Listen with Your Heart

Our heart is a highly sensitive receiver; it can listen through all our senses. Whatever we hear, but also whatever we see, taste, touch, or smell, vibrates deep down with God's song. To resonate with this song in gratefulness is what I call singing back. This attitude of prayer has given great joy to all my senses and to my heart.

†Saint Quote
"We find ourselves in this earth as in a tempestuous sea, in a desert, in a vale of tears. Now then, Mary is the Star of the Sea, the solace of our desert, the light that guides us towards heaven."
— St. John Bosco

†MEDITATION OF THE DAY
"The Spirit of God teaches us how we can live our faith with great generosity of spirit. There is a vertical dimension to our faith (praising and worshiping God), but there is also a horizontal dimension to our faith in which we show our love to our sisters and brothers, God's beloved children."
— Rev. Jude Winkler, p. 8

⛪ TODAY'S FEAST DAY

DEDICATION OF ST. JOHN LATERAN BASILICA
November 9th is the feast of the Dedication of the Basilica of St. John Lateran in Rome. It marks the dedication, in 324 A.D., of the cathedral church of Rome after Constantine's Edict of Milan granted religious freedom to Christians. It is the oldest and ranks first among the four Papal Basilicas, and is the official ecclesiastical chair of the Bishop of Rome, the Pope. A Latin inscription in the church reads: "Omnium urbis et orbis ecclesiarum mater et caput," translated, "Of all the churches in the city and the world, the mother and head." Its universal celebration is a sign of love for and union with the See of St. Peter, Vicar of Christ.

† VERSE OF THE DAY
"You need endurance to do the will of God and receive what he has promised. 'For, after just a brief moment, he who is to come shall come; he shall not delay. But my just one shall live by faith, and if he draws back I take no pleasure in him.' We are not among those who draw back and perish, but among those who have faith and will possess life."
Hebrews 10:36-39

ST. BENIGNUS

St. Benignus of Armagh (d. 467 A.D.) was the son of a pagan Irish chieftain in what is now County Meath in Ireland. He was baptized by St. Patrick and became his loyal follower in the saint's ministry across Ireland. In 450 A.D. Benignus became coadjutor with St. Patrick in the Diocese of Armagh, and also became the first rector of the Catholic school there. St. Benignus was a talented singer and worked to form choral groups wherever they traveled for their missionary work; for this he was called "Patrick's Psalmist." He also assisted with the compilation of the Senchus Mor, the Irish Code of Law, and sat on a number of commissions, councils, and synods that helped further establish the Catholic faith across Ireland. His feast day is November 9th.

Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome

Lectionary: 671
Reading 1

EZ 47:1-2, 8-9, 12

The angel brought me
back to the entrance of the temple,
and I saw water flowing out
from beneath the threshold of the temple toward the east,
for the façade of the temple was toward the east;
the water flowed down from the southern side of the temple,
south of the altar.
He led me outside by the north gate,
and around to the outer gate facing the east,
where I saw water trickling from the southern side.
He said to me,
"This water flows into the eastern district down upon the Arabah,
and empties into the sea, the salt waters, which it makes fresh.
Wherever the river flows,
every sort of living creature that can multiply shall live,
and there shall be abundant fish,
for wherever this water comes the sea shall be made fresh.
Along both banks of the river, fruit trees of every kind shall grow;
their leaves shall not fade, nor their fruit fail.
Every month they shall bear fresh fruit,
for they shall be watered by the flow from the sanctuary.
Their fruit shall serve for food, and their leaves for medicine."

Responsorial Psalm

PS 46:2-3, 5-6, 8-9

R. (5) The waters of the river gladden the city of God, the holy dwelling of the Most High!
God is our refuge and our strength,
an ever-present help in distress.
Therefore, we fear not, though the earth be shaken
and mountains plunge into the depths of the sea.
R. The waters of the river gladden the city of God, the holy dwelling of the Most High!
There is a stream whose runlets gladden the city of God,
the holy dwelling of the Most High.
God is in its midst; it shall not be disturbed;
God will help it at the break of dawn.
R. The waters of the river gladden the city of God, the holy dwelling of the Most High!
The LORD of hosts is with us;
our stronghold is the God of Jacob.
Come! behold the deeds of the LORD,
the astounding things he has wrought on earth.
R. The waters of the river gladden the city of God, the holy dwelling of the Most High!

Reading II

1 COR 3:9C-11, 16-17

Brothers and sisters:
You are God's building.
According to the grace of God given to me,
like a wise master builder I laid a foundation,
and another is building upon it.
But each one must be careful how he builds upon it,
for no one can lay a foundation other than the one that is there,
namely, Jesus Christ.

Do you not know that you are the temple of God,
and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?
If anyone destroys God's temple,
God will destroy that person;
for the temple of God, which you are, is holy.

