"If favored souls are sometimes sensibly conscious of the presence of the Blessed Sacrament in our churches, how much more must holy Joseph, whose spiritual senses were so delicate and refined, have felt his heart burn within him with divine charity, from the nearness of Him who now dwelt in Mary as His living tabernacle!" —Edward Healy Thompson, p. 168

St. Benjamin

St. Benjamin (d. 424 A.D.) was a deacon martyred in Persia during a forty-year-long Christian persecution under two tyrannical Persian kings. He was imprisoned for a year due to his Christian faith and then released with the help of the Eastern Roman Emperor Theodosius II. As a condition of his release he was ordered to no longer publicly proclaim his faith. Benjamin declared that it was his duty to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ and he refused to be silenced. He continued preaching Christ crucified, and, when word reached the king, he was arrested again. In response, Benjamin asked the king what opinion he would have of any of his subjects if they were to renounce their allegiance to the king and join in war against him; in the same way Benjamin could not renounce his allegiance to Christ. This comment enraged the king, and he ordered Benjamin to endure cruel tortures. Sharpened reeds were repeatedly jammed underneath his fingernails, toenails, and other tender parts of the body. He died when a knotted stake was jammed into his bowels. St. Benjamin's feast day is celebrated on March 31st.

Monday of the Fourth Week of Lent

Reading I Isaiah 65:17-21

Thus says the LORD:
Lo, I am about to create new heavens

and a new earth;
The things of the past shall not be remembered

or come to mind.
Instead, there shall always be rejoicing and happiness

in what I create;
For I create Jerusalem to be a joy

and its people to be a delight;
I will rejoice in Jerusalem

and exult in my people.
No longer shall the sound of weeping be heard there,

or the sound of crying;
No longer shall there be in it

an infant who lives but a few days,

or an old man who does not round out his full lifetime;
He dies a mere youth who reaches but a hundred years,

and he who fails of a hundred shall be thought accursed.
They shall live in the houses they build,

and eat the fruit of the vineyards they plant.

Responsorial Psalm Psalm 30:2 and 4, 5-6, 11-12a and 13b

R. (2a) I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me.
I will extol you, O LORD, for you drew me clear

and did not let my enemies rejoice over me.
O LORD, you brought me up from the nether world;

you preserved me from among those going down into the pit.
R. I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me.
Sing praise to the LORD, you his faithful ones,

and give thanks to his holy name.
For his anger lasts but a moment;

a lifetime, his good will.
At nightfall, weeping enters in,

but with the dawn, rejoicing.
R. I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me.
"Hear, O LORD, and have pity on me;

O LORD, be my helper."
You changed my mourning into dancing;

O LORD, my God, forever will I give you thanks.
R. I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me.

Verse before the Gospel Amos 5:14

Seek good and not evil so that you may live,
and the LORD will be with you.

Gospel John 4:43-54

At that time Jesus left [Samaria] for Galilee.
For Jesus himself testified
that a prophet has no honor in his native place.
When he came into Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him,
since they had seen all he had done in Jerusalem at the feast;
for they themselves had gone to the feast.
Then he returned to Cana in Galilee,
where he had made the water wine.
Now there was a royal official whose son was ill in Capernaum.
When he heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea,
he went to him and asked him to come down
and heal his son, who was near death.
Jesus said to him,
"Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will not believe."
The royal official said to him,
"Sir, come down before my child dies."
Jesus said to him, "You may go; your son will live."
The man believed what Jesus said to him and left.
While the man was on his way back,
his slaves met him and told him that his boy would live.
He asked them when he began to recover.
They told him,
"The fever left him yesterday, about one in the afternoon."
The father realized that just at that time Jesus had said to him,
"Your son will live,"
and he and his whole household came to believe.
Now this was the second sign Jesus did
when he came to Galilee from Judea.

Daily Meditation: Isaiah 65:17-21

The things of the past shall not be remembered or come to mind. (Isaiah 65:17)

Today's first reading comes from a time of restoration and rebuilding for the Israelites. After years in exile, the people have returned to their land. Now the Lord promises that he will "create Jerusalem to be a joy and its people to be a delight" (Isaiah 65:19). He even promises to "create new heavens and a new earth" for them (65:17)!

