–Isaiah 25:1 |  click to read more | | †St. Augustine of Canterbury St. Augustine of Canterbury (d. 604 A.D.), also known as St. Austin, was prior of a monastery in Rome before being called by Pope Gregory the Great to be a missionary to the British Isles. The Pope received word that the pagans of Britain would embrace the faith in great numbers if priests were sent to teach them, and previous missionaries had been unsuccessfu in the holy endeavor. In order to realize the Holy Father's desire to evangelize the island, Augustine set out on a new quest at the head of forty monks in 596 A.D. When they arrived in France they heard stories of the ferocity of the Anglo-Saxons. Out of fear, Augustine returned to Rome and asked the Pope to release him from the mission. Pope Gregory encouraged Augustine in his task and sent him back. When the monks landed in Kent they were treated kindly. The King of Kent himself accepted baptism and set up a residence for St. Augustine in Canterbury. There Augustine established a church and monastery as the center of his apostolic mission. Although his labor among the pagans was slow and difficult, his work bore much fruit and England eventually became a Christian nation. Augustine was the first Archbishop of Canterbury, England, and is known as the "Apostle of England." He settled there for a year and a half
and taught the word of God among them. But when Gallio was proconsul of Achaia,
the Jews rose up together against Paul
and brought him to the tribunal, saying,
"This man is inducing people to worship God contrary to the law."
When Paul was about to reply, Gallio spoke to the Jews,
"If it were a matter of some crime or malicious fraud,
I should with reason hear the complaint of you Jews;
but since it is a question of arguments over doctrine and titles
and your own law, see to it yourselves.
I do not wish to be a judge of such matters."
And he drove them away from the tribunal.
They all seized Sosthenes, the synagogue official,
and beat him in full view of the tribunal.
But none of this was of concern to Gallio. Paul remained for quite some time,
and after saying farewell to the brothers he sailed for Syria,
together with Priscilla and Aquila.

whatever you ask the Father in my name he will give you." | Daily Meditation: Acts 18:9-18 Do not be afraid . . . , for I am with you. (Acts 18:9, 10) God spoke these words to the apostle Paul in a vision he had while he was in Corinth. Paul had barely escaped death several times, and his life in Corinth would not be trouble-free. But the Lord encouraged him to settle down for an extended stay with this young church without fear because "I am with you" (Acts 18:10). Not long after, as he stood before the tribunal in Corinth, Paul surely had to remember the Lord's promise to him in order to remain peaceful! Again and again in Scripture, we find this stirring message: "Do not be afraid." Often, God says it to someone he's calling to take up a new challenge: when he invited Abraham to enter into a covenant with him, when he called Moses to rescue his people from slavery, when he anointed Isaiah as a prophet, and when he chose Mary to bear the Messiah and chose Joseph to protect the holy infant. Most of these individuals reacted as we probably would: "Who, me?" Or even, "Not me! There must be some mistake." But God's response is always the same: "Do not fear: I am with you; do not be anxious: I am your God" (Isaiah 41:10). Our shortcomings are real, but they aren't the final word. God promises that his power can be made perfect in our weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). We might feel afraid when we focus on unfamiliar circumstances or looming challenges. But that fear subsides as we remember the goodness and power of God. Yes, Jesus promises that one day we will see him again (John 16:22). But even now, he is with us. He has promised to remain with us, and he is able to handle anything that we face. We can find joy and encouragement in Jesus' presence with us through the Scriptures, through the Eucharist, and in one another. Like Paul, we can recall what Jesus has done in our lives and all the ways he has reassured us. We can fix our eyes on him and know that he is with us. And that can dispel our fear. "Jesus, help me to know you are with me." Psalm 47:2-7
John 16:20-23 | From today's 1st Holy Scripture:
""Do not be afraid. Go on speaking, and do not be silent, for I am with you." Too many are afraid to speak. Why am I afraid to speak about God?
It's what's inside that counts. We speak or refrain from speaking because what is inside.
We should learn though...to not be afraid. If something needs to be said, then pray inside your heart on how to let it be said, whether with gentleness or in a firm tone, but first we pray. Be not afraid of the light and letting the light shine. | We pray in Psalms:
"He brings people under us; nations under our feet. He chooses for us our inheritance,
the glory of Jacob, whom he loves God is king of all the earth." | In today's Gospel we heard our Lord:
"Amen, amen, I say to you, you will weep and mourn, while the world rejoices; you will grieve, but your grief will become joy." If I look out into the world, I can see many trying to enjoy themselves: party going, pleasure hunting, everyone trying to make themselves happy. I see people laughing, joking, making time pass by. But is earth really a place to enjoy? What ARE we supposed to be doing? Preparing for the next life, if you are to be honest with yourself. Are you prepared to meet God? | Are your children ready to meet our Maker who is our Father?
What is more important than that? Ask the world and they'll give you all sorts of answers and excuses, and idols, remember...ideologies.
Here, I am reminding you and myself, that we have a priority.
I believe I can get lost, don't we all? Lost in business and busyness. Priorities. As we speak, many are suffering tremendous losses, loved ones, lost lives, lost souls. Weeping, in place of joy. Sadness right now. There is a time for everything but what we need to remember is our own death.
The death that needs to join Christ our Lord on the cross.
We have forever to rejoice with God in Heaven, and there is nothing wrong rejoicing in Him with grace now. But not rejoicing in any sin. We have our work cut out for us.
