St. Francis Borgia (1510-1572) was born in Spain to a noble family, the son of a Duke. On his father's side of the family he was the great-grandson of Pope Alexander VI, one of the notorious "Borgia Popes," and on his mother's side he was the great-grandson of King Ferdinand of Aragon. Francis joined the Spanish court of King Charles V at the age of 18, married, and had 8 children. In 1539 he experienced a profound religious conversion which caused him to renounce the pomp of the royal court, yet he continued his life of public service as the Viceroy of Catalonia. He made great progress in the spiritual life, and after his father's death he became the Duke of Gandia. He built a university and invited the newly-founded Society of Jesus to work in his duchy. After the death of his wife, and after providing for his children, he joined the Jesuits in Rome and was given a prominent position in the order by St. Ignatius of Loyola. Under Francis' leadership and reforms, the Jesuits advanced to such a great extent that he is considered to be their second founder. In the years following Ignatius' death, Francis became head of the order and established Jesuit missions in multiple countries. He also counseled his missionaries in both practical strategies as well as spiritual discipline. St. Francis of Borgia was a celebrated preacher and a key figure in the Counter-Reformation movement. "Friends, our Gospel today is about prayer and the power of prayer. This excerpt from Luke is filled with wisdom in regard to the proper attitude of prayer. What is prayer, and how should we pray? Prayer is intimate communion and conversation with God. Judging from Jesus' own life, prayer is something that we ought to do often, especially at key moments of our lives.
Well, how should we pray? What does it look like? You have to pray with faith. Have you noticed how Jesus says before working a miracle, "Do you believe I can do this?" Can you hear the simple faith in this astonishing line of Jesus: "I tell you, all that you ask for in prayer, believe that you will receive it and it shall be yours."
And today he says, "Ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.. . . ." end of Bishop's quote.

because of his persistence." end quote. Our Lord has given other parables that talk about persistence. We must insist, right? Is that rude? To insist? If we don't insist, people will not move. We must beg at times, especially for conversions. St. Monica chased her son for years and he tried to escape from her by sailing to other countries, and still she found him. And then, years later, he converted and became a Catholic, and one of the greatest saints and doctors of our church. We must therefore, insist in the good. Persist. This is a sign of the Holy Spirit, perseverance, a holy perseverance. That is what we must strive to live in, not just for ourselves, but for the salvation of those around us. For their own good. This is love: to will the good of the other.
And so, our Lord will answer, if it is good, He definitely will answer, but not always how or when we want it to come down. We have our Lord showing us a parable about a neighbor insisting for bread.
God is that bread provider.
Lord, Give us this daily bread! We need bread to give! We need bread for our daily lives, that we might live, with you Jesus our Lord, both now and forever, and with those whom we share this bread daily!
I pray for my loved ones, that they may have Thy bread. I pray that they may be nourished and not dead. I pray Lord, you know who needs our prayers, and I insist to no end, that love and grace touch their lives, that we may find ourselves in that eternal life of grace.