These are astonishing words, given the many instances of Israel's unfaithfulness. Up to this point, God's people have made so many compromises for the sake of worldly gain that they had fallen into the sin of idolatry. Yet the Lord is willing to blot out every sin from their past, restore them to their land, and rebuild their Temple. It strains the imagination, so great is his mercy toward them.

This passage reveals an amazing truth about our God: he is willing to forgive—and forget—even the gravest of sins! Yet, try as we may, we often hold on to our memories and our guilt over past wrongdoing—even after we have repented. This can be a huge obstacle to receiving the free gift of God's mercy.

If this is something you struggle with, ask yourself: Why is God so willing to forget the past and wipe the slate clean? And why does he want to turn the page and begin a new chapter with us? The answer is that he deeply desires a relationship with us. Because he wants to be close to you, he is willing to forgive and forget all your sins, no matter what you have done in the past—or even what you will do in the future!

If God chooses not to focus on your past, why should you? Just as the Lord was eager to begin again with the Israelites, so he is with you. So let today be a new day—free from the pain of the past—to drink from the deep well of God's endless love and mercy!

"Lord God, give me the grace to put the past behind me so that my relationship with you can only deepen."

Psalm 30:2, 4-6, 11-13
John 4:43-54

From today's Holy Gospel:

"Jesus said to him,
"Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will not believe."
The royal official said to him,
"Sir, come down before my child dies."
Jesus said to him, "You may go; your son will live."
The man believed what Jesus said to him and left....." - Word of the Lord!

From Roberto Juarez:
"On the way home, the official receives the news that his son has been healed at the very moment Jesus declared him healed. This strengthens his faith and that of his entire family. The miracle not only healed the son, but led to a profound conversion of the entire household. How can I strengthen my faith and help others believe in God's power?

• Do I trust God's word even when I don't see immediate changes in my life?

• How do I react to the tests? Do I despair or do I keep my faith?

• Do I bear witness of the miracles and blessings God has done in my life?

'Lord
Help me to trust your word,
even if you don't see the results right away.
Increase my faith so that I do not depend on signs,
but of the certainty of your love and your power.
May my testimony help others to believe in You.
Amen.'
......." end quote Roberto Juarez.

From Bishop Barron:

"Theologian Paul Tillich said that "faith" is the most misunderstood word in the religious vocabulary. And this is a tragedy, for faith stands at the very heart of the program; it is the sine qua non of the Christian thing. What is it? The opening line of Hebrews 11 has the right definition: "Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen."
Faith is a straining ahead toward those things that are, at best, dimly glimpsed. But notice, please, that it is not a craven, hand-wringing, unsure business. It is confident and full of conviction. Think of the great figures of faith, from Abraham to John Paul II: they are anything but shaky, indefinite, questioning people. Like the royal official, they are clear, focused, assured....." end quote.

From brother Adrian:
We got to admit, faith can be hard, right?

What is faith again? "The assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen", right?
It is not, then, about getting always what we want. It is about our belief in God! Amen? I don't always get what I want, and thank God, because sometimes, I don't know really what I need, I don't really know what I am asking for!

But, as I grow in faith, I start to see what and how to pray, a little more clearly. And a mature saint prays in the will of God. This is a difficult mastering of mind, body, and soul. To me, it is still not clear, but, I can see that praying in God's will involves a surrender like no other, a faith like no other, a belief, an assurance, like a child expects of a father, or a mother that is all loving and all giving. Like the child caught under a building after an earthquake, as he told his classmates "don't worry, my father will find us". And the father did find them after much effort of practically hand digging day and night for days after most others had given up.
Be rest assured of our Father in Heaven's love for us.
Be rest assured, that your pleading prayers are heard. Take heart, and do not doubt, for doubt is what brought evil into the world. Doubt God's will and chaos soon ensues.
Therefore, let us pray into His Divine Will. The boy's father never doubted for once, He knew that Jesus would heal, however it may be. And don't we all need healing, for self or others? I ask this to the youth and they look at me perplexed. They don't experience sickness or death like someone like me with so many people I know who are sick or have passed, to the tune of perhaps hundreds of funerals that I have helped in. I was watching a video of my eldest daughter quinceanera for the first time in 5 years, and immediately we noticed my dad, who recently passed, and my aunt recently passed singing in the video, and my brother in law who passed in the COVID pandemic too. So many things have passed in the past 5 years. How are we sill moving forward?

