† ". You Allow Him To. . ."

†Saint Quote
""If a tiny spark of God's love already burns within you, do not expose it to the wind, for it may get blown out… Stay quiet with God. Do not spend your time in useless chatter… Do not give yourself to others so completely that you have nothing left for yourself."
–St. Charles Borromeo

†Today's Meditation
"A spiritual Communion acts on the soul as blowing does on a cinder-covered fire which was about to go out. Whenever you feel your love of God growing cold, quickly make a spiritual Communion.' 'Quickly!' There's a sense of urgency here. The saints are trying to tell us that we should not limit our union with Christ in the Eucharist to sacramental Communion once a week, or even once a day. We need Christ's living presence in our lives moment-by-moment to nourish us and protect us from sin, so we need to renew our union with Him regularly, especially any time we feel ourselves drifting away. Christ is not merely present in the Eucharist during Mass! The Eucharist is an ongoing fulfillment of Christ's Gospel promise to remain with us: 'Behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age' (Mt. 28:20)."

†Daily Verse
"I love thee, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies."
–Psalm 18:1-3

St. Josephine Bakhita

St. Josephine Bakhita (d. 1947) was born into a wealthy Sudanese family near Darfur. She was kidnapped when she was nine years old and forced into slavery. Her kidnappers named her Bakhita ("fortunate" in Arabic). She was sold and resold, beaten and tortured by her "owners" until 1883 when she was purchased by an Italian consul who treated her well. He brought her to Italy to work as a nanny. In 1889, the Italian courts ruled that Bakhita was enslaved illegally and declared her a free woman. She became enamored with the Catholic faith and chose to stay in Italy. Bakhita was baptized in 1890 and received her First Holy Communion from the future Pope St. Pius X. She took the Christian name of Josephine, and in 1896 entered the Institute of Canossian Daughters of Charity. She was affectionately called "Our Black Mother" by the Italians, as her amiable spirit and warm heart won the admiration of many people during her fifty years of religious life. She was known for her charity towards children and the poor, her indomitable spirit during the hardship of slavery, and her joy in religious life. St. Josephine Bakhita is the patron of Sudan, and her feast day, February 8th, has been designated the International Day of Prayer to Stop Human Trafficking.

Tuesday of the Fifth Week in Ordinary Time

Lectionary: 330
Reading I

1 Kgs 8:22-23, 27-30

Solomon stood before the altar of the LORD
in the presence of the whole community of Israel,
and stretching forth his hands toward heaven,
he said, "LORD, God of Israel,
there is no God like you in heaven above or on earth below;
you keep your covenant of mercy with your servants
who are faithful to you with their whole heart.

"Can it indeed be that God dwells on earth?
If the heavens and the highest heavens cannot contain you,
how much less this temple which I have built!
Look kindly on the prayer and petition of your servant, O LORD, my God,
and listen to the cry of supplication which I, your servant,
utter before you this day.
May your eyes watch night and day over this temple,
the place where you have decreed you shall be honored;
may you heed the prayer which I, your servant, offer in this place.
Listen to the petitions of your servant and of your people Israel
which they offer in this place.
Listen from your heavenly dwelling and grant pardon."

Responsorial Psalm

84:3, 4, 5 and 10, 11

R. (2) How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord, mighty God!
My soul yearns and pines

for the courts of the LORD.
My heart and my flesh

cry out for the living God.
R. How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord, mighty God!
Even the sparrow finds a home,

and the swallow a nest

in which she puts her young—
Your altars, O LORD of hosts,

my king and my God!
R. How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord, mighty God!
Blessed they who dwell in your house!

continually they praise you.
O God, behold our shield,

and look upon the face of your anointed.
R. How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord, mighty God!
I had rather one day in your courts

than a thousand elsewhere;
I had rather lie at the threshold of the house of my God

than dwell in the tents of the wicked.
R. How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord, mighty God!

Alleluia

Ps 119:36, 29b

R. Alleluia, alleluia
Incline my heart, O God, to your decrees;
and favor me with your law.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel

Mk 7:1-13

When the Pharisees with some scribes who had come from Jerusalem
gathered around Jesus,
they observed that some of his disciples ate their meals
with unclean, that is, unwashed, hands.
(For the Pharisees and, in fact, all Jews,
do not eat without carefully washing their hands,
keeping the tradition of the elders.
And on coming from the marketplace
they do not eat without purifying themselves.
And there are many other things that they have traditionally observed,
the purification of cups and jugs and kettles and beds.)
So the Pharisees and scribes questioned him,
"Why do your disciples not follow the tradition of the elders
but instead eat a meal with unclean hands?"