Alleluia

2 CHR 7:16

R. Alleluia, alleluia.
I have chosen and consecrated this house, says the Lord,
that my name may be there forever.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel

JN 2:13-22

Since the Passover of the Jews was near,
Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
He found in the temple area those who sold oxen, sheep, and doves,
as well as the money-changers seated there.
He made a whip out of cords
and drove them all out of the temple area, with the sheep and oxen,
and spilled the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables,
and to those who sold doves he said,
"Take these out of here, and stop making my Father's house a marketplace."
His disciples recalled the words of Scripture,
Zeal for your house will consume me.
At this the Jews answered and said to him,
"What sign can you show us for doing this?"
Jesus answered and said to them,
"Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up."
The Jews said,
"This temple has been under construction for forty-six years,
and you will raise it up in three days?"
But he was speaking about the temple of his Body.
Therefore, when he was raised from the dead,
his disciples remembered that he had said this,
and they came to believe the Scripture
and the word Jesus had spoken.

Daily Meditation: 1 Corinthians 3:9-11, 16-17

You are God's building. (1 Corinthians 3:9)

As the doors of this church were first thrown open in the year AD 313, it's easy to imagine the contagious joy the Christians there felt. After nearly three hundred years of celebrating Mass in secret and hiding their faith for fear of persecution, believers could now come into the light: the emperor Constantine had made Christianity legal! Not only that, but Constantine gave them their first official church: a place where they could gather in full view of the public.

Ever since then, this church, the Church of St. John on the Lateran Hill in Rome, has been the central church of Catholicism. It remains the official seat of the bishop of Rome, the pope, and therefore holds a special place of honor, even above St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican!

It's amazing to consider all of the Masses and celebrations that have occurred for nearly two millennia on the site of this church. Yet we should also consider what has come out of this church.

The word "Mass" itself is translated from the Latin word missa, which means "dismissal." That's why our Mass ends in a commissioning that urges us to "go in peace to love and serve the Lord."

That's exactly what has happened at the Lateran Basilica for all these centuries. God's people have come through its doors to strengthen their faith, and then they have gone out ready to bring the good news of Christ to the world. Entering this church, they become more fully the Church—the body of Christ—that Jesus wants them to be, and they bring his light to everyone else.

Just think, if it weren't for this "mother and head of all churches in the world," you might not even have a church to go to. So it's only right to honor the day of its dedication. Remember that the next time you walk through the doors of your church. You are going there to be fed. You are going there to receive Jesus into your own body and soul. All so that you can then go out and witness to his glory and his love.

"Jesus, strengthen me so that I can fulfill my own mission to love and serve you in this world."

If one lie is allowed into the Church's sacred teachings, it's like putting one crack in a windowpane. If one falsehood is declared and is defined as truth, the gates of Hades will have prevailed. But Christ has given us an unconditional guarantee that they will not prevail, because He built His Church upon Peter and his successors—the Rock.

"... the façade of the temple was toward the east;
the water flowed down from the southern side of the temple, south of the altar."
At the parish I go to, the church faces east. The large crucifix behind the altar then, representing our Lord, the blood piercing his side flows as if with water, to the south just like in Scripture.

This is important to notice...the body of Christ.

psalms

We pray: "The LORD of hosts is with us;
our stronghold is the God of Jacob.
Come! behold the deeds of the LORD,
the astounding things he has wrought on earth. The waters of the river gladden the city of God, the holy dwelling of the Most High!"
Waters gladden the city. Running waters make for holy waters.

You must be running. Not parked. Stagnant waters do not make things holy. And I'm speaking about your spiritual life of course, where the waters of Christ must course through you.

2cents2

We heard today the Word of God:
"Do you not know that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?"
We cannot fathom how this works, that we should consider ourselves a housing. We cannot understand this, but just because you don't understand, it does not mean it is not true. How He dwells in us we don't know. But the fact that He dwells in us, or at least desires to do so, makes for a significant impact on our lives...at the core.

And so our Lord comes into the temple: "Take these out of here, and stop making my Father's house a marketplace."
Get the animals out of here!
Get your trading deals out of here!
You've lost the meaning of true worship, and adoration!
You've lost the purpose of the temple!

Wouldn't it be nice if our Lord would come into your temple and whip everything out, that didn't belong there?

But the message is beyond our feeble thinking.
Jesus did this to His temple.
You must do so in your temple.
Drive out the animals. Drive out your ideals. And restore worship and adoration in a clean and pure place....of your heart, for Him.
And our Lord issues a command: ""Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up."
But they didn't. They didn't believe. "Who are you to tell me what to do!" is the attitude. "Just who do you think you are!".
And because they didn't destroy it, He did it Himself.
At the crucifixion, new waters flowed. The temple veil tore in two. The locked tabernacle would now explode into the world.
Every race and nation would now know what God has done.
He let His heart be torn and and HIS body ripped open as the ultimate love offering for the world to see from the inside out.

This is a message for you to do. Running waters are working waters. Running waters are holy waters. Will you let yourself be shredded open too? Will you let your blood and water flow? For God our Father? For His holy will? Nevermind your feelings my friend. Feelings are bound to temporal affairs. Nevermind your ego, that should've gone long ago when you said yes to the Lord. Now it is about His will. When you let the world see Christ, they will see hope, and when they see hope, they will see love. And this is the light.

Lord, thank you for the Holy Temple You gave us.
