† Quote of the Day "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. And even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you." — St. Martha (John 11: 21-22) Today's Meditation "My great God, you know all that is in the universe, because you yourself have made it. It is the very work of your hands. You are omniscient, because you are omnicreative. You know each part, however minute, as perfectly as you know the whole. You know mind as perfectly as you know matter. You know the thoughts and purposes of every soul as perfectly as if there were no other soul in the whole of your creation. You know me through and through; all my present, past, and future are before you as one whole. You see all those delicate and evanescent motions of my thought which altogether escape myself. You can trace every act, whether deed or thought, to its origin and can follow it into its whole growth and consequences. You know how it will be with me at the end; you have before you that hour when I shall come to you to be judged. How awful is the prospect of finding myself in the presence of my judge! Yet, O Lord, I would not that you should not know me. It is my greatest stay to know that you read my heart. Oh, give me more of that openhearted sincerity which I have desired. Keep me ever from being afraid of your eye, from the inward consciousness that I am not honestly trying to please you. Teach me to love you more, and then I shall be at peace, without any fear of you at all." —St. John Henry Newman, p.150 Daily Verse "Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Laz′arus...[Jesus] cried with a loud voice, 'Laz′arus, come out.' The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with bandages, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, 'Unbind him, and let him go.'" — John 11:5 &43-44 | Sts Martha Mary And Lazarus St. Martha (1st c.) was a pious Jewish woman from Bethany near Jerusalem. She was a close friend of Jesus during his earthly ministry, as was her brother, St. Lazarus, and her sister, St. Mary of Bethany (St. Mary Magdalene - separate feast day on July 22nd). The Gospels tell us that "Jesus loved Martha, and her sister Mary and Lazarus." Martha would serve the Lord faithfully when he was a guest in her home, once busying herself so much with her work that she neglected to spend time enjoying his presence, for which she earned a gentle rebuke from Our Lord. Martha had great faith in Christ, especially evidenced in her belief that he could raise her brother Lazarus from the dead. In the Gospels we read that St. Martha testified that Jesus was the Son of God even before his Passion and Resurrection. According to tradition, after the Ascension of Jesus into heaven, St. Martha gathered a group of women together to live, pray, and do penance in common, one of the early Christian houses of consecrated women. St. Martha is the patron of servers, maids, butlers, servants, single laywomen, homemakers, housewives, and cooks. Together, these siblings share a feast day on July 29th. Anyone who wished to consult the LORD would go to this meeting tent outside the camp. Whenever Moses went out to the tent, the people would all rise and stand at the entrance of their own tents, watching Moses until he entered the tent. As Moses entered the tent, the column of cloud would come down and stand at its entrance while the LORD spoke with Moses. On seeing the column of cloud stand at the entrance of the tent, all the people would rise and worship at the entrance of their own tents. The LORD used to speak to Moses face to face, as one man speaks to another. Moses would then return to the camp, but his young assistant, Joshua, son of Nun, would not move out of the tent. Moses stood there with the LORD and proclaimed his name, "LORD." Thus the LORD passed before him and cried out, "The LORD, the LORD, a merciful and gracious God, slow to anger and rich in kindness and fidelity, continuing his kindness for a thousand generations, and forgiving wickedness and crime and sin; yet not declaring the guilty guiltless, but punishing children and grandchildren to the third and fourth generation for their fathers' wickedness!" Moses at once bowed down to the ground in worship. Then he said, "If I find favor with you, O LORD, do come along in our company. This is indeed a stiff-necked people; yet pardon our wickedness and sins, and receive us as your own." So Moses stayed there with the LORD for forty days and forty nights, without eating any food or drinking any water, and he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the ten commandments. Responsorial Psalm Psalm 103:6-7, 8-9, 10-11, 12-13 R. (8a) The Lord is kind and merciful. The LORD secures justice and the rights of all the oppressed. He has made known his ways to Moses, and his deeds to the children of Israel. R. The Lord is kind and merciful. Merciful and gracious is the LORD, slow to anger and abounding in kindness. He will not always chide, nor does he keep his wrath forever. R. The Lord is kind and merciful. Not according to our sins does he deal with us, nor does he requite us according to our crimes. For as the heavens are high above the earth, so surpassing is his kindness toward those who fear him. R. The Lord is kind and merciful. As far as the east is from the west, so far has he put our transgressions from us. As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him. R. The Lord is kind and merciful. Alleluia John 8:12 R. Alleluia, alleluia. I am the light of the world, says the Lord; whoever follows me will have the light of life. R. Alleluia, alleluia. Gospel John 11:19-27 Many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother [Lazarus, who had died]. When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him; but Mary sat at home. Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you." Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise." Martha said to him, "I know he will rise, in the resurrection on the last day." Jesus told her, "I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and anyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?" She said to him, "Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who is coming into the world." or Luke 10:38-42 Jesus entered a village where a woman whose name was Martha welcomed him. She had a sister named Mary who sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak. Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving? Tell her to help me." The Lord said to her in reply, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her." | Praise to You Oh Lord Jesus Christ! | Daily Meditation: John 11:19-27 Martha . . . went to meet him. (John 11:20) Today's feast celebrates a family—Martha, Mary, and Lazarus—who were united in their devotion to Jesus. But that doesn't mean their relationships were picture-perfect. They had very different personalities, and like any family, they had times when they let their differences divide them. But Jesus worked through these differences to form each of them into the disciple he wanted them to be. And that's a good reason to celebrate them! Take Martha. The first time we meet her and her sister in the Gospels, she is annoyed that, instead of helping with hostess duties, Mary is just sitting at Jesus' feet and listening to him (Luke 10:38-42). Yet in today's reading—which takes place right after her brother, Lazarus, has died—Martha rushes out to meet Jesus as soon as she hears he has come (John 11:20). Would she have been as eager to leave the mourners had she not come to understand that Mary's devotion to Jesus was "the better part" (Luke 10:42)? That's the blessing of family life! Each person influences everyone else with their unique gifts and personalities. God can use even our differences to smooth out our rough edges. Martha would not have been the woman she was without her siblings. The same goes for Mary and Lazarus. Their lives, even when they rubbed each other the wrong way, were intertwined. When they opened their home to Jesus, they shared the good and the bad with him, and even their conflicts brought them closer to the Lord. When you look at your own family, things may not seem quite so saintly. Don't lose heart! The Lord knows we all have relationship difficulties at times. We have all experienced grief or pain in our families. But on today's feast, ask Jesus how he wants these relationships to make you the person he wants you to be. Invite him to be present in your family. Ask him to reveal himself through each member of your family as he draws all of you closer to himself. "Jesus, help me treasure my family. Come, Lord, and make us holy!" Jesus told her, "I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and anyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?"..... Word of the Lord! | From Bishop Barron: "Coming to Lazarus's tomb, Jesus feels the deepest emotions and begins to weep. This is God entering into the darkness, confusion, and agony of the death of sinners. He doesn't blithely stand above our situation but rather takes it on and feels it at its deepest level." end quote. "Martha and Mary are icons of the power of faith and love, inseparably united, which leads to the trust they both have in Jesus. Trust is faith and hope intertwined by love. It is good that we analyze in whom we place our trust, and in the strength of that trust." end quote from Friar Juan José de León Lastra O.P. Our Lord said, "...anyone who lives and believes in me will never die...", and then He asks if we believe this. But let's stop, because 95% of us will say we believe, but watch out, what are we saying we believe? About not dying? Ok, you are right, but that's not all our Lord said. He said "Anyone Who LIVES" in Him will not die. What's that all about? To live and to believe in Him. How do we live in Him? Mother Mary is the prime mortal example, although she was created without sin. She lived in Him, although we say, He lived in her. Before time, she lived in Him. How is that? What does this mean? She lived in His holy will. He is our dwelling place. Artificial Intelligence said: "The concept of "dwelling in the Lord" or "dwelling in the house of the Lord" is a common theme in the Bible, particularly in the Psalms. It signifies a close, abiding relationship with God, not necessarily a physical location, but a spiritual state of being. Several verses emphasize the desire to be in God's presence, to find refuge and security in Him, and to experience His goodness and love." You know, that is a pretty good explanation of what I was about to say in my own words. To abide in Him, is to live in Him. To be with Him is to be in Him. And the funny thing is He wants to abide in you. He wants to live in you. This is what I was telling the nursing home elderly, but it applies to all souls. Can you imagine abiding, this living in each other? That is Heaven. I am getting this from tons of volumes I've been listening to in the Book of Heaven. So our Lord told Martha, remember, the one who is anxious and worried about many things? He told her to settle her soul...once again, to believe. And this time, He relieves her anxiety again, and brings her brother, and his friend, back to life from the dead. And after many days of being in the tomb, our Lord tells Lazarus to come out. The dead come alive at the command of our Lord. You see, the command is more than an invitation. I would be careful at ignoring the invitations of our Lord. I say this because I am starting to get many rejections at inviting men to the coming cursillo for men in english. Pray for us. The harvest is plenty, the laborers are few....very few positive responses. Very few means the gate is narrow. Very few means the world needs more light.