Faith. We are assured, that if we believe, God will take care of us, and my hope is that we take care of Our Father's business, that is, the Kingdom of Our Father in Heaven.

† Quote of the Day

"It is part of the discipline of God to make His loved ones perfect through trial and suffering. Only by carrying the Cross can one reach the Resurrection." — Fulton Sheen

Today's Meditation

"Each of us must come to the evening of life. Each of us must enter on eternity. Each of us must come to that quiet, awful time, when we will appear before the Lord of the vineyard, and answer for the deeds done in the body, whether they be good or bad. That, my dear brethren, you will have to undergo. ... It will be the dread moment of expectation when your fate for eternity is in the balance, and when you are about to be sent forth as the companion of either saints or devils, without possibility of change. There can be no change; there can be no reversal. As that judgment decides it, so it will be for ever and ever. Such is the particular judgment. ... when we find ourselves by ourselves, one by one, in his presence, and have brought before us most vividly all the thoughts, words, and deeds of this past life. Who will be able to bear the sight of himself? And yet we shall be obliged steadily to confront ourselves and to see ourselves. In this life we shrink from knowing our real selves. We do not like to know how sinful we are. We love those who prophecy smooth things to us, and we are angry with those who tell us of our faults. But on that day, not one fault only, but all the secret, as well as evident, defects of our character will be clearly brought out. We shall see what we feared to see here, and much more. And then, when the full sight of ourselves comes to us, who will not wish that he had known more of himself here, rather than leaving it for the inevitable day to reveal it all to him!" —Saint John Henry Newman, p. 101

St. Conon Of Naso

St. Conon of Naso (1139–1236) was a wealthy nobleman, the son of a Count, from Naso, Italy. He was a devout young man, and at the age of 15 become a monk. He lived as a hermit until being called to serve the local monastery as its abbot. Upon the death of his parents he distributed his inheritance to the poor. While on pilgrimage to Jerusalem he had a vision of a priest he knew being choked by a snake. Conan raced to the priest to warn him of the danger. The priest's heart was convicted by the truth of the vision and confessed that he was hoarding money and neglecting the poor. Under Conan's direction the priest gave his excessive savings to the poor and recommitted his life to serving others. After his death, Conon was hailed as a miracle worker. The city of Naso experienced a series of terrible storms which destroyed crops and disrupted the shipping trade, and the city ran out of grain and other food supplies. When the famine became severe, St. Conon appeared in a vision to a ship captain who was preparing to transport a load of grain. Conon told the captain to change course and take the grain to Naso. The captain obeyed the vision and arrived in Naso with food to relieve the famine. St. Conon's feast day is March 28th.

Friday of the Third Week of Lent

Reading 1 Hosea 14:2-10

Thus says the LORD:
Return, O Israel, to the LORD, your God;
you have collapsed through your guilt.
Take with you words,
and return to the LORD;
Say to him, "Forgive all iniquity,
and receive what is good, that we may render
as offerings the bullocks from our stalls.
Assyria will not save us,
nor shall we have horses to mount;
We shall say no more, 'Our god,'
to the work of our hands;
for in you the orphan finds compassion."

I will heal their defection, says the LORD,
I will love them freely;
for my wrath is turned away from them.
I will be like the dew for Israel:
he shall blossom like the lily;
He shall strike root like the Lebanon cedar,
and put forth his shoots.
His splendor shall be like the olive tree
and his fragrance like the Lebanon cedar.
Again they shall dwell in his shade
and raise grain;
They shall blossom like the vine,
and his fame shall be like the wine of Lebanon.

Ephraim! What more has he to do with idols?
I have humbled him, but I will prosper him.
"I am like a verdant cypress tree"–
Because of me you bear fruit!

