†Saint Quote
"Let each of us accept the truth of the following statement and try to make it our most fundamental principle: Christ's teaching will never let us down, while worldly wisdom always will. Christ Himself said that this sort of wisdom was like a house with nothing but sand as its foundation, while His own was like a building with solid rock as its foundation."
–St. Vincent de Paul

†Today's Meditation
"Christians long ago concluded that each individual human being has his or her own particular guardian angel. Though the Church has never defined the teaching about individual guardian angels, the Catechism of the Catholic Church sums up the matter this way, quoting St. Basil: 'From infancy to death human life is surrounded by [the angels'] watchful care and intercession. Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life'. In this light, we can turn to our guardian angels for help in spiritual warfare, especially to resist the temptations of the Enemy. Yet angels are more than guardians; they are also warriors."
— Paul Thigpen, p. 30

St. Andre Bessette

St. Andre Bessette (1845–1937) was born the eighth of twelve children to a poor working class family in Quebec, Canada. He was weak and sickly from his birth. When he was nine, his father died in a lumber accident; when he was twelve, his mother died of tuberculosis. He then worked at various odd jobs until he entered the Congregation of the Holy Cross as a lay brother at age 25, serving as porter for Quebec's Notre Dame College for much of his life. Andre welcomed and prayed for the people he met, especially those who were ill or suffering. When an epidemic of sickness broke out, Andre demonstrated the gift of healing. He gave all the credit to St. Joseph, to whom he had a great devotion. Over the years, when word of his sanctity spread, tens of thousands of people came to Bessette for prayer and healing. He worked all day to receive them in person or answer their letters. When his Order wanted to purchase land on Mt. Royal, Bessette buried St. Joseph medals on the property. The owners yielded, the land was sold to the Order, and Andre worked to have a chapel dedicated to St. Joseph built on the property. It is still in use to this day. When he died at the age of 91, it is said that a million people visited his coffin. St. Andre Bessette's feast day is January 6th.

Reading I

1 Jn 4:19–5:4

Beloved, we love God because
he first loved us.
If anyone says, "I love God,"
but hates his brother, he is a liar;
for whoever does not love a brother whom he has seen
cannot love God whom he has not seen.
This is the commandment we have from him:
Whoever loves God must also love his brother.

Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is begotten by God,
and everyone who loves the Father
loves also the one begotten by him.
In this way we know that we love the children of God
when we love God and obey his commandments.
For the love of God is this,
that we keep his commandments.
And his commandments are not burdensome,
for whoever is begotten by God conquers the world.
And the victory that conquers the world is our faith.

Responsorial Psalm
72:1-2, 14 and 15bc, 17
------------------‐
R. (see 11) Lord, every nation on earth will adore you.
O God, with your judgment endow the king,

and with your justice, the king's son;
He shall govern your people with justice

and your afflicted ones with judgment.
R. Lord, every nation on earth will adore you.
From fraud and violence he shall redeem them,

and precious shall their blood be in his sight.
May they be prayed for continually;

day by day shall they bless him.
R. Lord, every nation on earth will adore you.
May his name be blessed forever;

as long as the sun his name shall remain.
In him shall all the tribes of the earth be blessed;

all the nations shall proclaim his happiness.
R. Lord, every nation on earth will adore you.

Alleluia

Lk 4:18

R. Alleluia, alleluia.
The Lord has sent me to bring glad tidings to the poor
and to proclaim liberty to captives.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel

Lk 4:14-22

Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit,
and news of him spread throughout the whole region.
He taught in their synagogues and was praised by all.

He came to Nazareth, where he had grown up,
and went according to his custom
into the synagogue on the sabbath day.
He stood up to read and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah.
He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written:

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,

because he has anointed me

to bring glad tidings to the poor.

He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives

and recovery of sight to the blind,

to let the oppressed go free,

and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.

Rolling up the scroll, he handed it back to the attendant and sat down,
and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him.
He said to them,
"Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing."
And all spoke highly of him
and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth.

DAILY MEDITATION: 1 JOHN 4:19–5:4
His commandments are not burdensome. (1 John 5:3)

You've probably heard stories about mothers and fathers who have made heroic sacrifices on behalf of their children. Some are well-known, like St. Gianna Molla, who declined cancer treatment to preserve the life of her unborn baby. Many more are hidden, like the weary parent who gets out of bed to soothe a fretful child. You have probably been the beneficiary of such sacrifices; perhaps you've made them yourself.

Why would we make such sacrifices? Love. It's love that makes them easier and the alternative almost unthinkable. When we gaze upon the face of someone we love and see their pain or vulnerability, sacrifice becomes not a burdensome duty but a personal gift. Our hearts are moved, and the burden dissolves.

This principle works beyond our immediate circle of loved ones. If human love can inspire us to give of ourselves in this way, how much more will God's love poured into our hearts expand to people beyond our family and friends! John tells us, "We love God because he first loved us" (1 John 4:19). God's love not only inspires us to love him; it enables us to see everyone with the love he has for them and moves us to love them as he does.

So when you are called to make a personal sacrifice for the sake of someone else—especially if you start to wonder whether you can find enough love within yourself to do it—keep this principle in mind. You might be called to do something dramatic, but more often it's something ordinary: hanging back and letting a more reticent person answer first or accompanying a neighbor to a medical appointment. But whatever it is, the task can become lighter as you see Christ in the other person and love them as he loves them. Look to Jesus and see his love for the people you are called to serve. The burden that comes from feeling like you "should" do something will fade, and you will be more able to freely love them as he does.

God loves the people around us more than we could ever love them. Let that love give you the strength to respond generously to the needs all around you.

"Jesus, let your love flow through me and out to others."

Psalm 72:1-2, 14-15, 17
Luke 4:14-22

From today's 1st Holy Scripture:
"And his commandments are not burdensome,
for whoever is begotten by God conquers the world.
And the victory that conquers the world is our faith."

Faith formation. Faith forms the world. Faith is our lifeline with God. We follow Christ who has conquered the world.

psalms

We pray in Psalms:
_"From fraud and violence he shall redeem them, and precious shall their blood be in his sight.

May they be prayed for continually; day by day shall they bless him. Lord, every nation on earth will adore you "_

Precious blood. Our Lord gave precious blood. Had He not considered the price....of your precious blood? Of course. His children are precious, every last one.

2cents2

We heard in the Gospel today:
"He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight the blind to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord."

Our Lord reads this prophecy and then says "Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing."

To this day it is fulfilled. He sets captives free. He gives sight to the blind and He proclaims a year acceptable to the Lord.

At a men's convention, a man said he gave up his career as a lawyer to help kids that were being sold into slavery in another country.
He has made it his life goal...to set these captives free. What spawned this heroic move? It was our Lord. We are to be the living Body of Christ.

Let's pray:
Lord God, Heavenly Father,
We need Your grace and faith to fulfill Your works.
For healing and salvation.
We pray this day and this year is acceptable to fulfill Your Holy Will...bith now and forever.

I pray for my dad, Martin, to heal fully in Your precious Name...because of Your precious blood...thank You Father in Heaven

from your brother in Christ,
Adrian