He responded,
"Well did Isaiah prophesy about you hypocrites,
as it is written:

This people honors me with their lips,

but their hearts are far from me;

In vain do they worship me,

teaching as doctrines human precepts.

You disregard God's commandment but cling to human tradition."
He went on to say,
"How well you have set aside the commandment of God
in order to uphold your tradition!
For Moses said,
Honor your father and your mother,
and Whoever curses father or mother shall die.
Yet you say,
'If someone says to father or mother,
"Any support you might have had from me is qorban"'
(meaning, dedicated to God),
you allow him to do nothing more for his father or mother.
You nullify the word of God
in favor of your tradition that you have handed on.
And you do many such things."

Daily Meditation: 1 Kings 8:22-23, 27-30

. . . this temple, the place where you have decreed you shall be honored. (1 Kings 8:29)

From the very beginning, God had promised to dwell with his people. He led them every step of the way out of Egypt, in their wanderings in the wilderness, and as they entered the Promised Land. As they settled in the land of Canaan, the Israelites yearned for a place where the Lord could dwell with them. Finally, when Solomon became king, he built an elaborate and costly temple that served just that purpose. Today's first reading describes the day of the Temple's dedication. How could the creator of heaven and earth dwell in a building, Solomon wondered (1 Kings 8:27). And yet he did!

Solomon and the people stood in awe of the Lord that day. They knew they needed his presence in their midst. They needed a place where they could come to celebrate the way that God had called them to be his own special people. They needed a place where every detail would move them to repentance and worship. They needed a place where they could offer God a sacrifice of praise.

Even though Solomon's Temple stood for hundreds of years, it did not last forever. But our need for God to dwell with us remained. As the apostles pondered the gift of the Holy Spirit that they had received at Pentecost, they began to realize that God had made each and every believer a temple of the Holy Spirit! Our longing for God to dwell with us was fulfilled. The Lord accomplished it; through his death and resurrection, he built this new temple.

You are a temple of the Lord. He has chosen you as his dwelling place. He spared no expense to prepare you to receive his presence. He shed his own blood to cleanse you from sin. He gave you his Holy Spirit and created a new heart in you. Along with Solomon, you might ask, How could the creator of heaven and earth dwell in a human being? How could he live in me? And yet he does! As you let these truths sink into your heart and mind, let praise rise up in you. What a right and fitting response to his extravagant love!

"Almighty God, who am I that you would live in me? I am yours!"

Psalm 84:3-5, 10-11
Mark 7:1-13

From today's 1st Holy Scripture:
""Can it indeed be that God dwells on earth?"

Our Lord dwells...now in us. If we so let Him. And where He dwells, peace dwells. We need peace...we need Him.

psalms

We pray in Psalms:
" How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord, mighty God! Blessed they who dwell in your house! continually they praise you.
O God, behold our shield, and look upon the face of your anointed. How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord, mighty God!"

2cents2

Our Lord speaks in the Holy Gospel:
"Well did Isaiah prophesy about you hypocrites, as it is written: This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me; In vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines human precepts."

What was our Lord talking about? It is a people that turns inward, not outward. He speaks about them making up their own rules, and in doing so, bypass God's rules, and thus, His Holy Will, His desire.

Humility went out the door. And when our Lord came in, they did not accept...humility.
And when they did not accept humility, they did not accept God the Father. It was a harsh and eternal rejection. Yet our Lord spewed mercy out of His heart. And we rely on that mercy for the rest of our lives, for life, for holiness to return to do God's will.

Let's Pray:
Lord, Heavenly Father,
Our world once again has lost humility. There's much bickering and fighting. There's much pride and arrogance. There's much ingratitude. And how can I make a return? How can I atone for this sin? Help us all make a return to accept and not reject You Lord.

from your brother in Christ,
Adrian

Progress report. Yesterday was looking up and today dad calls saying his throat feels like it is closing up. Let us be resolute in our prayers. He is anxious and taking of his oxygen high power mask. I will be with him all day. I will be praying and your prayers today will fill the room. And this is the breath of God.