Let him who is wise understand these things;
let him who is prudent know them.
Straight are the paths of the LORD,
in them the just walk,
but sinners stumble in them.

Responsorial Psalm Psalm 81:6c-8a, 8bc-9, 10-11ab, 14 and 17

R. (see 11 and 9a) I am the Lord your God: hear my voice.
An unfamiliar speech I hear:
"I relieved his shoulder of the burden;
his hands were freed from the basket.
In distress you called, and I rescued you."

R. I am the Lord your God: hear my voice.
"Unseen, I answered you in thunder;
I tested you at the waters of Meribah.
Hear, my people, and I will admonish you;
O Israel, will you not hear me?"

R. I am the Lord your God: hear my voice.
"There shall be no strange god among you

nor shall you worship any alien god.
I, the LORD, am your God
who led you forth from the land of Egypt."

R. I am the Lord your God: hear my voice.
"If only my people would hear me,
and Israel walk in my ways,
I would feed them with the best of wheat,
and with honey from the rock I would fill them."

R. I am the Lord your God: hear my voice.

Verse Before the Gospel Matthew 4:17

Repent, says the Lord;
the Kingdom of heaven is at hand.

Gospel Mark 12:28-34

One of the scribes came to Jesus and asked him,
"Which is the first of all the commandments?"
Jesus replied, "The first is this:
Hear, O Israel!
The Lord our God is Lord alone!
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart,
with all your soul,
with all your mind,
and with all your strength.
The second is this:
You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
There is no other commandment greater than these."
The scribe said to him, "Well said, teacher.
You are right in saying,
He is One and there is no other than he.
And to love him with all your heart,
with all your understanding,
with all your strength,
and to love your neighbor as yourself
is worth more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices."
And when Jesus saw that he answered with understanding,
he said to him,
"You are not far from the Kingdom of God."
And no one dared to ask him any more questions.

Daily Meditation: Hosea 14:2-10

Return, O Israel, to the Lord, your God. (Hosea 14:2)

Few things are more painful than the betrayal of an unfaithful spouse. That's why the Book of Hosea is especially moving: it portrays God's relationship with Israel through Hosea's heartbreaking marriage. Through Hosea's unbending love for his adulterous wife, God reveals his unchanging covenant love for unfaithful Israel. "Return to the Lord," he pleads over and over again (Hosea 14:3).

Today, just as in Hosea's time, God continues to plead with his people to come back to him. Since Lent is all about God's call to come home, let's listen for his voice in the words of Hosea.

You have collapsed through your guilt (14:2). We all know how oppressive the burden of guilt can be. Even if we try to gloss over our offenses, unrepented sin can weigh us down like a heavy chain tangled around us. Sometimes we even carry guilt over sins we have already confessed. Still, our faithful God calls to us, Return to me! Let me lift this weight that exhausts you and drags you down.

Take with you words (14:3). God knows that repenting of our sins is the first step toward freedom. Consciously naming them before him is the best way to bring them into the light, where he can free us. Our words of repentance, whether spoken in the confessional or in the silence of our hearts at prayer, have the power to unlock the chains that have dragged us down. It's not always easy, though, to find the right words. But that doesn't matter to the Lord. Just say whatever comes to your heart. Return to me! God implores. I am ready to forgive.

I will heal their defection (14:5). Not only will God forgive us, but he promises to gradually heal us of the urges and drives that cause us to sin. Every time we turn to him and encounter his love, our hearts melt a little bit more, and we find it a little bit easier to act out of love instead of selfishness. Can you hear him crying out? Return to me! Come and be healed!

"Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, have mercy on me, a sinner!"

Psalm 81:6-11, 14, 17
Mark 12:28-34

From Roberto Juarez:
"The scribe recognizes that loving God and neighbor is more important than external sacrifices and rituals.
Jesus says to him: "You are not far from the Kingdom of God", because he has understood the essentials.
Is my faith based only on external practices or on a true loving relationship with God and others?

• Do I love God with my whole being, or are there things that take His place in my heart?

• Is my love for God reflected in love for others, even those I find hard to accept?
• Do I understand that true worship of God is to live love in every action?

