversion. This is the prayer: 'O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fount of Mercy for us, I trust in You.' " —Jesus to St. Faustina Kowalska, 186-187

Friday of the Thirty-first Week in Ordinary Time

Lectionary: 489
Reading I

Romans 15:14-21

I myself am convinced about you, my brothers and sisters,
that you yourselves are full of goodness,
filled with all knowledge, and able to admonish one another.
But I have written to you rather boldly in some respects to remind you,
because of the grace given me by God
to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles
in performing the priestly service of the Gospel of God,
so that the offering up of the Gentiles may be acceptable,
sanctified by the Holy Spirit.
In Christ Jesus, then, I have reason to boast in what pertains to God.
For I will not dare to speak of anything
except what Christ has accomplished through me
to lead the Gentiles to obedience by word and deed,
by the power of signs and wonders,
by the power of the Spirit of God,
so that from Jerusalem all the way around to Illyricum
I have finished preaching the Gospel of Christ.
Thus I aspire to proclaim the Gospel
not where Christ has already been named,
so that I do not build on another's foundation,
but as it is written:

Those who have never been told of him shall see,

and those who have never heard of him shall understand.

Responsorial Psalm

Psalm 98:1, 2-3ab, 3cd-4

R. (see 2b) The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power.
Sing to the LORD a new song,

for he has done wondrous deeds;
His right hand has won victory for him,

his holy arm.

R. The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power.
The LORD has made his salvation known:

in the sight of the nations he has revealed his justice.
He has remembered his kindness and his faithfulness

toward the house of Israel.

R. The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power.
All the ends of the earth have seen

the salvation by our God.
Sing joyfully to the LORD, all you lands;

break into song; sing praise.

R. The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power.

Alleluia

1 John 2:5

R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Whoever keeps the word of Christ,
the love of God is truly perfected in him.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel

Luke 16:1-8

Jesus said to his disciples, "A rich man had a steward
who was reported to him for squandering his property.
He summoned him and said,
'What is this I hear about you?
Prepare a full account of your stewardship,
because you can no longer be my steward.'
The steward said to himself, 'What shall I do,
now that my master is taking the position of steward away from me?
I am not strong enough to dig and I am ashamed to beg.
I know what I shall do so that,
when I am removed from the stewardship,
they may welcome me into their homes.'
He called in his master's debtors one by one.
To the first he said, 'How much do you owe my master?'
He replied, 'One hundred measures of olive oil.'
He said to him, 'Here is your promissory note.
Sit down and quickly write one for fifty.'
Then to another he said, 'And you, how much do you owe?'
He replied, 'One hundred measures of wheat.'

He said to him, 'Here is your promissory note;
write one for eighty.'
And the master commended that dishonest steward for acting prudently.
For the children of this world
are more prudent in dealing with their own generation
than the children of light."

Daily Meditation: Romans 15:14-21

I myself am convinced about you. (Romans 15:14)

Always eager to reach people with the gospel, Paul boldly enlisted the help of the Christians in Rome. Even before he had met them, he appealed to their "goodness" to ask for their assistance (Romans 15:14). He didn't know them, but he was confident that their relationship with the Lord would move them to help him.

Do you believe Paul would be just as confident in your goodness, even if you feel you still have a long way to go? If you doubt it, take inspiration from yet another everyday person, who lived eighteen centuries later.

Wu Guosheng (1768–1814) lived in the Guizhou Province of China, where he was a hardworking extroverted innkeeper. When one of his guests shared the gospel with him, Wu Guosheng immediately began to change his beliefs and habits. His strong personality, however, made him overbearing as he tried to convince his guests to turn their lives over to Jesus.

Before long, a missionary priest arrived, who saw in Wu the goodness that Paul saw in the Romans. He befriended the innkeeper and began showing him how a gentler approach was more attractive and fruitful. He also baptized Wu and gave him the name Peter.

Peter Wu Guosheng is credited with bringing more than six hundred people to the Lord. But his efforts also brought the attention of the authorities, who considered the Catholic faith a threat. Wu was jailed in April of 1814 during a wave of persecution, but that didn't stop him. For months, he led fellow prisoners in prayer and song and wrote letters of encouragement to his wife. Then on November 7, when he refused to renounce his faith, he was killed in a mock crucifixion.

It's easy to think of the saints as unapproachable heroes, but Peter Wu Guosheng was just an ordinary enthusiastic man. He stood out only because he let the Spirit fill him and redirect the "goodness" God had already given him (Romans 15:14).

Can you let the Spirit do something similar in you? Can you surrender to him the goodness and the desire to serve God that are already in your heart—even if it feels like it's just a tiny flame? Every day invite him in. Let him gradually turn you into the "ordinary saint" God has called you to be!

"Come, Holy Spirit, and fill me with your power and your joy!"

From today's Holy Gospel:

"....Sit down and quickly write one for fifty.'
Then to another he said, 'And you, how much do you owe?'
He replied, 'One hundred measures of wheat.'

He said to him, 'Here is your promissory note;
write one for eighty.'
And the master commended that dishonest steward for acting prudently.
For the children of this world
are more prudent in dealing with their own generation
than the children of light....."

We are more prudent in dealing with our own generation more than children of light?
Is it true?
And why is the steward commended after giving discounts with someone else's money?

Because he was able to satisfy both parties to an extent rather than squandering in totality everything for both parties.
This reminds me of the parable of the talents that were given to 3 different people to invest while the master came back, one did great, the other did an alright job, but the third squandered the opportunity.
Guess what?
This is your shot.
This life given to you, is your shot with dealing with God's gifts.
You know what gifts they are. They can be your talents, your treasures, your kids even, everything is a gift.
And how do we invest it into God's Kingdom? How do we multiply the gifts?

For talent, you can teach others. For treasures, you can help others grow. For kids, you can devote them and offer them to the Lord in every sense of the word while you lead the way.

What if you have none of the above? Suffering? Tribulations? Those are phenomenal gifts too, things to offer, things to grow fruit from.

Perhaps what is being commended though, is mercy. Mercy for all parties, a last resort for some, but it should be our first.
Mercy produces love. Mercy should produce appreciation. Mercy deserves divine accolades, a rejoicing in Heaven occurs, like when a sinner repents.
Do people owe the master? What can you do? Make a deal? What enticements do you use? Is this a form of bribing? Is this related to when our Lord said "make friends with dishonest wealth?". The only dishonesty though, was a break, a mercy, not necessarily a bribe, but a meeting and agreement to pay up...and this payment is a surrender to the Master...because we do owe Him everything.