'Lord
Teach me to love you with all my heart
To put you at the center of my life
and to reflect your love in my dealings with others.
May my faith not be just words,
but an authentic dedication to You and to my brothers and sisters.
Amen'........" end quote Roberto Juarez.

From a Spanish Friar: Fray Manuel Santos Sánchez O.P:

"Which commandment is the first of all?
The question and answer of this gospel is well known to us. The important thing is that love of God and love of neighbor are inseparable. You don't love God if you don't love your neighbor. You don't love your neighbor if you don't love God.
Our temptation is to see them separated. That is why Jesus insists so much on their union. This union is one of the most genuine of our Christianity. I don't know if I'm right, but it seems to me that it's easier for all of us to love God than it is to love our brothers and sisters, our neighbors.
As in everyone, here too, without Jesus' help, "without me you can do nothing," we are unable to live and keep these commandments. We already know, ask Jesus for his powerful and divine help." end quote.

From brother Adrian:

I Love reading so many daily reflections of the Holy Scriptures, commentaries, and teachers, and as for me, I always try to bring it down to earth, in examples of daily life to see how we can apply and make scriptures real, embodied in the flesh, what comes from the spirit. We read from a new reflection today words that need to be impressed on us all when Friar Manuel Santos said "... love of God and love of neighbor are inseparable."

We cannot go to Church, say we love God, and then come out swinging fists of fury!

Yet, it happens.
We cannot go preaching to the world what is right, and we cannot swallow the pill of humility into our very soul!

Someone asked me "Adrian, how can I show God that I love Him?"
The only thing that is in Scripture, is that we follow His commands, and our Lord says how we can better or more clearly show God we love Him...through our people, whom He calls "neighbor".

I also liked a quote from Mother Teresa that said "the people in the parks, the alcoholics, the homeess, they are looking at you. Do not be those who look and do not see. Look and see."
We must look and see not only with our brains and eyes, but with our heart.
The whole of lent is meant to help us open our eyes. To be stronger in this heart muscle, we must exercise it. There are probably many atheists in Heaven, that knew God better than many Christians who refused to open their hearts to the poor, many of which are addicts, many of which are unforgivable, many of which are outcasts, many of which are those whom we have chosen to cast out of our lives.
And there, in their heart...also lives the living God.

Now, down to the example that I need to give, many times I catch heat because of what I say, but here we go the purpose of my 2 cents. Yesterday, an alcoholic and drug addict relative, that says he is no longer living the horrible ways, and is now trying hard to prove it by coming around his estranged family and helping them pay bills, said he wanted an old motor-home RV I just bought because I thought it was a great deal. I intended to refurbish it and sell it or use it because it runs really nice. But, something also told me that it'd probably go to this loved one deep down, although, I didn't want to throw it out there, because I've already bought him an RV to get off the streets.

Well, he hit me up for it, said he wanted it. I said OK, although, not cheerfully, because I know what is coming from experience, he will want to pay it in small payments, many of which he will drag on and postpone for who knows how long, so in essence it is a high risk...love offering, LOL. He begged I deliver it because his license has issues. I didn't want to yesterday, it was late, he didn't bother asking early like I told him. I reluctantly took it though, squeezed it in the back of an alley where I saw for the first time where he was staying, a truck camper, about 8 foot long, living there for over a year. Then he says he wants to give that camper to a black man living in his truck for over 3 years. This began to open my eyes, "so there is more to it than I thought, more people are benefiting from this purchase I had no idea why I did in the first place".
Am I amazed that all this happened? Yes, again. Did I get a really good warm fuzzy feeling out of it? No. But, at this point, it is not about feelings anymore. I do things, thank God I was a part of it, and my only regret is perhaps not seeming more cheerful, but deep down inside...I am glad. I told my son that traveled with me, "you see son, we wanted to fix up this motorhome for us to enjoy once or twice a year, but this man is going to live in it all year long, and is extremely excited about it". My boy smiled "yeah, you're right" and the gift becomes a love offering.

Lord, thank you for opening our hearts and our eyes...if only we say yes to You.
